I just wanna say that you are truly an aspiring person, and certainly one of the heroes of mine. All the joy you had and have on the way getting to your goal was always something that I was looking up to and probably made me a better person myself. @@resistantmarine2890 Good point. My understanding from Tony Platt, the engineer for BiB, Let There Be Rock (1979 Movie Soundtrack), Flick of the Switch, etc. is that Angus used a few amp/cab combos for those sessions and most other recordings. Maybe it's the ambience in that room or the amp settings, but it just sounds too...IDK, overdriven, choppy, muddy or something else with the tower. Angus and Mal....what a great guitar duo! Awesome job @solodallas , I’m more into Mal’s stuff but I have a problem: I play a 75’ Super Bass pretty much Stock through a 1960 BX Cab loaded with G25s. For guitar I use a Gretsch G5655 Center Block Double Cut with a stock Filter’Tron. But the thing is that I don’t really get THAT tone (oriented at the 2001-2003 live sessions). Until I get to Volume 4-5 the amp has a really high gain for a Super Bass. It isn’t clean at all anymore. Also I don’t have that typical ‘brightness’ if you know what I mean. So what do you think could the issue (s) be ?? I’d really appreciate your helping :)

    • @SoloDallas
      @SoloDallas  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Tom sorry only seen this now. You seem to have all the right things but the speakers; I think Mal was NOT using greenbacks anymore in 2001 (earlier than that in fact) as he was using massively V30s (vintage 30s). The V30s are a way tougher speaker, with very little of vintage in fact; they are a product of the 1990s if I remember well. They are a 'mid-scooped' speaker which will really take you where you want to be; you will be shocked. They do not saturate as easily as the lighter greenbacks and as a consequence of them being intentionally mid-scooped, they offer brightness in spades. THIS will help you. Fil

      @SoloDallas  Před 4 lety +1

      I understand fully. Like, beyond fully; but I need you to know: it wasn't Angus' fault, or Sony's fault or Consequence of Sound's fault - and it wasn't certainly mine either. I am just 'providing' the rig to the companies-assembly that have created the contest; and I WILL ship out from my storage to the winner. Directly - but I don't get to decide (I didn't get to decide) anything else about the contest. When I asked WHY it had been restricted to North America only (US/Canada) I was fully explained that they had tried initially; but (listen carefully) the stupid amount of rules, laws and regulations PER country about international contests had made it *impossible* for them to deal with it all; they couldn't arrange it because intra-country it was too complex. That's the truth, that's the reality: as I always say, I would have loved to be able to put the finger on someone for failing us not letting us reach the whole world and yet I had to accept that it's really no-one's fault other than, the complexity of today's world.

    Personally I've really been enjoying the 1979 live in Paris sound. I believe for that particular show they were using Marshall Master Volumes, and Angus was using a chord. I like back in black, and it's a great rock n roll tone, but personally, it's that live sound that I like. All their guitar tones are amazing, from High Voltage, to Let there be rock, to Powerage, to Back in Black to Flick of the Switch, it's all great, but on a person level, the Let there be rock sound and that live in Paris sound is what I wish to have. I have a Marshall Vintage Modern, with a Marshall 1960 super lead cabinet with greenback speakers, so really I've kind of got the sound, I'm just not allowed to turn in up in the house 😂

    • @SoloDallas
      @SoloDallas  Před 4 lety

      Great to be in touch with you. I am actually happy now I can take the chance and straighten a couple more 'facts'. I just want you to know what was used and when; you did mention Let There Be Rock" The Movie, and well - it was recorded with the same gear that had been used on the album "Highway To Hell", since the movie was 'just' one recorded performance (two, actually) in Paris during the Highway tour. First thing we have to keep in mind is, AC/DC's tradition (part of their process, 'the recipe', if you will) to use *the same* gear on the tour subsequent to a particular album that had just been released, in order to have a little tone-reminiscence from the album itself; this has been proved to be correct over the decades. Hence, the Highway Tour (as I was able to actually document) used as a *main* amplifier for Angus Young, a JTM50. Surprised? You shouldn't be. And it's documented (write me at sd@solodallas.com, will show you evidence). The JTM50 was sort of used as a master amplifier with other 'slave' amplifiers used to further amplify the sound for more wattage. The 'document' in my possession (from the French sound engineer that worked on the Paris show and hence, the movie itself) speaks of just one amplifier backstage, 50W amp with a great 'grain of sound' (which was then the same amplifier that would be used later on on Back in Black - a Marshall JTM50). There you go, we're all blown away with such profound misunderstanding and misconception that we have *all* been fooled into myself for first, for years) until I was able to uncover the truth. Also, the speaker types used on both Highway To Hell and Back in Black (albums and tours) were not at all "greenbacks", but the more rare Celestion G12-65s. In fact, if you check my recent videos, you will see (hear) that my tone matching techniques (using exactly the gear aforementioned) will resonate with you - I am certain of this. This being said... have fun with whatever you play with! Yours truly, Fil

      @@SoloDallas From watching the movie, whether it be on CZcams or the tape that I have, what's that Marshall called that Malcolm is standing next to? The 'Marshall' logo on it is bigger than the one that is on JTM45s or the other plexi's, and it doesn't have the 4 inputs, it only has two. I have this Marshall book that talks about Marshall's very first amps, and it goes over how Marshall created those amps way back in the 60s. And the one amp that I saw in that book, I've seen Malcolm and Angus use on stage in the late 70s. The Apollo Theater show, the show in Holland, AC/DC uploaded those three videos from Plug Me In last year, a couple of concerts up on youtube, one in Cleveland, Ohio, and the other at the Coliseum in Oakland, California. The amps that I see on stage look the amp that I described above. So I always thought, that amp they were using in the 70s was the new amp Marshall had come out with. It eliminated the 4 inputs where you had to daisy chain it to get that sound, and it gave you a volume, bass, treble, mid, and a master volume. That's the amp I thought they were using.

    Solodallas needs to make this Schaffer Replica pedal in a 1590A mini enclosure. The Pedal is why to big to put on my pedal board. I would prefer if there was dial controls to control how much of the wireless compression and expander you want. I think the 70s untils had internal trim pots to dial how much wireless gain, compression and expanding circuit you wanted. Mini 1590A pedal I would get it to save space on my pedal board.

      We do. The original system back in the day cost (indexing prices to today's for inflation etc.) around 17k to 22kUSD (today's USD) somewhere in there, the original, 1970s price was around USD4500 per SVDS, including one EX63 receiver, two X10 transmitters, cables etc.

    • @SoloDallas
      @SoloDallas  Před 3 lety +2

      Kane, if we had chosen 1970s technology for the wireless (in order for it to be a real replica) it would have been a huge failure: outdated, obsolescent and even nowadays, ILLEGAL FM technology. Now, adding modern wireless technology to it ourselves would have been a huge mistake as well, since we have great, truly transparent DIGITAL wireless systems that work great. We're were ONLY in the sound of the original system - that's what we wanted to capture (and have). If you want to go winless, just go Shure and add us to the chain as you would with any other guitar pedal/effect. Thanks!

    Sorry to interrupt but this is incorrect listen to all the AC/DC albums from the very beginning with Bon Scott and listen to them on a good sound system and you’ll see how tight The band was like this gentleman is saying and listen to the sound it was always just as good as back in Black the engineering was outstanding on all the albums before back in black and they were extremely tight so this is just my opinion I’m glad Angus found his wireless system that’s great but the sound was always there Malkham knew what he was doing he was The leader Of that band And they always had THE SOUND It’s great they’re giving it a guitar away thanks for all the great years of wonderful rock ‘n’ roll music ACDC

    • @SoloDallas
      @SoloDallas  Před 4 lety

      What is incorrect? Not clear. Also, objectively, 'guitar tone' is subjective. However, even just basing ourselves on sales (of the album) we could argue that there has been a preference for Back in Black - at least for some, not including you. AC/DC *have* evolved other years, they have changed. You can like some periods over others, but they did not have had always the same sound - not their recorded versions of it - and that has been intentional, Be well,

    I love this but also would like to know more about Mals tone and gear used on the album. I hear he played White Falcon, but in any event, his sound was the foundation. Have you tried getting that tone? Would appreciate any leads to Mals sound!

    • @SoloDallas
      @SoloDallas  Před 4 lety +1

      VERY glad you asked me this. Yes, we have been working on Mal's sound as well - for quite some time. Not as long as on Angus'; but definitely for a while. If you - for example - went to some of our recent covers here on this same channel, you'd see that we try as hard as we can - even going to original equipment as much as possible. In this respect, I can tell you that we used and use, two original Marshall Superbass amplifiers from the 1970s (like Mal); a few Gretsches, of which one original Firebird from 1962 (Mal's was from 1963). A master built Gretsch Malcolm Young Signature Jet and a couple more signatures. This was definitely Mal's signature and basic setup; but not the only one. As microphones, much of the early Malcolm sounds were captured with Neumann U47FET which was the microphone of choice at Albert Studios in Sydney; Mal started using Celestion G12-65s in about 1978-1979 and used them for a long time. As a general rule, Malcolm loved 'mid scooped' speaker types, because they would help him clean up his clean-dirty sound to a more polished level. I hope this information will help you a bit!

    • @AndyNyle
      @AndyNyle Před 4 lety

      SoloDallas oh wow! That helps a lot! First off that he used a Superbass amp. That might explain his ballsy tone from just a bridge pickup? I don’t think to be able to afford all that hear but it is very inspiring to start experimenting with what I have: Fender Tele Plus into Fender Deville (jcm type pedals of course :)

    • @SoloDallas
      @SoloDallas  Před 4 lety +1

      @@AndyNyle JCM type amplifiers are way too gainy for what you're looking for. I am really talking about clean sounds, on the edge of breakup - very elusive and very desirable. The hardest sound of all. Many try and fail. Tele I think is a great substitute for a Gretsch; you may want to install heavy gauge of strings, make the action as low as you can (Mal had a very low action and 12-56 gauge strings in the last decades) and go at it. Have fun!
