#40overfashion - Jak na to + styl
As you said in the ending segment shoes make all the difference. Elevating one’s shoe game and keeping the same wardrobe will get a ton of compliments. That’s how I started my style conversion a few years back. Right away people made compliments.
Absolutely true!
I recently replaced all of my shoes and got a pair of scaled up sneakers in black with white lowers with touches of brown as well as a pair of nicer ones in similar colors and a pair of zipper engineer boots in black to round out the collection. Even with outfits I already had they just look better with a fresh pair of shoes.
This is cool to see you talk about the sandwich method, this is how I usually seem to work my outfits. Sometimes I seem to even just hint at this with my sock color.
Thank you John. Once again you knock it out of the park!!!!
My pleasure!
One of your best videos! I had to watch it twice, because i wanted to see your outfits again. Keep up the good work.
Yay! Thank you!
Yes shoes are everything.
Thanks John.
The sandwich method. Love it. That’s something I do unconsciously sometimes. It’s good to know it’s a thing! I’m also digging the monochromatic kick. Good stuff 👍
Thanks for watching!
The sandwich method sounds like a really cool option for most folks. Also, going monochromatic really elevates the style quite a bit. This was yet another great video.
Thank you very much!
Excellent information. Thank you. I see another benefit from darker tops - they set off or frame your silver hair and beard. White or light tops make them disappear and seem to give your body a strange proportion.
Great Advice. Over the last month I’ve found four great pieces of footwear from Allen Edmonds. They’re one of the few companies that makes my size. So I found a Chukka boot, a penny loafer, and three great sneakers. Right around $2000.00 total. I’ve never found decent fashionable sneakers until I ordered these. So your advice on shoes is perfect. Collars yes, I’ve also bought a bunch of new Ralph Lauren Polos because the custom slim fits me great, unlike any other polo I’ve ever found.
We disagree about Topsiders, no big deal. I found three Sperry Topsiders in my size and ordered them. They are always going to be classic, so in or out of style I don’t think about that.
For me the easiest thing to start dressing better was your advice to get better fitting clothing. Older guys like me gravitate to baggy shorts, shirts and jeans just for the comfort but with today’s blends you can wear slimmer fitting clothing that’s still very comfortable and looks so much better. I’m 6’2” so I’m not sure if people really notice my shoes unless they’re really bad.
What a clever idea the sandwich method is! In addition I appreciate and use all your style tricks. Thanks John for your keen, discriminating eye. You are a class act.
Appreciate you! Thanks for watching!
tucked in white shirt with the white sneakers looks off, super matchy-matchy
That's a very interesting concept.
Really cool concept. Thanks for bringing it to us John.
You bet! My pleasure!
So ok, on second watching I noticed the Tom Ford Books, the You Tube award, (Great job by the way) the great background in general, and the Good Fellas photo. I love it all!
Yes! Thank you! Good eye!
Great Combinations! Looks Good.
Thank you!
I'm glad you take the time to model what you're talking about. The visuals really do help. Sort of reenforces my thoughts on when I shop for clothes. I used to look at a shirt or pants on the rack and think I wouldn't like it on me (because of a pattern or cut or whatever). Then once I didn't think I would like, then I really liked it. So it makes sense to model them for yourself. So I appreciate the effort you made to show us what you're talking about. Can you do underwear and swimwear next? 😉
Thank you-well done
My gosh, those color combinations & styles on you look so wonderful, I'm learning more and more about dressing a bit more suave, but living in the caribbean, I do more flip flops, sandals and shorts than anything else, except for work and nicer occasions in air-conditioned environments mostly. 😊
So many great looks in this one video - thank you for sharing!
You are welcome!
This is very cool John!!! I have not heard of this, yet makes total sense! Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
especially the sandwich method was really interesting and helpful - thanks!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Great looks John. Those are some easy to remember tips.
Thank you!
Good tips! Great outfits all look 💯 on you..
Thanks for your content, always pick up a great tip or two from watching your Chanel. 🥂
I appreciate that!
Great advice as usual. I've been upping my shoe game, and even included a pair of brown Olukai's for casual days with jeans & shorts. My latest find is the driving loafer in cognac. Great with slacks and a sport coat, or jeans. Great multi purpose shoes.
Great tips across the board, well put together. I have been incorporating contrast for years. I began using it due to living with red-green color weakness that makes it hard to differentiate between certain colors. I know what I have and I know what work together, but when the value of the tones are similar, to me, they blend in and to me that looks bland. This is especially true with light shades like pastels. I also mix warm and cool tones to add contrast at times.
Well John, my favorite fashion influencer, you have gone and done it again. I'm all for the sandwich method. I've been doing it for many many years. I love the jeans between the white shirt and white sneakers. Perfect for spring. I also like the light Chino pants between the brown Shirt and brown shoes. I'm going to keep on with the sandwich method. Take care, Brother 🤜🏾🤛🏻😄😀😊
Fantastic! Thanks for commenting!
Great video
Thank you!
Love this video
Thanks Gregg!
It's nicely done on all of the examples in this video that you have shown.
Appreciate that! Thanks for watching
The first shoes I bought when starting-over was a pair of medium-brown brogues. They go with everything except shorts and funeral-wear!
Great choice!
Brilliant.
This works
Thanks for watching!
I found the sandwich look abit back when I fell out with white shirts but pairing them with my white converse either with jeans or shorts works a treat. Have to admit I never thought about other colour combo sandwich looks. Great video by the way and take care my friend.
Thanks for the advice and info, I’m listening and have to say your right. My wife thanks you. I’m trying more to look as I care.
Excellent!
Spot on mate 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
White shirts or pants for casual wear means doing more laundry. However, I like the concepts.
Never cared for the "bare neck" look, which is why I believe that t-shirts, a henley, or crewneck sweaters shouldn't be worn alone.
Even in hot weather, I prefer a solid color polo, typically white, light blue, light green, etc. As for the collars, I can wear a less expensive shirt and make it look good by simply ironing it, using a little spray starch on the collar. (Iron the underside of the collar to avoid any discoloration.)
Shoes?...always clean, with a little shine. Women notice, and this provides a momentary distraction from my "retired" gut. 😉✌❤ Thank you John!
Even though I have a lot of t-shirts, I much prefer to wear button down shirts the largest majority of the time. This 63 YO is working on getting my physic back. I will be the first to admit that my style needs improved. Lately I have found myself wearing sneakers all the time, including wearing black sneakers to places like church and the office. Two reasons I wear sneakers to the office... 1) they are comfortable, and 2) I like to take brisk walks around through the office building between meetings to get my exercise. I know... I need to do better.
You offer simple, practical, easy to understand tips and ideas that any guy can apply to their own style and wardrobe. You're right about the shoes - a very easy way to elevate the look of any outfit and one's overall look. And keep them clean and polished and match the belt with the shoes (this annoys me to see men with mismatched shoes and belts - or no belt). I think this is true with accessories in general - higher quality shoes, belts, hats, ties, scarves, gloves and watches can really polish your look and freshen your style. Great channel with great info - thank you!
I appreciate that!
I recently purchased the Collars and Co polos and I absolutely love them, both long sleeve and short sleeves. Trust me, it's worth it! Thanks for the recommendation.
Totally agree! Thanks for watching!
So I have watched allot of mens style videos and not one of them have visually explained how to dress in this precise system method. Complements to you!!
Awesome! Thank you very much!
That was a top content video, thank you.
And you are right, as a skinny-AF dude I've naturally avoided t-shirts but opted for a few polos.
Good stuff! Thanks for commenting!
Thank u once again
5:43 is a favourite
Used the sandwich method today and worked well: maroon shirt, maroon belt, blue jeans, and maroon Allen Edmond loafers. Thanks for the tip!
Nice work!
Cold hard truth bombs!
Great content as always John, btw love the outfit at 4:00, the suede jacket 👌
Appreciate it!
Hi Sir, thanks , easy tips to improve our look. Best wishes
Thank you!
great video. thank you
Thanks for watching!
loving your videos, just stumbled on them yesterday and subscribed. @@40OverFashion
Style for me is a Passion
Remember the importance of using shoe trees in those shoes! No matter how much you polish them, if they are creased and out of shape they just won’t look good!
Another great video - the point about tee shirts and their unstructured nature was great advice! In my mind: me = body of The Rock; reality: me = body of cookie monster!
Haha!
What is a good rule in regards to tucking or not tucking a short sleeve polo?
Thank you so much , You have shared valuable insight .. You earned a subscriber.. Also please make a video on shoes .. What type of shoes to wear with what type of clothing ,Jeans & chinos and Trousers and Jackets and Blazers i am bad at it !!
Noted! Thank you for watching!
@@40OverFashion Thank you will wait for your video on shoes
Thanks a lot, John. This is so much helpful.🫶
Solid advice, as usual! Thanks, John. That cardigan with the dress shirt looked amazing. Gotta get that for myself.
Thank you!
This is more 50 and over fashion
Maybe do a show about colour matching clothes to your complexion? I noticed that you look way better with blue shirt than brown (no offence intended). My own skin tone looks best with blues, greys, taupe, and bad with yellow (also green as a derivative of yellow) and browns.
Yeah, I’ve made a few videos where I have touched on skin tone, but maybe I talk about it some more. Thanks for the suggestion!
Hi John, which jeans are you wearing?
Hi ,great videos enjoy the content ,question what hair product do you use . I like the way it looks natural, I need something like that
My go-to product right now is the Layrite cement clay.
@@40OverFashion Thanks alot I'm ganna try it, take care and keep the great content coming 👍
Looking good in those combinations!! Just an issue I had. I have different pairs of shoes & sneakers. Problem was when getting my pants hemmed, I wore one pair of shoes but then I changed up by wearing another pair and the length was off. Not by much. What do you usually do? Hem your pants to specific shoes or if you know you will wear chinos with sneakers, you hem to the sneakers you will wear or just say screw it-the hem is slightly off? Love to hear. Maybe discuss in a video!! Thanks again for your advice!
Yeah, I generally have them hemmed for a specific shoe, but if it’s a little bit off, it’s generally not a problem.
😊❤🎉💯🙏.
Are you wearing the Montana Button Down Cotton Piqué Long Sleeve Navy? Love that shirt on you and I want to buy it also!
Yes, it’s great!
I've really elevated my shoe game thanks to you! Now I'm needing a suit for an interview. Nothing extremely formal. And of course I'll have it tailored. Any suggestions on where online to get a comfortable, flexible suit? TY
I love Suit Supply. Go check them out.
So today I wore a black shirt, beige pants, brown belt/shoes and socks. Looked pretty good.
But using the sandwich method I thought it would look better with black shoes and a black belt but was stuck on what colour for the socks (s/b colour of pants but black shoes and brown pants?). Is this one of those situations where I buy a dress boot and wear plaid lol socks)
I like that blue shirt you’re wearing and the blue long sleeve with dual pockets. What are they?
The blue, dual chest pocket shirt is from Weston Bouchér.
Where do you get your pants?
Hi I love this video. But one question, what brand of chinos are you wearing in this video?
Banana republic, express, and Perk
Thanks@@40OverFashion
I'm liking your channel.
I have an athletic build.
But I've used that as an excuse to mainly wear t shirts. I'm wanting to expand my options.. Your tips are very helpful.
Thank you!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Always wanted to try loafers but lacked the confidence to wear them because they are kind of known as "poser" shoes, at least in my area. Maybe you could do a video on overcoming the mentality where you dress yourself down to blend in with the group?
Interesting. I’ve never heard of loafers being associated that way.
@@40OverFashionYeah it's a shame because they are nice looking shoes. I think a lot of people get their perceptions from what they see on TV, and in the UK Loafers are only really seen being worn by the arrogant young guys from reality shows like Love Island and TOWIE. It's probably a jealousy thing, but Brits tend to love moaning about things haha.
Shoes make a huge difference in your outfit. Good shoes or bad, it’s the one piece of item that makes you stand out from the crowd.
In hot weather, sometimes you just can’t get away from a t-shirt. Anything with a collar traps heat and you’ll become sweaty and quite uncomfortable.
Hey John, I hope you're doing well my friend! So, I've been doing the contrasting top & bottom thing forever (sometimes a sandwich, sometimes a more uh, "half sandwich"?). I've always thought that worked well for me, but I recently heard one of the other style CZcamsrs say that the top to bottom contrast makes a guy look a little shorter because it sort of cuts him in half visually. I'm 5'7"... I'm not big on the idea of looking much shorter that that! What are your thoughts?
Yeah, I suppose I get that, so my response would be to go with a soft contrast, or something monochrome. Also remember, you are who you are, and you can’t change your height. People can tell how tall you are, or how short you are, so if you like wearing a bold contrast, then go for it!
How do I stop pants from falling under my belly. Real world problem
Todo bien. Buenas combinaciones pero los pantalones mallas de baile ya fueron
One of my guy friends and I like fashion. I can just imagine us going to a bar and saying to a lady, "You look good, but not on-point. My friend and I would like to introduce you to the sandwich method." SLAP!
I had to say it.
Haha!
John you went “yard” once again. I’m late 60’s and retired. But I don’t want to “look” retired if you get my drift. I think you call it “don’t dress like you are giving up on life”. I ordered a set of the Anson belts and look forward to incorporating those into my wardrobe. I think they will add a little pop vs the standard brown and black belt.
Awesome! Thanks for commenting!
Hey John. Don't have a comment. Do have a question. We know your take on T-shirts. Do you put Henley's & V-necks in the same group? You've never really mentioned them before that I can recall.
Yeah, I suppose so. Henley’s are slightly better than a regular V-neck or crewneck T-shirt though.
Thanks for the response. I kinda figured that's what you'd say. Appreciate your videos and your fashion advice.
The guy with red T-shirt 🤣
I take it that your Collars&Co discount code is only for USA, not for your international viewer & subscribers?
Very well could be, but I’m not exactly sure. That’s something they would determine. Appreciate the feedback!
If you can’t justify the collars and co shirts is there budget options?
Sure, any other polo is fine, just beware of the soft collar, that’s all.
I picked up a couple of polo shirts that have collars like a button down dress shirt at, believe it or not -- Uniqlo. They were $25 each and the fabric doesn't have a shiny look. I went to Collars & Co a while back but I didn't like the shininess of their shirts.
Ive always found that polo shirts seem to emphasize big guts.
The shoes advice is great. For most men the shoes are the last thing they think about.
I might argue that T-shirts emphasize guts way more. Appreciate the comment.
What's the shirt you're wearing?
I guess you missed that part of the video. It’s also from Collars & Co.
The sandwich method: Starting and ending your video with the information and throwing the ad in the middle. I see what you did there :)
I thought the Sandwich Method was something else. 🤔
I really hope Kanye West sees this! 😂
Ha!
Just described Europeans “Casuals” with the same colour shoes and jacket/top
YOU DO LOOK TASTY.
I've done this too forever but never put a name to it. One point I would add about it is this: doing this will draw attention to your footwear because it will always contrast with your trousers. This is why, personally, I don't use this technique much anymore. Wearing trousers and shoes in very similar tones lengthenes my leg line, which I like because I'm on the shorter side.
So it's a nice technique, but you need to know why and how to use it.
I appreciate this concept but I do think it cuts your body in half. I always add a jacket or blazer which is similar in shade to the pants so that the overall look is more vertical.
Fair enough.
I wish he recommended were he would recommend buying quality shoes.
@3:20 - "Unless you have an athletic body, a t-shirt will not look good. What I would recommend is like a short sleeve polo or button-down shirt."
(Proceeds to display a model with the body of a finely tuned athlete as an example).
LOL Come on, man.
Damned if I do, and damned if I don’t. I can’t win. Appreciate the feedback.
Don't put your thumbs in your pockets.(dorky looking)
Problem with sandwich method are your shoe color which are limited. You end up with black, brown or white most of the time. And I had to agreed with you about T shirt. If you had dad bod, is not gonna look nice at all. Now I prefered kinda like your polo or casual dress shirt. Are you a hatter too John?
Thank you! No, I’m not.
No, the white shoes do not make it look cohesive. It’s a now two year old fashion trend by men searching for business casual norms. They do not show creativity or personality.
Nice outfits for guys who don't WORK for a living! If you're a remote worker or have a nice cushy white collar overpaid desk job, then great! Otherwise, these are all overpriced overdressed outfits that will get damaged and have to be replaced OFTEN, as they're not made to take an actual work environment. Unless of course, you have SO much money and TOO much time to change clothes and wear two or three outfits a DAY! Which seems to be the "advice" you so often give seems to either imply or are only for those males who have nothing better to do and can afford to have others do the grunt work of life, while you stay in pristine outfits and styles.
When shooting selfies through a mirror, look in the mirror, not the phone…
All wrong. Basic priniples. The line is visually interrupted and makes u very short
smh did we really need this video dude out here dressing like a teen😢😢
I think the white shirt and white shoes is ridiculous for any guy over 25.
