      Yeah, I think I've heard that it detects a spike in heart rate, which normally occurs when telling a lie. Naturally, this system can be fooled as someone who can control their heart rate can easily make even the most ridiculous lie seem like the truth.

      essentially what happens is they ask you some calibrating questions, and make notes of the chart when you are answering truthfully (what is your name, age etc), and then ask you other questions and compare it Its by no means an exact science and yes if you, for example, remember an embarrassing moment in your life when they ask you a question the needle goes all over the place and it comes out as a "lie"

      If you're a naturally sweaty person with some, then you're obviously lying about everything. If you have an irregular pulse, if you're incredibly calm when lying, if you're have social anxiety or a phobia you start freaking out about, etc. All of these are potential ways a test can generate bad data. They're junk science to the core. "Experts" in "The science of polygraph tests" take a short course after completing high school. They're not real scientists. The entire industry is a con that the state is too invested in now to admit. A coinflip to determine guilt or innocence is only slightly less scientific.
