I've told my friends before that like 80% of cat ownership is trying to outsmart your cats through complicated engineering.
yup. Cat owner here. We've had to rearrange stuff and put stuff in different places so that our cat won't eat/attempt to eat them/knock them off of the surface they're on. We also got a water fountain thingy because he always pushed the water dish around to make it move to drink it, so it always got on the floor everywhere, and we tried to put it on a tray, that didn't work, so we gave in and got him a water fountain thingy to drink from.

unless you're a tiger mom who's only had dogs before (aka me). I strictly trained my cat basically like a dog and she never jumps on tables/counters, only eats what is in her bowl (even if you literally try and hand-feed her something, she will refuse), comes when called, etc. Currently in the process of training her to walk beside me when she goes on walks. She does it most of the time unless she gets distracted/startled by something. When I tell her off, she immediately stops, and either lays down (and i'll pick her up) or goes into her 'timeout' room herself and stays in there silently until timeout is over.

My cat is like that. It's amazing how she just eats 2-3 kibbles and then just goes outside for 30 minutes and then returns for 2-3 kibbles and just does this all day. Literally all day.

Poor Haku, having to overcome hurdles like this, just to get his fair share of the grub. I'm impressed with your creativity here.
To anybody asking if this might work for your cats, here’s my experience. We have 2 cats, and one of them was super skittish. It took him a long time to get used to it and we had several setbacks with him. But with persistence and patience, and 6 months, our boys use them without problems. We did have to use the included tags because their microchips migrated away from their necks and wasn’t strong enough to reliably open the feeder.
Edited a month later to add: recently one of our boys had an upset stomach and because of these bowls we were able to see exactly how much he was eating which became a surprise benefit we never had with free feeding. I love these bowls and the boys are doing well with them too!

The customer responses on Amazon indicated there was an "intruder" setting not mentioned in the manual that would cause the lid to close if an unauthorized chip was detected even if the authorized chip was still present.

I got one of these for our kitten, to keep the adult cats out of her food. She learned it quickly. Our 2 adults now have a rotation auto feeder and that keeps them happily focused on their own food. With 5 small meals a day, they are less likely to steal. The greedy cat's feeder is set to rotate 1 min before the other. I think we finally have food peace!

Veronica Dominguez I know this hit me in the feels pretty hard =\. Food was the first good memory he made with Rachel and Jun when they fed him their leftover hotdogs on their trip back from Mt Fuji (since he was assumably abandoned by his last owner?), so he is understandably obsessed with food. Not only does he know what it’s like to never know when he will find his next meal, it was the start of a happy relationship with Rachel and Jun ^^. He’s in good hands now, and in a good family, so no need to feel bad. 🤗

We got a microchip feeder for 3 cats, one an aggressive feeder. The aggressive feeder learned to camp on the other cats' feeders and wait until they started feeding. Then he'd butt them out of the way while the feeder was open and chow down.
Maybe you can try to feed them separately.
@@kellharris2491 That's what we tried -- timed feedings, but the aggressive feeder learned how to overcome the restriction. The only way out was to lock him up in another room, but the three are bonded. Eventually we did what R&J did -- restrict the entry path.

@@EvaaLvsM It did NOT work in my multiple cat household because only one cat was being targeted for timed feeding and he figured out a way around it by bullying the other two cats away from their food. The way the one I bought works is that it's activated by the microchip and stays open as long as there's a cat head in the feeder; the bully cat would shove the feeding cat's head out of the way and then the feeder would stay open for him. If you have a single cat, it should work fine, as it was designed.

Haku is a totally unnatural cat. He is CO-OPERATIVE and HELPFUL and PATIENT with his humans. (He is also gorgeous BTW) Even though I know Haku is a Maine Coon 🐈, which is a lovely natured and people-friendly variety of cat, I think Rachel and Jun must have magical powers 🪄💫 to get their cats to perform to order like this..

I had 4 of these feeders for my late cats and they certainly helped stop my greedy one from eating all the food.

It's the sad truth.
The only one acting like he is starving is one of my purebred cats who definitely never had to starve for even a second.
My formerly feral cat is now a slightly picky eater though any definitely doesn't try to steal food or eat as quickly as possible.

@@DieAlteistwiederda My former feral cat is also a picky eater though she does now have a few cheap brands she'll eat, thank goodness. Initially she would only eat this expensive brand and she still only eats store bought food so we have to make sure there is someone to feed her when we go on holidays as she won't eat anything she catches. Thankfully it's only her being fussy we have go worry about and not any of Poki's food habits

I saw this video a year ago when you originally posted it but now I finally decided to buy the feeder since my kitty is now eating a special food, and I also have 3 cats, 2 of which are chonky bois that like to gobble up their food, so the woven basket idea is so brilliant! My bf and I were thinking of getting a cardboard type of cube but the style you used is SUCH a better idea!

Johnny Mandel and Mike Altman - Suicide is Painless (Theme from M*A*S*H)
“The game of life is hard to play/I’m going to lose it anyway…”
One of the most famous TV and movie themes in history, the theme from M*A*S*H also has one very unexpected lyricist. When director Robert Altman was looking for a song for one of the movie’s characters to sing in one scene he told Songwriter Mandel that it had to be called “Suicide is Painless”, secondly, it had to be the “stupidest song ever written”.
Altman tried to write the lyrics himself, but found that it was too difficult for his 45-year-old brain to write “stupid enough”. Instead he gave the task to his 14-year-old-son, Michael, who quite to the contrary, produced some of the most profound lyrics ever to come out of a 14-year old! There Is a Light is one of their most-covered songs, with lyrics that were apparently inspired by one of Morrissey’s heroes, James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. Appealing to teenagers everywhere, the lyrics talk about teenage alienation - a need to run away, experience the first excesses and excitements of life, when you no longer feel at home in the family home.
REM - It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)

REM have written some of the most successful songs of the past few decades, and it’s in no small part thanks to Michael Stipe’s (often misheard) lyrics. Stipe seems to pride himself on writing lyrics that are a little opaque - very symbolic, with meanings hidden. It’s the End of the World is no exception, and as one of their most upbeat and popular songs, it’s crammed with lyrics that test even the biggest REM fans.
Apparently a sort of tribute to Bob Dylan’s famously over-lyrical Subterranean Homesick Blues, you’ll soon get out of breath singing along to this! What does it all mean? As with many REM lyrics, no one really knows for sure. There are many little snippets of stories, some complaining about capitalism, others, and some words included simply because they sound so great when strung together in song: “The ladder starts to clatter with fear fight down height”.
Neil Young - Old Man

Often ranked up there with Bob Dylan in terms of his profound lyric writing, Neil has a knack for tugging at those heartstrings. Never afraid to let his emotions show, that is what helps to make his words so powerful - that they are truthful, and from the heart.
Old Man was a song written for the old caretaker who looked after Neil’s Broken Arrow ranch, which he purchased in 1970 and still lives on today. It compares the life of an old man with that of a young man, and finds that they are more alike in their needs than they realize.
Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi

One of Neil’s fellow Canadian musicians, and a good friend of his from the folk scene, Joni Mitchell has written her fair share of famous lyrics. Perhaps the best know are the ones she penned for Big Yellow Taxi. Written about her concerns with pollution and the environment, Joni explains: ““I wrote ‘Big Yellow Taxi’ on my first trip to Hawaii. I took a taxi to the hotel and when I woke up the next morning, I threw back the curtains and saw these beautiful green mountains in the distance. Then, I looked down and there was a parking lot as far as the eye could see, and it broke my heart… this blight on paradise.”
The lines “you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone” apply to a whole range of circumstances besides the destruction of the earth - helping the song become a universal favourite.

I got this for one of my cats, cuz our other one is overweight and will eat all her food. It’s been a serious game changer!!! She loves it and is able to eat small amounts throughout the day without our other cat taking it. Definitely recommend!

Thanks so much for making this! I have two cats and have been thinking of getting one of these but was not sure if my cat who shouldn't eat dry food would be able to push my cat who does out of the way. You have done the thinking for me before buying this to make sure only the cat who should eat dry food will get to it. Right now I have been shutting the poor guy in the bathroom to eat his dry food.
I enjoyed watching how you had to figure out how to adjust the box to let Haku get in to eat. Rachel you are so talented with great ideas. I love cats but I am allergic to them. So watching your videos let's me watch your cats and how cute they are.

I have the same setup, box and all. Its a lifesaver. Boycat eats everything that isn't nailed to the ceiling, but girlcat won't eat unless boycat is nearby. This is the only thing that has worked so far

This is one great product! I have this and my cat loves it (not my other cats). Although I did copy what you did but instead I bought a clear box so I can see what he is doing in there and he can eat with the other cats beside him! But other than that hopefully Haku loves this! I feel sad for Poki though (hehe)
