I love "The Story of Stuff". A wonderful video series! I think it should be mandatory for every person on the planet to see this series. It's wonderful. I have thought about all this stuff since I was four years old. I was a worried little child. I was worried that we would run out of space to store all the garbage. As an adult, I am not worth anything to our government. I consume as little as possible. I despise the "throw away" mentality of the greedy. I recycle and shop at second hand stores.

FreeRangeStudios truly believe in protecting the environment, standing up for human rights and calling for social justice.
Social justice is a term, generally applied by the left, to describe a society with a greater degree of economic egalitarianism through progressive taxation, income redistribution, or even property redistribution, policies aimed toward achieving that which developmental economists refer to as equality of opportunity and equality of outcome.

I agree. Glass milk bottles were returnable whether the milk was delivered or bought from a shop and didn't come in tetra pak boxes or plastic bottles.
We always knew what to do with our rubbish and didn't produce so much of it. Waste paper, cardboard and rags were placed on the coal fire and the ashes placed on the compost heap. The rag and bone man used to visit now and then.

I really appreciate that you recognize and resolve the symbol of "Government" with an actual person. Not specifically a good person, or a bad person. Not specifically a Republican or a Democrat. Not a crook, and still not "not a crook".
I think part of the government's image problem is that too many people are so disconnected from their political system that it's hard to even recognize those who work in government as people-- who laugh, who dream; who lie, who scheme.
Assuming they're all corrupt only legitimizes the corruption. When we assume the good guy is just another bad guy, the bad guys keep winning.

She strongly expressed she believed in a government of the people, for the people and by the people which is also clearly NOT the case. She also explained they are supposed to play a supportive role, to care for us. They dont. An ideal government would be comprised of men with cajones and honor who did not bow to corporations, who told you the truth from the start or had the honor to do so now. Man created corporations, to admit they control man is insane. You are both right.

Yeah, I know, I drifted off-topic (I thank you for setting me straight)! It just drives me nuts about how people spend so much on "stuff", and then complain that they don't have money (I know, that's not what the video is about....but the overconsumption of "stuff" negatively affects everything, be it the environment or our own financial situations).

Hey, you're not the only one without a cell phone! I don't have a cell phone, and I never plan on getting one, ever. It's just another piece of crap that we don't need. Just because everyone else has it doesn't mean you need it. I'm amazed by all these people glued to their cell phones. I mean, it's just a telephone. I don't know how anyone can be happy with a cell phone stuck to their ear all the time. Where's the time for friends and family?

@BuffMBA To answer your question, it is bad that corporations are bigger than governments for one main reason. A government's job is to ensure that every citizen can exercise their rights and freedoms, while a corporation's job is to make maximum profit. If you actually believe that corporations care about anything else than making money, you are sadly mistaken. So who do you prefer being in charge?

I'm from mexico, I work 8 hours a day to earn 200 pesos (20 us dollars), no matter how hard I try I'll never be able to earn the 400 dollars per week a person earns in the U.S. doing the same things I do. It's not about traveling to see the poverty, it's about living it... it's easy to see a movie, to see poverty from the plane.

They are called "dropout factories" and there is around 2,000 of them in the nation. The other 40% of the nations dropouts would come from the remaining 77% of the schools. The source for that information was Robert Balfanz a professor for John Hopkins University.

We don't live longer because of medications, rather we live longer because we have access to a larger variety of food staple in our diet - fruits and vegetables. Only less than 50 years ago you'd never see the colours of the rainbow in your produce dept. as you do now. We are getting an assortment of vitamins like never before. More people die from medications, a year, than any other reason, toxic ingredients, OD, doctor/patient error but this is another topic...

Actually the thing about PC upgrading is a bit oversimplified. It's true, the CPU sockets always change but so do motherboards, memory chips and graphic cards. To keep up with recent operating systems one has to constantly upgrade his/her PC. But then, most people do not really need the latest operating system and software... even a PC from 5 years ago is perfectly fine to write documents/email or surf the web.

  • @hamsterama

Indeed! Cell phones have turned people rude, and even dangerous, such as jerks in SUV's yakking on their cell phones while driving. Hey, and if anyone asks you why you don't have a cell phone, I have a great idea. Just point out the cost of the bill for the service (let's say $40 per month for 12 months, so $480 per year), and say you'd rather give that money to charity to help others rather than spend it on selfish material objects, such as a cell phone. It'll make the person go quiet!

Yes, watching out for us (regulations, SS, using tax dollars to pay for roads, schools, etc...) is part of their job---but it's not their job to "take care of us", like they owe us---or we're entitled to be 'cared' for.

And whenever we try to use reason and really work on the issues, it seems like some "one"(I don't wish to be rude) comes along and yells "Racist" or "Wing nut" and clouds the real issues. As if someone doesn't want the issues dealt with. Maybe that would be the major corps and Politicians, don't you think?

Of course the government looks out for its citizens. The FDA, the CIA, the FBI, laws, military, The Constitution. It's all designed to protect the safety and freedom of the people that put that government in place.
The whole point of having the government oversee these things is that they're democratically elected and thus (in theory) can't be bought off like a privatized company could be.
