    This looks good! I've been wanting to pick up a new naval game, but I hadn't been considering WW1. I'll have to take a deeper look at this!

      Having played (so far) only South Pacific from the SWWAS series, I've been really anticipating this one so I can see how the relatively simpler WW1 era compares. Managing all the aircraft (not just carriers, but land-based) in the South Pacific game is a big job (the game is great, but it's a massive undertaking). So finding something that's mostly just big battleships going toe-to-toe is really appealing.

    Looking forward to see some game play. I do have Plan Orange and some SWWAS titles. None of which have have made my table.

      I have South Pacific & Bismarck, but have so far only played South Pacific. I also picked up The Cruel Sea because I'd like to try the Second Great War at Sea... but figure it'd be better to play the "original" Great War at Sea first.

    Nice to see some attention to the Avalanche Press naval games. I've got the SWWaS series. For solitaire suitability I'd say the tactical game is just fine but I'm interested in how you tackle operational play. Did they make a new Tactical Map? Mine have alpha designations on them, too. This looks more simplified.

      Was thinking I would make multiple paths for each fleet with a mission on one side, using a set of Fleet Markers (ex. #1-#3 ) on the operational map to track the progress for that mission. Then, when actually detecting or encountering one with the other side, draw from another set of fleet counters representing those same fleets on the fleet chart (ex. #4 - #7 and only 4 is the actual fleet ) from a cup to see if it's the correct one or a dummy. Then just leave any dummy fleets out of the cup for future draws when encountering the next. Run the other side's fleets as normal. Or just use poker cards with the fleet numbers in the same way so you don't have to keep track of Fleet 1 also being fleet 4 on the display, for example. Now that I think of it, the cards might be easier.
      Not sure how much extra enjoyment that may provide in exchange for the extra work but perhaps it will leave a little mystery on the Op map for a bit.

      Actually, I think it has changed some. At least in comparison to what I have from SWWAS (this is currently my only GWAS game until Cruiser Warfare 2e arrives). I've been intrigued by this one since I played South Pacific (a fantastic game but the solo challenges on the ops side are increased by the sheer volume of aircraft- carrier & land-based - you have to deal with in that one). I am looking forward to playing it in the near future to see how it differs.

      That's a really interesting idea. There's a solo system that someone (maybe AP itself) worked up that involves rolling a die to determine heading for each fleet (I found it on BGG). It works, after a fashion, but I like the idea of dummy fleets. Please let me know your impressions if/when you try out your system.

    Just stumbled on this publisher from pouring over my old 64 AH Midway and cant decide to go the South Pacific/Midway route or Jutland (have that AH one as well). Kinda like the miniature approach of the old Jutland as opposed to the battle map. Thanks fir the review (oh… and it’s pronounced “yute-land” not “jut-land” 😀).

      Thanks! South Pacific is a massive game (I don't have Midway yet). My take is that how much you enjoy one more than the other may boil down to how much you like the impact of airpower. The WWII games of course have a lot of naval (and land) airpower to manage, but the Great War, some, but not so much.

    Great....So on the operational map we only use fleets...How do we place them to start ?

    • @HexedAndCountered
      @HexedAndCountered  Před 6 měsíci

      Each scenario will tell you where to place your fleets, and the composition of each fleet. The same is true for the battle scenarios.

    Curious to hear your thoughts on the WWaS 2nd Edition and your ideas for solo play. I've tried Bomb Alley (SWWaS) and gave it a pass as extra hassle of dealing with air was too much for me, but I have Jutland 1st edition waiting to be played on my shelf. Is 2nd edition worth a buy?

    • @HexedAndCountered
      @HexedAndCountered  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks - I haven't played Jutland yet, so I can't say whether it would be worth a buy. One thing I do know is that the 2nd edition has fewer scenarios than the 1st. They've shaved off the stuff involving the ships from nations other than basically the British & Germans (so no Russians, Swedes, etc.).
      As for what is there, I'd suggest reading this post on BGG:
