Final Fantasy VII - One Winged Angel (VRC6 8-bit)

  • audio from this video is directly recorded from my NES with no alterations or enhancements. special thanks to coatlesscarl for supplying clean samples from FF7 and for some critiques and alterations that made this cover truly shine.
i guess you could consider this a hybrid of a 6,000 subscriber special and a special christmas upload. or not. whatever you feel like doin'. i hope you enjoy it. one of the main reasons i decided to release it now was rushjet1 being a jerk and linking me to a whole bunch of awful "8-bit" renditions of this song done in GXSCC, FL studio, and god knows what else. so i had to set youtube straight with a proper NES version (well it has VRC6 but if that's too non-NES for you you can bite me).
i originally finished this up back in September but have been adding alterations and enhancements since then. i figured i would save this one for another famicompo but since there might not be another one (or who knows when might be) that i'd go ahead and upload this now. but that's not to say that if famicompo ends up happening that i won't submit this NSF haha.
this represents about 24 hours of work over the course of several weeks. the FTM is 230kb (which is pretty big for one song) and contains 102kb of sample space usage spread over 40 different samples. the choir was a major bitch to get to sound decent, but with careful volume balancing and a lot of tedious work i think it turned out ok.
as always, please let me know what you thought in the comments.

Immediately what comes to mind is a little 8-Bit song composed by Matt Creamer/Norrin Radd, called ‘A Barrage of Hostile Abstractions,’ which, like what you did with the choir in this rendition of ‘One Winged Angel,’ does have vocals, and also took an absurd amount of risks by doing so.
What I’m trying to say is, this sounds absolutely phenomenal, even speaking as someone who isn’t a fan of Final Fantasy, but really loves how the song sounds.
Seriously, incorporating the choir must’ve been an absolute nightmare.
I have nothing but great things to say about this.

this is all running on my NES. it requires a cartridge that can emulate or use the VRC6 expansion chip (in this case the Powerpak), and a small modification to enable expansion channel sounds to be heard (running a resistor between two pins on the expansion port). this can play natively on a famicom if you use any VRC6 cart (Akumajou Densetsu, Esper Dream 2) to play music. try downloading the NSF in the description and opening it in an emulator, it should play the same way.
