  • I recently acquired a corn snake that needed re-homing, so today i decided to buy a starter kit to upgrade him from the temporary enclosure he was given to me in. I also ended up coming home with a pac man frog too, so that’s great.

    Honestly, if you buy a thermostat, some aspen, and one more hide, the starter kits aren't actually too bad. It would be cool to see some extra enrichment thrown in there like sticks or cork bark or something.

    • @ThatsSoReptii

      My queen snake doesn't climb on anything so I'm not adding any high up branches. He likes to burrow that's what he likes to do most of the time. He does have some rock features in there that are higher up but he doesn't bother them

  • @jmdenison
    @jmdenison Před rokem

    I picked up my cage on Facebook marketplace and I don't think I paid more than $50 for the entire setup and I got the double light fixture and a nice size cage about 2 ft by 40 in, a heat mat that came with a thermostat. Once you buy all that stuff you're pretty well set up that's the most expensive part of keeping a snake. And my corn snake does love to burrow so I put in 4 in of snake Aspen bedding. He seems to really like it. I have two hides a warm hide and a cool hide they were open on both ends so I closed off one and with some meat trays cut out to size and a hot glue gun and he did push out one end it's kind of cute but I think he likes the completely enclosed hide except for one entrance. Another important thing that you need is a digital thermometer that keeps track of your daily high and daily low and of course the humidity in the cage they recommend corn snakes be kept at 40% to 60% relative humidity

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 Před rokem

      Keep in mind that heat mats aren’t a good primary heat source, overhead heating is much better for them. Corns benefit from 65-75% humidity, they’re native to humid regions such as Florida. I’d also upgrade to a 4x2x2’ enclosure or larger, the enclosure should be at least as long as the snake and 40” typically isn’t long enough for an adult corn.

    • @nightinggale6470
      @nightinggale6470 Před 2 lety

      Just letting you know: heat mats are not a good heat source. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than heat mats. Whereas heat mats only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.

  • @jmdenison
    @jmdenison Před rokem +1

    You know you can take a clear piece of plastic and put it in the sticky side of your heat mat and that way you can move it around there should be any reason why it should move anyway. Not sure why they put sticky on it but I would just put some clear plastic sheeting over that and not use the adhesive for the reasons that you just noted

      this is equivalent to a 20 gallon, which is the bare minimum for 1 adult corn snake. Would it be a good size for its whole life? In my opinion its good for juvenile to subadult, but youll want around a 40 gallon enclosure for an adult (Exo Terra 36x18x12)

    1. Can you put the heat pad under some newspaper in the enclosure as we will need to get a bigger tank in 9 months or so?
    2. Where do you put the thermostat probe?
    Thanks

    • @ThatsSoReptii
      @ThatsSoReptii  Před 3 lety

      Heat pad should always go on the under OUTSIDE part of the tank, that way there is a layer of glass/plastic separating it so your reptile doesnt get in direct contact with the pad. As for the bigger enclosure, youll really only need to change the tank once. Baby enclosure, as youve said around 9 months, and then the adult enclosure.
      The thermostat probe is what enters the tank. Place the probe ideally in the area your snake will be, above the heat pad ofcourse.
      For example; heat pad on underside of enclosure, not inside however
      Layer of substrate (newspaper, aspen, paper towel etc)
      Thermostat probe ABOVE heating pad area
      And finally, place a hide over the heat pad zone, covering the probe as well.
      Hope i explained well, let me know if you have any more questions!

During COVID for some reason a lot of me manufacturers started to spray harsh chemicals on everything and while it didn't work they may be some of those products left around so make sure that you rinse everything thoroughly with warm water. Try to use avoid the use of chemicals other than vinegar and water actually chlorine bleach isn't even good to use in an animal tank
