Ser and Estar in the Past! Dominate "was" in Spanish | Era Fue Estaba Estuvo

Ser and estar can be confusing to many Spanish students because they both mean "to be". But with 2 past tenses in Spanish, they can get even tricker. Do you use ser or estar? Do you use the preterite or the imperfect tense? Sometimes, you can use either! Think of what you want to express. Remember, ser is permanant states or characteristics and estar is for temporary states, feelings and location. Ser in the imperfect is used to describe people and objects whereas ser in the preterite is used to describe events. Estar in the imperfect is used to talk about emotions, locations, or actions without a specific time frame or when an action is interrupted whereas estar in the preterite expresses a completed action in a specific time frame or a final decision about how we felt about something.

Please slow down and leave the sentences on the screen while you are explaining them. Then pause so we can look at the sentence and process what you have said. Also keep in mind that most people don’t know what the grammar classifications of these verbs mean. I’m glad you explain all this cause it’s one of the hardest parts of Spanish just can’t keep up with the pace.

I really enjoyed this video, and I plan to refer other people to it. I would suggest that you give more examples like the last one----describe the differences between fue, era, estuvo, and estaba in a few other situations. This would really bring home the concept.

I just use estaba for everything. They understand me well enough to do what I need done.
That can work! It just depends on what you want. If you want to be understood, you only need a few tricks like that. About 70% of the time, you'll use the imperfect.
My trick for 90% effectiveness is this: if it was an action (he closed the door, she arrived late, they took the test), use the preterite. Otherwise, use the imperfect. 🙌👍

This lesson ESTÁ fantastic!! in Global Spanish we also use lists of verbs and phrases but using them in the appropriate context. For example, talking about holidays and using different tenses.

This is the hardest part of learning Spanish for me. It made me give up last time. I’m really trying this time.
You can do it! The problem is that sometimes the difference is so subtle even native speakers don't know which to use or why. Keep at it, we're going to make another video on this very soon but specifically on the parts when all 4 work and why. 👍🙌

I (Jeff) answer all the comments here and to answer your question I've been studying Spanish on and off since high school but about 4 months before meeting Darcy, I decided I was really going to get fluent. So, when we met, I had a great grasp of vocab but spoke terribly 😅😅😅
I'm not a Spanish teacher with a degree, haha, I just try to "teach" the lessons and things I never understood when trying to learn Spanish from books on my own to other students that maybe have the same confusion.
I was a software engineer in the US and Darcy was an actress in Mexico. Now we have this channel and just started a travel channel in Spanish called @senoresmochileros 😀 👍🙌

Yo diría “El video fue superbueno”. Me estoy refiriendo a un periodo determinado durante el cual vi el video, y estoy dando mi juicio final sobre el video. La fiesta fue divertida, la clase fue interesante, el video fue superbueno.
@@eliasshakkour2904 Tienes razón que puedes usar "fue" aquí. La verdad es que se puede usar "era" o "fue" pero cambia un poco el significado. Usar "era" siginificaría más una descripción mientras (como dices) "fue" es tu juicio final sobre el video.

So if I just finished eating at a restaurant and the food was good, in Spanish the right response would be "La comida estaba muy rico"? Is this correct?
Estaba would be correct if some time after the meal you were talking with someone about the food being good.
But in your example where you just finished eating at this one specific time and are making kind of a final decision that the food tasted good, you would use estuvo.
"La comida estuvo muy rica"

I find this subject much more difficult to master than the subjunctive. You guys explained it very well. By the way, I'm at a C1 level and I still have trouble with this. With subjunctive, I feel at an almost native level - es pan comido.

I thought of a video I would like to see. I use the word “get” a lot in English but it doesn’t exist in Spanish. How can you get around this?
That's a great video idea, thank you! To answer you quickly here, there are MANY ways to express get in Spanish, but the most common for using it as a direct translation of "get" in English would be conseguir and obtener. They're synonyms so you'll have to get used to how natives use them contextually to know which is more common but to start with, they're interchangeable.
¿Cómo puedo conseguir un trabajo en esta empresa? (How can I get a job in this company?)
Necesitas obtener permiso antes de entrar el museo. (You need to get permission before entering the museum. )

Creo que para el nivel intermedio es mejor hablar como máximo sólo un 5% de inglés. O incluso para un principiante que sepa utilizar subtítulos. Normalmente, si escucho inglés, no lo miro.

I'm sorry but this hasn't cleared anything up for me. Still as confusing as every other past tense of was video I've watched. This is one concept I just can't grasp.
It is very difficult so don't feel frustrated. I'm serious when I say that this is hard for native speakers! But instead of getting upset and just saying you can't grasp this concept, let's work through it. Tell us specifically what it is you don't understand, or give me an example of these 4 expressions and what you THINK they mean....you might subconsciously understand and be correct in most cases. Let's try it out!

Sorry, but you take 3 minutes to explain the introduction and then when you get to the examples, you race through them, so quickly!! Like 3 examples in ten seconds. I find this just annoying tbh

I dont find "use word with other word" rules useful. I want to actually *understand* what's going on. How I could express bizarre counterfactuals in English with compound tenses...I could say that I'm going to time-travel to the past at some point in the future and, then, after that, looking back, I can talk about the difference between the two versions of the past..... I could say "I will used to have been". I can say this in English and know what I mean, and I'm not following a heuristic; I understand the meaning deeply, natively, and can parse this. In other languages, it needs to be the same. It's unsatisfactory to rely on heuristics as training wheels and never actually internalize the meaning as natives understand it

I believe the use one word with another works for more people than not. It's similar to the fake it until you make it system. Using one word with the other will eventually become more natural, and as you continue learning and immerse yourself in the subject, that deeper understanding will eventually come (for most of us). That's what has happened for me at every level of this journey...that sudden realization in conversation that I've been using a wrong phrase or word only to reach a much deeper understanding of it through conversation with my native Spanish speaking co-workers. I've had so many "a ha" moments over the past year it's unbelievable. I've literally thought up deeper and more complex statements, asked my coworkers, and told I was correct. A year ago I could hardly string together three words to form a thought or verbal statement, and then I decided to "get serious". 12 months later I'm intermediate, can carry on a limited basic conversation and understand about 70% of what's being said (up from about 20% a year ago), and I am only going to get better and develop a deeper understanding if I continue. I had to watch this particular video three times. The fourth time it actually clicked which just means I'll need to watch it a fifth time before work tomorrow and then practice with my coworkers to perfect my usage. Through that method alone my understanding always deepens. Experiencing how they use and understand a word or phrase versus what I interpreted from a textbook or online practice video. You sound like an academic type so I know you understand how that works more than anyone. You would eventually be able to say you will used to have been whatever, whenever, or however, and it's going to happen naturally and organically if you actually continue studying. Just saying.

I agree with you. Without actually explaining what's going on, they are just saying the examples. This is no better than any other explanation video. If they used real explanations using English examples and then repeating the example in English it would actually make sense. Giving 20 examples without context means zero. I'm glad they know which ones to use but I still have no clue and I'm almost A2.
You’re going so fast, there’s no way anyone can keep up with your lessons unless they already know this information. You’re trying to cram about 3 hours worth of information into nine minutes.
I understand your point of view. In the beginning, our channel was designed more for intermediate and advanced students. We do have some other videos like relative pronouns that we realized afterward that it was too much content at once. We're learning as we go! Hope you can get something out of our other videos! We're here to help!
