In this series, we're delving into video game oblivion.
Titles that have, at some point, fallen into obscurity.
Today, we're talking about Onimusha: Warlords (Capcom, 2001) - a unique mix of survival horror and action adventure that marries the Resident Evil Formula with Japanese Shinto mythology.

I first played this game when I was 16. Now I'm 32. Damn. Feels like yesterday!
I remember back when CZcams didn't exist and all a game's secrets weren't immediately discovered and shared online. I remember discovering issen by accident and trying to figure out how to do it consistently. I remember reading a guide on GameFAQs that was far from comprehensive or finished.
Back then we didn't have trophies/achievements. It was up to gaming communities to come up with challenges, so someone in Onimusha's GameFAQs message board came up with the idea for a starting katana run! A challenge that would have been about as masochistic as playing Resident Evil 2 with just the knife-which people have done-if it weren't for issen!
Thankfully, I always loved the starting katana because in my eyes it was by far the most beautiful of Samanosuke's weapons, so I immediately pounced onto the opportunity to replay the game with this self-imposed limitation ... and it was _glorious!_ I loved the combat so much that I did the Bishamon sword sidequest, too. And then I still hadn't had enough, so I did it all again!!
16 years and no other game has scratched that particular itch. Sekiro or Ghost of Tsushima might come close, but I'm still _extremely_ happy that Capcom is doing this and I can't wait to get my hands on the remaster and do another katana run ❤

Between the tales of Samanosuke Akechi and Yagyū Jūbei, the latter's may have been the most heartfelt, but Akechi-san will forever be the heart and soul of the franchise! Brilliant analysis on a timeless classic! :D

I don't know about others, but I LOVE 90's/early 2000's English voice acting for Japanese games. A lot of people consider it bad and maybe it is, but there is something so charming about it. It's so pure and just honest, even if it is amateur. Reminds me of being a kid. The original Witcher is another one of my favorite games and the voice acting in that is really awkward at times, but there is just something really charming about dubs to me.

So glad you finally cover this game. Onimusha is essentially the original "souls_like" games & possibly even the grandpa of DMC series.
Also, you kinda forgot on mentioning that Onimusha also featured 3D model character from IRL actor & motion capture techs in an action video game which was I think pretty ground breaking at the time.
Now please do Front Mission series next!! #forgottengems

And it was a horrible port

It was an acceptable port tbh. Sure, it didn't support widescreen or Xinput controllers, but those weren't the standard in 2003.
The real problem is that it was released only in Asia and Russia.

@@jigendaisuke8962 i disagree in regards to it being anywhere decent. 90% of people had and still have huge frame rate issues, its locked at 640×480 i believe and so many graphical issues on everything i tried to run it on(windows xp,7,8.1,10-nothing changed).

    • @camaraslaurentiu3811

It was a lazy port...no matter how much u try to justify it. I did try on xp even in 2007 and it had visual glitches up the wazoo and 15 fps was the norm.Other games were ported earlier and dont have that many issues as this port. In 2003 i did expect it to not be locked at 640x480 or better be told...i expected at least 30fps if not 60...just saying

Dude, you should take a look at the first Grandia game for the PS1. Most of your Forgotten Gems have been my favorite childhood games and Grandia would be another addition to that list!
Great work with the videos btw, keep it up

Glad to hear that it's getting a remaster, since for whatever reason I passed on Onimusha. More of a DMC guy, I guess. While I disagree about games like Dark Souls providing more thoughtful combat than most hack and slash/character action games, (DmC 2013 excluded) nice to know that there's still a market for these kinds of slower action games.

Man, I was first introduced to the Onimusha series when I got my PS2 as a birthday present but had no games to play on it.
So every other month, my friends lent me some of his games -bless his kind heart- and one day he lent me Onimusha 4: Dawn of Dreams.
The combat looked and felt very action-packed, with an interesting setting and great music, I was quickly hooked and beat the game in a week.
...Only to realize on my second playthrough how to equip other weapons.
Sadly, he didn't have the other games, but I cherished what time I had with the fourth game and looked at some videos of the previous games on youtube.

I love Onimusha, and Samonosuke is one of my favourite characters. He's so heroic! Between Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 2 and Onimusha, 2001 was a special year, for me. I still play all of these games to this day. Usually, IF I'm lucky, there's just one game per year that has that kind of staying power for me, but even that's not common. There's nothing from 2002-2004, for example. And then in 2005/6, we got the updated version of MGS 3, and we got God Hand and DMC 3. These are also games that I continue to play today.
Anyways, I can't wait for the HD Remaster of Onimusha. It means that, as an Englishman, I'm finally going to be able to play the game at full 60hz, rather than the slower 50hz that I've been limited to since its 2001 release.

The opening and ending cinematics were really high quality, and that goes for the entire trilogy. I used to keep a save file near the end so I could rewatch whenever I wanted.
