Almost no rugby players have been confirmed as having CTE, whereas hundreds of American Football players have. That should speak about just how hard the hits are.
GusBusGaming rugby players hit much softer considering they do not have pads whereas football players completely lay themselves out with the mentality they cannot get hurt as much because they have pads on. Rugby is much more technical with their hits, because they do not want to get injured when they perform a tackle therefore softer than football.

Matthew Mahala I see it more as because rugby players aren't as big and most of them don't try to tackle each other (it's more strategic in terms of who to tackle and when), there was never a need for protective clothing, whereas you have concussions every single game regardless of protection in the NFL. I've never heard of players having that mindset, I've never heard of players thinking they're invincible from the shoulder and knee pads...

There have been studies done that show the average nfl hit is harder than professional rugby. The pads trick your mind into thinking you can't get hurt, and that mentality allows them to hit harder.
Football hits are nearly 3× harder than rugby hits. Search up the sports science on it

I love both Rugby and NFL but OC is straight wrong. Neither is softer than the other. NFL is more explosive and focuses more on strength and intense bursts of speed or flying into a tackle at maximum speed thats why they need pads. Rugby is more endurance and skill based yet can also produce some incredibly hard hits. Rugby is alot more fast paced action and NFL is stop start because it needs to be. You just can't carry that much muscle mass and expect to last for more than 2 minutes running time. Yet you see bits of everything in both sports though. Much respect too people who play either professionaly

Rugby soft we use no padding and nfl wear full padding with helmets
Because we actually die playing football and that's with using padding and even more died with no padding and we have a higher risk of cte.
Our rules are different, we hit eachother much harder in American football. If you went to a game you could hear the clang of the helmets all the way up in the sands

How people are getting butthurt over rugby, I play rugby myself and it's alot more softer than the NFL and that's why they have "so much padding"
To be fair I love both rugby and NFL but sorry I think NFL is much more violent and harder as the pads don't protect you they are more like weapons and stoping and starting means they go all out at every play sorry rugby ( I am English )

Not a fan of NFL or rugby, but I'd say the hits are harder in the NFL. Both are rough and dangerous sports, but I'd feel safer playing rugby than I would American Football.

Yeah I realise that. I know there's rugby players that are just as fast as the NFL players but the hits in the NFL seem a lot more head on. It would be fun to watch if it was continuous play, rather than throw the ball and strategise with the manager for 10 minutes.

Even though they wear pads the force exerted on their body will be 3 times more powerful compared to rugby, and all that kinetic energy can't just disappear, it has to go somewhere (into the player). So technically American football hits a lot harder. But rugby has a lot more cardio. End of story

NFL players wear pads for protection, but the same pads also allow them to hit with 100% power and not worry about getting injured. I play football and rugby and I can tell you that football hits are generally harder (not every single hit but on average) than rugby hits.

These comments are so butthurt after the rugby comment lmao. The "pads" that NFL players use are used as weapons more than they are used for protection. Not only do they increase the strength of the hits, but since the players have these pads they never hold back with the hits. The NFL hits are way stronger than Rugby hits, and it's not even close

What I am really saying is Football players with pads on will have kind of this mental edge, feeling sort of invincible. So they tend to put they're body on line, that's why theirs so many gruesome injuries in football. Most of the time in rugby I've seen there is a lot of technique into tackling, and I'm not saying football doesn't have tackling technique, but with pads you can make such crazy and powerful tackles you don't need technique some times.
