My Papaw wore the Redwing boots everyday from the time I was old enough to remember until he passed. His lasted many years (especially the uppers) but, as you said, different use! For the majority of my life he was "retired" which meant he farmed and raised cattle and catfish. Funny how those old Redwings are an image that will always stick with me, and any time I see someone with a similar pair, I think of him.

I know someone who stepped on a 1/2"crown staple with sneakers on.The glue from the sneaker construction was pushed up into his foot, long story short he ended up having surgery to scrape the infection off the bone in his foot that was degrading from infection.Good boots are a true value in the long run.

Oh, my word! Jim was a rancher who drove a school bus. Neil was a well-known jazz drummer who owned Dixonville store with his wife and drove school bus, our route to be exact. Both those guys made sure the bus was safe- there was no bullying on their buses-ever! The Hatfield's flower garden every year with the date? Betty and Doris-what women. I didn't even get the women's movement of my college days because EVERY woman I knew was strong and doing just what she wanted. Strong men, strong women. Thanks for the wonderful Dixonville memories.

I got my first job when I was eleven years old, ( paying job that is ) working on the farm. I needed a pair of boots so I asked my dad what kind to get. He said that was what I had to figure out, that every persons feet are different, they walk differently, they work differently, no two are alike !
But he also told me to take care of my feet and not be afraid to try different boots until I found ones that work for me, best advice I ever got !
Thanks for sharing and take care.

My grandfather was a carpenter. He wore nothing but Red Wing Moc Toe boots. Every day of his life. I remember every day after dinner. he would sit down on the couch. Unlace his boots, pop in a pinch of Copenhagen snuff and watch the news. Once the boots were off, he was done working for the day.

Have cruised timber for 45 years - your leather moc toe recommendations are spot on - soles are easy on your feet & light weight.
2 things are boot gospel to me (1) Never, ever buy a boot without lacing hooks - a must. (2) Don't spend big bucks on high dollar oils - rub toilet wax rings into the leather & use a blow dryer to melt deep into the leather.

    • @bobd.
      @bobd. Před 5 lety

Do you get new or used wax rings? :-) What you wear depends on what you're doing. Spent a good portion of my career working around welding and cutting operations, a boot without laces is better for that, nothing to catch the hot slag. Ever had a piece of molten slag get in your boot, you'll want to get them off FAST, laces get in the way, a few seconds can be the difference between a minor burn and being out of work for a few days.

I am not married to a certain brand but as I have heard a man say spend the most money on your boots and your bed because if your not in one your in the other. This is so true. I did the KMart thing for a long time, until my Dad sent me a spare pair of "Military issue" boots he had bought just before retiring. I liked them so much, that when I finally wore them out and destroyed them, I went to Bates' website, bought a pair of "paratrooper boots" and have not looked back. I have ankle problems and wear boots most of the time. The right boot is so important and once you finally find it, it's worth every penny to stick with them. On a side note.... if you're going to spend big on a set of really good boots, and they have polishing or other care requirements, learn. Learn the right way to care for them and take the extra time. I bought my most recent pair in February, and six months later (After working on concrete, riding motorcycles, dropping trees, welding... etc), they still look like I've barely used them.
Great episode Nate! Looking forward to your next!!

Just bought some New Balance 989. Composite toe, tons of ANSI safety ratings (down live wire, oil & gas, oil slip, toe cap). Extremely light. Tons of grip. Works great on and off a ladder. Relieved heel so you can get in and out fast while still having roll protection. Vented around the rear of the ankle so no sweat. Short enough top that you can wear normal socks. I only have a couple days on them so far, but so far they are excellent. They are essentially a hiking boot with a ton of safety and comfort features. They are made for pounding concrete in an industrial setting.

Also, on a lark, I bought a pair of steel toe Skechers work boots, for under $80, and they were one of the best boots I've ever had. I went through building a 360,000 sq ft VA office building, a $65M elementary school, and about 22 houses, before I retired them.

That's a good price. I have a pair of RW 899s that were my first boot once I stopped growing. I've had them for about 4 years now, and I just had my first set of eyelets installed. The lower is fine, the sole still has tread, but the tongue is getting pretty beat. I never really liked the crepe soles, but I guess they have their place. I try to oil them monthly or every other month, which I think is one of the most under discuessed but most important aspects of a boot.

It is pouring down rain and my shoes are soaked like I'm standing in a lake. I said never again will I be hurt or wet on the job. It's true that the moc toe does give the most room in the toe box, but the only other thing to consider is that it is a two piece toe. Meaning it is made of the sides as one piece and the top and another. That two piece aspect is why it's roomier. But it's also a weak point for water to get in. Anytime you have any kind of seam, water can get through it, regardless of leather treatment. If you going to work in dry environments, that's fine. If there's times you are in wet environments, you will get water inside them. It's not always a bad thing and it does give interior moisture a way out too. It's just good to be aware of it

I have a nice set of Redwing mocs that I love and have definitely put through their paces, but these days with old hips and knees I find myself grabbing a touch hiking boot more often than not. Keen Durand, made in USA, tough as a work boot, but comfortable as a tennis shoe. I only wish they would have been available when my pop was around and doing his Millwright work so I could have bought him a pair to try. Sears/Die Hard boots huh! Poor Sears. I wonder if these boots will be around much longer.
I've got Craftsman tools I bought from them fifty years ago (circa 1967) that are functionally still like new. No other tools I've bought are like that. I hope the company that bought Craftsman continues that tradition.

I'm battling with plantar fasciitis and no matter how good I though my boots were, they still needed a special insole. Until I purchased my first set of Cat Excavator boots. I'm convinced they are doing a great job of protecting my feet and healing them; however, I'm a heavy guy and I go through insoles like crazy. I want the oem Cat insoles that come with these boots and can't find them anywhere.

Red Wing's US-made #606 is my work boot... Granted, I'm not working in a trade currently, but I get at least 5-6 years of daily wear out of a pair. I oil them a couple of times per month and when the sole finally wears through, it's time to send them in to be resoled and relegated to my "hard use" pair.

Sears used to sell an 8 inch steel toe thinsulate work boot. I'd bought them and wore them since the mid 90's. Swore by them but I could never afford more than a $40 work boot. Wasn't until much later that I understood that you actually save money by spending more when it comes to a quality product.

Hey Scott, I've been doing all sorts of carpentry work for years. I've worn red wing, a variety of the hiking shoes (I like Merrill's the best of that lot), but far and away, the best, most comfortable boot that I have worn is LL Bean Katahdin engineer boots- PLAIN TOE. After the initial break in period of about a week, these boots feel like slippers, yet they are tough.
Bean does offer a boot similar to the plain toe.... I think it's a toe cap type thing. I have burned thru 3 pairs of these in 3 years ( the toe cap stitching wore out) but thankfully, Bean replaced them.... yep. 3 times. My argument was that a $200 pair of boots should last longer than a year. Bean agreed.
Anyway, if you or anyone reading this is interested in a GREAT pair of boots, give LL Bean Katahdin engineer boots a whirl. Comfy, tough, look great, and you simply can't beat Bean's no hassle guarantee.
Love the videos. Keep em coming.
Btw, bought myself a birthday gift per your recommendation.....I got a 14oz Stilletto. OMG!!!!!! What a treat. Thanks for that tip.

Great Video! My work boot of choice is Keen. I absolutely love them so far. Steel toe, water proof, black, with a big rubber kicker on the front. Lasted me about a year so far on concrete factory floors, and now as an apprentice electrician, and going strong. Only downside with these particular Keens, I assume because of the good thick leather combined with waterproofing, is that they do NOT breathe at all. Had to buy smelly good inserts made of charcoal, and cedar to try and mitigate the sweat. I still love these things to death.

The Diehards today are NOT the Diehards of the 80's and 90's. They are Chinese junk that the soles disintegrate and crumble especially in the Florida UV & Heat. The sad thing is that the beautiful reddish brown leather of the 1980's Diehards has swung full circle to the fake noggahyde look of the cheap K-Mart boots you started wearing. Probably because K-Mart married Sears...

STICKER SHOCK.....I purchased a pair of moc toes put out by Browning. I'm sure they were made by an outsourced name brand manufacturer. I remember I paid $85 for them at the now defunct Gander Mountain. I like the ankle support for hard work, and even hiking, hunting etc. Love those boots! After about 10 years it comes time for a resole. Dropped them off and went to pick them up a few days later. I was stunned when the bill came out to 70 bucks. I thought gheesh I could have bout a new pair for what....$30 more. Then I got to thinkin, maybe not my first time reroof cost me $2,600, the 2nd 17 years later cost me $10,000. I'm sure those soles had petroleum products in them, thus the huge cost increases for resole.

I walk 5-10 miles a day delivering beer with a handcart and it handles the abuse and elements with no problem! Sure there is wear and tear but I put these boots on at 4am and sometimes don't take them off till 7pm and it feels like I have been wearing slippers the whole time. To each there own! Red Wing 877's are a great boot. However, in order to get the best boot, you MUST be certain you are getting the "heritage" series boot. They make two different qualities of boot, that look the same, but are far from the same quality. Also, red Wing has what they call the "work boot sole". It has the look of the waffle sole, but has a hard rubber layer on the bottom, just like sears die hard boot. The rubber layer makes the sole last three times longer, at least. In the correct configuration, of the heritage series 877, and the work boot sole, you can't get a better moc toe 8" work boot. Just my opinion.

I love it! I do have a pair of Red Wing 8" with cushion cuff, insole and soles. They are great. I was a bricklayer and have had these shoes over 15 years. Those soles are in pretty good shape except where I was standing on a rope to maintain tension and it slipped and my sole suffered a deep slot cut just in front of the right heel. I still wear them. My first work shoes? Montgomery Ward cork sole hard heel and NO cushion at all insole. Round toes which after a while were easy to get smashed against my toes. Politics, Religion and Work Shoes...Ha Ha, I love it, Greg (retired meticulous arranger of artistic burnt clay products)

I'm tried several different makes of boots through the years. When really got serious about boots I wore wolverines for the better part of a decade. Then I tried timberlands. Next I wore caterpillars. They all had attributes that I desired at each phase of my career. The wolverines had good shock absorption for working on concrete floors for long periods of time but they did not hold up well over time. The timberlands were decent tough work boots but they were uncomfortable to wear while driving from projects to project in. The caterpillars were comfortable to wear whole driving and are significantly lighter than the timberlands. None of them offered good arch support and as a result I developed planter facititis from a collapsed arch. Now I've found what is for my purposes the penultimate work boot. Mongrel from Australia. The model I've worn for nearly a year corrected my arch issue and they are rugged, light and as an extra benefit they have a side zipper (in addition to laces) that makes them quick and easy to both slip into and take off. I'll be ordering them for the foreseeable future.

I tried to like Red Wing. Three pair worth of different styles if memory serves me. Expensive lesson to learn that I do not care for them. Sears... Hate to say it but that company's days are numbered. Danner boots have been my work boot of choice for quite a while now, but still have their shortcomings. My daily driver have been Ariat's forever. When a pair wear out I always try on other brands but every time the Ariat fits me the best.

I rock Red Wings. Partly because I get a discount through an affiliation with my work and because they have been the best boots that I’ve found for my feet. I’ve not been happy with Wolverines, Carhart, Die-Hard, etc.
I’ve also heard great things about Danner but I believe those are mostly for logging. The ones that I’ve seen look too tall for my liking.

Wait, people frame in your area while wearing something without a hard toe cap? I can't imagine being on a job site without a hard toed boot.
A good leather boot with ablative patches glued on over the most common scuff areas isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but they sure are useful and can last awhile.

I love those stories! There's a local cobbler here in Bridgewater NS Canada still and he will put alittle epoxy on the toe almost like how some modern Boots use rubber now. I tried that on my toe and my heel a couple spots I know I was hard on especially when ur taking boots off they can fail if ur like me and pry it off with my foot after its loosened lol. The expoxy has been working excellent and has seemed to really make my boot last alittle better :) it must be one of those old salts tricks
