I love these beautiful pictures of the Polynesian cultures. They don’t get enough credit in my opinion. This was a great way to tell a precious story. Such a beautiful culture, and such beautiful and powerful people who lived upon the pacific. True warriors in my eyes, and should be shown to the world. I wanted to give my thanks for all the short films everyone has been creating over the years. God bless

this is why i hate the commercialization of kava in the western world (kava bars, flavored kava sachets). It becomes stripped of cultural importance and reverence. Kava didn't die to be served in a bar called 'Kavasutra' foh

I don't agree. The word "Western World" is stripping others of experiencing the culture. It is a safe alternative to Alcohol and when people realize they like it, they will research what is in it and where it came from. You are over generalizing.

@@milehighbry8584 Screw your experience. This drink was never made to replace an alcoholic addiction. If that's what they want, they can take their ass to alcoholics anonymous. Too many Western people bastardize my culture by nitpicking what fits with them thus stripping it of its meaning and sacredness. Then they wanna call it an "experience". Well this experience you speak of is to be lived, raised by and passed down. Also to the Polynesians who sell our culture for money, shame on them. This video only tells one aspect of its importance to us as opposed to hundreds. My ancestors cultivated, bled and died over it's existence. Something you will never "experience" at a bar. Only a bunch of ignorant man buns hiding behind the words "Cultural experience".

Alot of you guys don't know that back before christianity in Tonga flesh was at one point food!. The fishes in the water, nor pigs, or any other leavings was as important as human flesh. As for this story, "because there was only one family in the Island and lord knows how long they've been there far from the main Island to know changes, food from water wasn't high enough to serve the King". That's why they made such decision. I grew up learning about this story ever since I could even spell Kava with capital letter and I had my questions aswell. If you guys didn't know there are some portrayals from different villages inTonga about this amazing story this days. But this is the real story, that's honesty and if you hear any different story from this one that's one of the fake one🌴

I’m from Vanuatu and coming from a South Pacific region with 80 varieties of different kava to be exact, we on the other hand have another twisted kava history on here.
If to anyone’s interest, long story short it is based on domestic violence where a woman from the island of Pentecost cheated on her husband and he ended up murdering her; cut off her head and dug it separating it to the rest of her body organs. Her natty hair later then sprouted and grew to the Kava roots we now drink today .
All in all given all these South Pacific kava history and myths I do believe kava is from a Goddess herself .

if the choice is between alcohol and kava: There's a Hawaiian saying, a man who drinks kava stays a man, a man who drinks liquor becomes a beast. Kava is also grown in Vanuatu, and Hawaii and countless other islands, all with different traditions. If you want to keep it sacred on your island, good for you. But kava doesn't belong to Kiribati, or even Tonga, alone.

The old religions ...there were human sacrifice....giving of life to preserve life ....Polynesian ancestors first settling the islands ...they were all barren ...the food they took with them pig, dog , chicken taro, yams etc....It was important that they took food there..that the live stock make it there alive...it meant there survival livelihood .....
From the stories of old depict a people who's honor, loyalty was on a different level....their beliefs etc ..talk was cheap ..you had to demonstrate it ..show it ...
There's another version to this same story.....it was believed Kava was the Tuitonga's daughter to a fijian woman who fled learning she was pregnant....some of the Tuitonga's advisor ordered she be killed....the killers couldn't kill the child when they caught up to the mother...they took the child to Eueiki to the two parents on this video....and supposedly they kept her with the pigs to hide her...Kava developed a skin disease supposedly a leper ...and a famine plaque struck the land ..killing live stock etc...than the Tuitonga pulls up resting on the last edible food they had to prepare and offer the Tuitonga 😂😂😂😂 they offered Kava.......the Tuitonga would be the Tuitonga Tuitatui/Tafeta because supposedly the first drinking of the Kava began with him in Heketa/ Haamonga a Maui .....just what i heard ....enjoyed the video 💪🏽❤🇹🇴

similar story as the Sakau (kava) here in Pohnpei....these two Gods buried a body Skin and became a sakau Plant.... South Pacific call it Kava..North Pacific call it Sakau...

Very similar in Pohnpei. Very traditional.
No one has claim over it like no one has claim over sugarcane. However, this tree is considered very important for it has cultural and traditional values in the Pacific.

Im Hapa Haole (White and Hawaiian). When I was in college I had Tongan friend named Mafu, we use to work out in the gym and just blow away others by how strong and big we got. We would tell them its in the blood.
