  • Meet The Gaffer #339. A first look at another modifier for you Nanlux Evoke 2400B, a front mounting fresnel! Because it's the same diameter as the fresnel you may already be using with your Evoke 1200B, we thought we'd compare the two... and the 2400B's 45 degree intensifier.

    Great video, I always appreciate your coverage. I have those same Impact stands and they're great for all my dolly purposes. However I was disappointed to discover that the receiving end was too small for some of my Matthews junior pin accessories like the 4 1/2" hollywood grip head. I believe they changed it and issued an RMA but it's something to check if that's important to you when you buy them.

      Yes, the receiver opening has been updated.

    Thank you as always! Will you be doing a comparison of the m40 and nanlux 2400 with the fresnel? I'd love to know a real world measure of the 2400b at full spot at 10' away.

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I may revisit when all the intensifiers are also available, but for my work the M40 doesn’t really factor in anymore unless I need more 2400B’s than are available… which is not a pressing concern.

    Please correct me if I’m wrong, but after looking at the result output of this 2400B + fresnel (in comparison to the 1200B), I’d have to say it’s under performing in what I was hoping to see in your test results. 2400 watts should be one stop brighter than a 1200 watt lamp. I was expecting the output for 2400B in FS to be closer to 1800fc. And double the output for the other comparisons as well. Great test Luke thanks for sharing.

      I think that’s the initial takeaway, but when I step back and consider what the alternative would be, larger/heavier/spendier, this fresnel has plenty to recommend it as another modifier to go along with the existing intensifiers.

      For 1.7 times the price I would expect 1.7 times the output. Not 1.2.

    hi Luke re. the cowl cutting the beam in flood - can you see a hard edge projected against a wall ?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Před 2 měsíci

      No. So I don’t think it is actually cutting it, but it makes you wonder how it works in terms of physics.

    Did Nanlux give a reason for not putting a yoke on FL-35E? Not loving the front heaviness, output and weight of the unit. Nanlux needs to take a look at Prolycht's Fresnel for the 675fs. A nice compact light weight design.

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Před 3 měsíci +1

      There are always compromises when it comes to designing optical accessories. The 2400B is just enough larger than the 1200B so as not to fit inside the housing, which would have meant creating a larger housing and larger fresnel. It’s possible that that would have been better for weight distribution and optics, but then size, overall weight, and unwieldiness come into play. I’m sure they made many mock-ups to find the best solution with the fewest compromises. As far as a diminutive fresnel goes, they have created a lighter weight version for the 900c, but heat becomes an issue with the larger units, so you need a way to deal with that. Overall, Nanlux is doing a great job listening and delivering within the constraints we put on them to keep units relatively functional for slimmed down crews and truck space.

    Hey really nice work! I want to buy some lights for professional work and im wondering how much power I need. If you dont mind the question. In your experience in how many shoots percentage wise do you need light above 500w?

    • @meetthegaffer
      @meetthegaffer  Před 8 dny

      Interesting question. I think for what I do it’s less about need and more about want. A lot of interview/B-roll jobs could be done with one 600w unit and a number of lower watt units. Many doc DP’s are set up this way with their personal kit. They often call me when they need to go bigger or move faster or rig something or have to deal with windows that their units can’t overpower. So maybe start small and add larger, higher watt units when it’s something you feel you could use to better light the sets you’re on.

    Hi, I just bought the 2400b and the fresnel e. The lock on the 2400b for me isn’t strong enough to hold the fresnel. Any ideas?

      Are you making sure the non-kip-handled side is also tight? I would also order a second kip angle so you have one on both sides.

      I can try tightening the non handle side further. Any ideas where to get the second handle?

      @Nauwl I would go directly to Nanlux Americas if you are in the US or your local Nanlux dealer. I’ve been meaning to do the same. Ping me if you have difficulty.

      I haven't tried it yet so a bit of speculation but back when Chimeras were popular with the Arri 1200PARs and 2k open-face I used to hang a 10 lb. shot bag to the rear handle with a carabiner to even out the weight difference.

    • @Nauwl
      @Nauwl Před 16 dny

      @@alansteinheimer4274 we use straps and hook itself to the styrup. kinda iffy solution but it works until they offer a solution (which i think they are soon). shotbag would be to much add weight whenhaving it on a 30kg windup sadly. but thanks for the suggestions
