A big cargo lost power and was carried by the current directly to one of the columns of the huge and busy Zarate-Brazo Largo bridge (made of concrete). But the columns are surrounded by massive concrete protections, so the ship finally hit one of these protections, opening a hole on the bow, but the bridge was safe

How is it possible that the Port Authority of Baltimore allows a 300 meter long ship carrying more than 10,000 containers to sail without tugboats with the obstacle of a bridge built and designed for ships to pass through in the 70s? >>>> Here you can see how from the port of Mugardos (SPAIN) where I work, a gas carrier with a capacity of 150,000 cubic meters and 300 meters in length is supported at all times by 4 tugboats from more than 4 nautical miles at least to access an estuary whose narrowest point of the channel measures the same as the span of the Baltimore Bridge through which the container ship crossed. It's not a question of money, it's a question of something simpler: SECURITY. And this is how we do it in Spain -> czcams.com/video/p1nlAoFBWWw/video.html

Those container ships can do a lot of damage, especially when loaded with cargo containers, but it seems like poor bridge design when hitting one support point collapses the entire bridge so easily. It wouldn't hurt to have some sort of underwater barriers on both sides that prevent large vessels from approaching the bridge except in the area meant to be used to pass under the bridge would prevent the bridge from being hit. The point where ships pass under the bridge could have bumper barriers that would prevent ships from straying side to side and clipping one of the supports as it passes through. Also, a warning system that would alert the ship's captain and crew, and another warning system for the traffic on the bridge that would allow them sufficient time to get off of the bridge would help towards preventing loss of life.

If you look carefully, you can see the bow of the ship impacting them (look starboard on the bow, near water line) and just utterly pulverizing them, then moving right through b4 hitting the main support pier. There was also apparently a small support pier for an electric transmission line paralleling the bridge that the ship plowed through b4 hitting the bridge pier. 100,000 tons moving 10 knots is a lot of energy.
