Is using server commands like !giveitems cheating?
Downloading third party software to award something on your Steam account that you didn't do the intended way definitely doesn't sound like legal behaviour to me, and Steam's Subscriber Agreement is just broad enough to cover this activity, even if it doesn't give you a competitive advantage store.steampowered.com/subscr...
If you've used SAM or achievement servers to get free hats in TF2, or any other reason, you probably don't need to worry. There's no record of anyone getting banned for using SAM or achievement servers, nor for providing the software. But that doesn't change the fact that unauthorised software changing your Steam account data is the very definitely of a cheat.

Some achievements are not obtainable anymore in some games because the online is taken down, so yeah I don’t think that unlocking only those for the 100% is cheating at all

Huh. Never knew it was chat commands that achivement servers operated of off. I thoght thier maps were just made in a way to make the grinding of achivement between players go faster.
That's part of it, but the chat command also exists to trigger all the item based achievements. The chat command itself doesn't do anything (they could make the command any words they choose !givecheeseburger for example) but that then triggers a "mod" on the server which tells Steam "this user just did the conditions for all of these achievements!" even though they of course didn't

On steam kind of... I love grinding for 100% achievements on games I play and seeing the 0.01% of people having completed it... by unlocking those for free that number goes up and undermines other peoples hard work.

I did this, but not for any virtual money. When I was a kid, I didn't actually know what SAM was or what it'd do. I genuinely was just curious and as a meme - decided to just use *SAM on CSGO to unlock all achievements* not giving a single shit or realising the vast quantities of achievements I would actually unlock and how SUS it really is.
I don't want all these achievements but I can't relock them otherwise I could actually trigger a VAC ban because of my retarded arse.
@@faei1897 Technically, games can legitimately relock achievements. It happens in the Stanley Parable Demo, where at some point you get an achievement although the game takes it away shortly after.
I'm going to say it's actually OK to use it to complete achievements that are impossible to achieve. It's not our fault Valve can't make their game work correctly.
Like the CZcams achievements upload a replay to CZcams and have it get 100000 views is now impossible because CZcams changed

I had seen so many achievement bugs. It really pisses You off when You play a game for hours a bunch of achievements don't work and You are not sure if you did something wrong or is it really bugged
I unlocked all the achievement hats by earning them, I only got the bugged ones through an achievement server.

Cheating is cheating, yes, but a bug is a bug. If I can’t get an achievement due to a bug, but I do what the achievement asked me to do, yes I will SAM that achievement.

I have used SAM exactly once, to get a few achievements in Rust that I did like a million times and they wouldn't work. I'm pretty OCD and sometimes a purist, and I don't see my actions as cheating.
Because it's not so long as you're sure you met the requirements and the game was actually bugged. If you're cheating because you gave yourself an achievement that steam didn't give you, then you're just cheating a system that cheated you out of an achievement.
I'm not going to make an entire new save on Sekiro just because a well-known bugged achievement randomy doesn't proc and three years later they still haven't fixed it.
I don't really see anything wrong with SAM. Is it cheating? Yes. It absolutely is.
Does it give you an unfair advantage against enemy players like aimbot or spinbot? No. It just lets you complete something for an item that makes you look cooler.

Steam doesn't ban SAM cuz there's nothing to ban it for. SAM is nothing more than a frontend app for Valve's own public Steam API. The same things you do with SAM you can do on your own Steam client console, SAM only makes it easier and prettier. It's nothing against Steam's ToS and that's why it will never be banned

Well, while the use of it is cheating by definition, the guidelines you showed are applied to the steam marketplace, not the products steam sells, therefore, this explains why the people who have used SAM haven't been banned, or ever will. And even then, they can't profit off of these items, and the items they do get aren't good looking or valued by most. For example, Gibus and such other hats are often mocked for, by toxic players, so some f2p's won't even wear them.
Regardless - it is cheating by definition, but it is not by how valve handles it. In their eyes, if you want a couple weapons and a few shitty hats, sure, whatever.

It should be considered how much the other players are affected by a cheat. I mean, cheating in a game like cs or paladins spoils the experience for others, but if you use a cheat in a single player game you practically don't bother anyone
I actually didn't know this was a thing and it helped me. Basically I sinked 40h in one game only to one simple achievement not trigger. So I used this only to ''correct'' the bug. I don't like to cheat achievements but I didn't feel bad - I'd probably use it again if something like that ever happened again

that statement is put in place to prevent automated buying/ selling or cheating steam out of money in marketplace transactions.
An achievement is nothing more than knowing yourself that you was good enough to do it (what ever it is) and the game confirming it.

Back in my day achievement servers actually just had specially crafted areas on maps to help you do those achievements, not typing a command in chat.

Depends on what you're using them for, I've used it on like 2-3 games where I did what was required to get an achievement, yet for some reason the achievement didn't pop. So SAM is useful for making those pop. I think Stardew's Valley "Complete Shipment" was one such achievement for me, and the game has an in-game tab of stuff that you have to ship for it. I was tempted to use it for Tower Wars. For Tower Wars, I was gonna increase my achievement % for the game by getting what I could, but then I learned that because the rank servers were shut down and something else(I think the mod manager or something, I forget), the highest % I could've gotten for the game was like 30-40%, I didn't do the math though. The achievements that I COULD get sounded painful to get for somebody popping into the game years after the fact so I lost motivation to get those. It didn't seem right to use SAM to get the defunct achievements for a game that I wasn't 100%ing anyways, especially because I PROBABLY wouldn't have gotten them even if the servers were up.
I really wish Devs would stop implementing achievements that require such a server to begin with.
I am not sure how these things work, but thank you, I was afraid that using SAM to delete achievements might cause problems, on a valve game or not (for EU4 specifically, I did a few achievements using cheats, and wanted to get them legitimately)
When I was a young and budding Free2Play I too went onto one of these achievement servers to unlock some weapons I really wanted.
I had no idea about the economy and I was getting desperate to use some of the weapons my favourite content creators were (wrangler, unersaw etc.)
I did regret it though. I ended up using SAM to reset my achievements and now I live in fear that Valve will one day bring out the banhammer on me. Only time will tell.

But hey, even though it is quite unfair, it is still not as worse as LMAOBOX cheats or sth like that since our goals are just to get items. FYI: The kickstarter for the game was closed long before I bought (or even heard about) the game.
I just use SAM to unlock all of those achievements in the puzzle games which would give you some cool symbols, to show off on your profile page's achievement showcase.

The reason for which I'd use this is quite interesting:
Recently, I tried the givemeall command on a server and after that, I felt quite ashamed of myself so I decided to reset my achievements.
Well, now, I'd use SAM to give myself back the achievements that, for me, where taken by pure chance, like the Merasmus Tune thing or the Prime Cuts, which was literally random, achievements that, again, I had on my account before.
Is it really that bad if I want to get back the achievements I already had?( except for those that are in your control)?

I’ve only ever used this for 2 achievements. One, Legend for TES 5 because it was horribly bugged and there was no issues found except for using the SAM. Two, Polamory in Dying Light is near impossible to get because there’s nobody to play with anymore.

I remember when Poker Night 2 released, I played through the game and earned the unlockables in offline mode - I had a different mentality to gaming back then, I kept to myself and friends and I was never online with any account unless I wanted to play multiplayer - only to find to my devastation that the game didn't keep track of achievements when offline, which is something I hadn't seen before. You could only earn them while online. So my only option to actually get the TF2 items would have been to reset my progress and start all over again.

Here's my stance on cheats: It's like having super powers. You can either be a hero, only using them for good and when you absolutely must, or a villain. Depends entirely on what you do with that great responsibility.
This extends to everywhere in gaming. Sometimes games bug out and you lose a ton of progress to no fault of your own. Thank goodness for cheats, as long as it's for single-player or co-op purposes.

I remember playing black squad when it had a bunch of bugged achievements. I spent hours trying to redo a bunch of achievments not knowing that it was really bugged or I was making a mistake.

Basically yes, but there are some achievements you can't obtain anymore like Batman Arkham Origins' online mode. So I guess "cheating" there is not so bad
I did play a few hours on achivement servers but i never really used the oh so obvious "!giveitems" command until i even knew about it, honestly i just wanted the replay mode achivements which i didn't know were broken at the time (AKA around a year ago). So i was just done with it, but around...90% of the achivements ive gotten on TF2 were done with my own skill (And alot of kills againts my friend ;3) the only reason i go on achivement servers now is just...trying to farm my Strange Winger...if i can that is.

I sadly have to admit, that I once cheated like this. And it’s a long story why I did so.
It starts about 3 years ago when after two years of tf2 I didn’t quite feel the same enjoyment anymore.
I gave ALL my items to my brother (wich were a lot), and stopped playing tf2. But after half a year I Started to miss the game.
I picked it up again just to realize that I don’t have any items. By then my brother had traded away all my items. I felt sad, and to fill that itemless account, I installed one of those SAM things. I unlocked all the tf2 achievements and kept it that way for a long time.
Then I stopped playing again.
And half a year after the jungle inferno update, I picked up the game AGAIN.
Feeling ashamed of myself for using a SAM, I booted up the SAM and took away all my items for tf2 (wich is the only Game I used it for).
Since then I looked like a new free 2 play, but at least I had the contracter to get some contract cosmetics.
By now I have some more items. either by drops or from unboxing them.
Self control next time. Do something easy. Unlock achievements that are unobtainable, get the items for it, then uninstall the app. Easy peasy.
When I was younger I used SAM to unlock all achievements to get TF2 items. Now since i'm older and against cheating in any way, I really regret what unlocking these things. (this was 5 years ago and still nothing has happened) I wish I could reset my achievements without using SAM, because I feel sorry for hacking them and I just want to earn them honestly.

Furthermore, they are saying "to automate any Subscription Marketplace process." I don't see where Valve describes "Subscription Marketplace" as relating to achievements at all, only the purchase of games or items.
I used sam a long time ago and reverted all my achivements cause imo you feel better after unlocking the achivements yourself.
From what I know poker night 2 doesn't exist anymore so if I ever download this thing I'd only use it to get items that are technically no longer gettable but still exist in the game like the big kill or the stock knife reskin

The only time I used SAM was to unlock the 14 multiplayer achievements of Arkham origins ,since the servers were shut down . The 2 nd and last time was to unlock “Professor Portal” in portal 2, since I could not find any new players playing coop and my friends either don’t have game or already played portal coop.
My greatest shame is joining a sever and just accepting the servers terms by pressing 1 , gave me near all current tf2 achievements back in 2015, I didnt know it would do that, I just wanted to play with a freind who was mod on that server... i still feel dirty
i mean considering how horribly broken some achievement triggers are i think getting them at all for the sake of completion is ok (i loaded an alt, fresh new separate account, fired 1 pipe, and... got the mil blast damage achievement .-.)

Yes unless it's for BS achievements (like the one that gives the Black Rose, since the game is or was basically malware)
Edit: I totally agree that you shouldn't use SAM for, say, the CZcams views achievements, but I think that the Black Rose should be a special exception (specifically because the associated game is dangerous)

I recently played a new game of sons of the forest. Where you have to survive 50 days. I survived 50 days but no acievement. Bugged? Each day is about 35 minutes so total is almost 30 hours. I deserve this achievement
I also have a similar situation where i was playing half life 2 and there is this achievement where is easy to get but for some reason it didnt gave me the achievement so i use SAM to unlock it

When I was a brand new player I was on a TF2 item server and got the item achievements, it was by complete accident, and I was super pissed that the server bamboozled me as a new player. I'm glad I never used SAM though.

Hey, I have a problem I just wonder if there’s a quick fix or there isn’t so one time when I had a free to play account I went to one of those servers got a bunch of items but they were too many and I couldn’t get them if there’s someway to re-do it and still get those items can you please tell me
Honestly like a year ago I used one of those achievement servers thinking oh it's probably just gonna give me some random weapon drops maybe a hat or two, nope I was wrong, I was pretty scared but Valve really has not done anything to me, I think mostly because I had no idea it would lead to that
If a Developer releases a game, with 20 supposed achievements, but 3 of them are broken and WON'T unlock after legit achieving them, then the Developer has cheated the consumer. So the consumer using SAM to get those achievements that are rightfully theirs, is NOT a cheater. He/she completed the task to legit unlock the achievement, but the game didn't give it to them. SAM then becomes an aid to the consumer, not a cheat.
This is the only legit time that I can think of where using SAM is NOT cheating. Because once again, the player DID properly complete the task, but didn't receive the earned achievement.
I used it for one achievement that I didn't unlock because I guess my internet went down or something, and that is one of the chapter completion related achievements in FFXIII. I didn't even realized I didn't get it until I beat the game and saw one missing.
I feel so dumb I saw the giveitems command in the chat and didn't know what it was, and then it gave me the milestone items, and the 2 top hats, am I ok
Just dont run 3rd party software with the game open
so, i can use SAM for achievements in offline games or games while im not getting a advantage?
I accidently deleted my HHH head on my account, can I use SAM to undo the achievement so when I get the achievement again, I get the head again??
Unfortunately not. The only way to get it back is to contact Steam support. They're usually pretty good at returning items you accidentally deleted!
well hey, i tried to use SAM to lock and unlock an achievement because it was supposed to give me a taunt in tf2, and before i did it but my inventory got wiped for some reason and i had to start over again which is stupid, and it didnt work. whyyyy
i just want dangersque too is it still unloackable with SAM?

Done it a few times. Some games were enough fun that re-unlocking the achievements was also fun.

I remember using it years ago when I was f2p. I wanted to get the black rose but the game you had to play to earn it, didn’t allow me to play it in my region
The Tron Run/r game apparently had its servers taken down 3 years ago.
2 achievements (out of the games 20) were tied that leaderboard-related stuff.
I'm one of those 'Achievement hunter'_ + _'Want to see their achievement page full' guys, so I used SAM only on the 2 unachievable ones, then did the rest legit. :-]
I didn't use SAM to get achievements but I downloaded it to get rid of achievements but when I tried to use it, it only added even more achievements...

Question: what if one of the achievement servers had all the tf2 maps *including holidays maps and all of the campaigns like the doomsday rocket?
i downloaded SAM so i could get the Frontline Field Recorder, and i thought “eh might as well” and just unlocked all the achievements then and there because at that point i was in possession of every other achievement TF2 item
Is there a legit way to delete achiements? And if i delete them, will my completion rate finally reset? Because i aready uninstall some games, but the achieménts are still there!
i like how i looked up how to set up sam to remove an achievement from my user, as i dont want to friend my friends and them being like "wait why did you play that" and then i get this as the second result
