    Lo (Wail)
    Among Kurmanji Kurds of Khorasan, "lo" is a very popular and famous song with various forms.
    Although "lo" is an independent Avaz, also called 'Magham' ( improvised rhythmic-free singing) dating back to old times, whatever is sung in rhythmic-free modes in Kurmanji music resembles the mood one can feel when listening to "lo", which is comprised of lengthy motifs of lamentation, mourning, and sorrow.

    So Dutars don't use the Dastgah system?

    • @ArdalanHamann
      @ArdalanHamann Před 5 lety +4

      What you called Dastgah System, better known as "Radif", is a 200-year-old Iranian repertoire comprised of some central motifs, famous melodies, etc. forming a set of sequential musical movements and categorizing different musical modes and tunes. What you hear in this video is a folklore piece belonging to a much broader realm of musical treasury rooted in ancient Persia from which Radif and other contemporary musical mindsets were originated. One may be able to justify the presence of this and many other folklore melodies with in a certain Dastgah yet historically speaking Radif and its Dastgahs were inspired by folklore musics and not the other way around.

      @@ArdalanHamann so the modes (Dastgah) come from old perhaps ancient melodies or songs? So basically there are some songs that are similar in emotion and intervals and they are made into a mode? Thanks for informing me. I am a complete stranger to this. I have a HUUUGE interest in Persian music and every day I want to learn more so I can create Persian or Persian inspired music on Persian instruments. Thanks.

      @@ArdalanHamann Because the word Maqam is in the title of the video I though of the Arabic or Turkish Maqam/Makam system.

      @@liamp1379 Thanks for your considerate observation. That term, Magham, is used interchangeably in different cultures of music. It is rather vague and it only refers to the motifs developed and established in different modes. Thus one can say the Radif is nothing but a series of Maghams. The best way to interpret Magham in standard musical concept is to consider it as mode oriented motifs connected to deep cultural heritages such as fables, myths, legends, epics, etc. This means that whatever you hear from classical and folklore musics of these regions can be called Magham which frankly does not have any accurate western counterpart to be compared with.

      @@liamp1379 The short answers to all of your questions are yes, and I am flattered as a Persian musician by this passion of yours so count on me in answering your questions. However, it is worth mentioning that these emotions and intervals are often so sophisticated and perhaps unique that their musical expressions may occur to our world as mix of rich melancholy and ceremonial happiness or anger and worships and so many other mixed feelings. Therefore, although most probably the form (or what you called as intervals) and context (or what you called as emotions) of these melodies derived their categorizations, they are now perceived by modern and post-modern humans as a package of profound emotions guided and dominated by some certain sound frequencies that vary by each Magham. Additionally, in different eras these Maghams had their very own applications and/or occasions in sociopolitical scales.
