Western Maryland Scenic 734: Going Out in Style!

- With Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's main locomotive, 2-8-0 734 going down for its 15 yr inspection and a major overhaul at the beginning of 2016, it was only fitting to catch her in action one last time before the long wait for her return. Me and two of my good friends went down to catch the former LS&I steamer on its second to last week of revenue excursions. We chased the train between Cumberland and Frostburg, MD, catching them in some well known and some different shots along the line. Also included is footage of wying the engine in Carpendale, WV, and the nighttime North Pole Express trains. Enjoy this last look from SJRailroaderVideos of WMSR 734 in action on the former Western Maryland mainline!

i love that whistle.
This whistle is awesome! Much better than that 3 chime it had for years
That was awesome coverage!!
great catches and video of this railroads steamer on its final runs before it bowler inspection
on these polar express runs

Loving that whistle!!! SP 6-Chime it sounds like.
Unless it was changed, the whistle is an original WM piece from one of their I-2 Decapods. And yes, it sounds fantastic! (no matter what it is from).
@@henryszubielski8601 that whistle yo my knowledge hasn't been on 734 since 2011. It was on the locomotive from 1993-1995, and then generally she wore a Hancock 3 chime and various other whistles. This was an SP 6 chime. She wore that the later half of her last year in service.
It was was an IC 3 chime it used to wear
@@PittsburghAndLakeErie9405 it wore am IC 3 chime at one point, but per a former crew member who rebuild the engine in the 90s, the famous one in the early 90s was an I2 whistle
One of my favorite whistles, has a great tone
Great Footage!
I love the train horn
As 734 pulls the 9 car consist excursion, GP30 no. 501 is a helper behind her, she will have her 1472 day rebuild
Awesome video!!!
its so close but 1309 is almost here so don't be sad we get even bigger steam
Nice video!
Nice job I never got to see this locomotive but I hope to get 1309
I bet it would sound good with NKP 765's whistle

Personally, it always drove me nuts to see a diesel behind a steam engine. I know for a face that 2-8-0 will pull 10 passenger cars without to much of a struggle.
+NewBoston Truck 1 Your right,, a bit of a bummer. I know when the UP Challenger makes a run a diesel unit is required for shunt braking. I think it also provides electricity for the passenger cars. Many scenic railways sure get by without them. Must be a regulation thing.
the reason why the 734 needed a diesel is because of the stiff grade going up to Frostburg. That is why the WMSRR acquired 1309 (so they dont have to add helpers to get the train to Frostburg). The WMSRR doesn't like 734 needing helpers because it adds costs, plus it didn't help that 734 supposedly had a flue fail the day before by what I heard.
Ikr, it sucks, the reason is to just add braking and power to the cars, the railroads only other option is to buy a boxcar and put generators in it to power the passenger cars, they are called power cars
I think it's more of a requirement if the steam locomotive doesn't have modern safety equipment installed. I know the 844 does and I think that's why she runs by herself.
On one of our chases this past year Set met a former worker from Western Maryland When they original started running 734 they had no problems getting the train up to frostburg. but as they grew bigger they started adding more coaches and like here Sister at 18 at the canyon, 734 had problems the past few years. Which is why they chose 1309. I guess 734 needed a good overhaul at the end.
nice whstle action too
That SP 6 chime tho 😳😳😩😩😩
AWESOME Video!!!!!!!! So sad she's officially out of service now. :( :( :(
Yeah... But soon it's going to be 1309 instead!
+Rob Kersey dont worry it will be rebuilt and returned soon enough, npk 765 is very close to her 15 being up next april, but we are hurrying and doing half the boiler work now and half next year to stay ahead of it so it will not be out of commission for long, but thats ok, when its time for a rebuilt for me it will likely be time to learn as I plan to just be in the shop I dont have the time to travel on the road though I would love to do that on excursion, there is just not enough days off on my work schedual to do that. beside my specialty is doing woodwork of what I do know of building I learned working with wood watching my dad since age 6, welding on the other hand I started to try to learn at age 34 and know the theory but my welds are like tomato worms lots of the time.
WolfRaider and 734 will return to steam after 1309 is done
Nice!
What camera did you use for the filming of this video?
In 1994 there were a lot more foliage in that area at the beginning of this vid
There's a different whistle on 734 on the run.
also this one, great video and even better sound. turned my headphones way down... coal tender on the Loco seems to be empty? ( sorry, for the comment. on the turntable i can see there IS coal in the bunker) what are they heating with? fuel oil? in some parts there is so much black smoke. are they doing is special for the filming or to impress the - steam -- enthusiasts?
Sadly due to 734s poor mechanical and boiler condition, she's been retired indefinitely. Due to the increase in ridership since 1993, trains have gotten longer and heavier which made the 734 underpowered and slow. Not to mention she hasn't been given the proper maintenance to stay in perfect working order.
With 1309s overhaul coming along smoothly, she will be WMSR's replacement flagship engine with the capability to meet the demands that 734 just can't fulfill. With that said, I'm glad 734 put in 22 years of service and earned her place in preservation history.
In a Trains Article with John Gardner a few months back he stated he wanted to restore the 734 5 years after the return of 1309.
Baltic 144 productions k think your just over thinking it and this isn't the end for 734 becuase there are plans for 734 to run again once 1309 is complete in the next few weeks or month and once its late fall or early 2020 work begins to restore the 2-8-0 back to service so if we can give them at least 2 to 3 years or 5 734 will be back in service in no time
At this rate, I don't think she will have a fire in her belly anymore, she has been siting behind the shops since her flu time expired and is rusting away.
Is the WMSR hauling freight now? I visited the railroad's website and noticed it has a freight services tab and published freight and fuel surcharge tariffs. It would be interesting to see actual revenue freight moving on the line with modern freight cars instead of those photo freight excursions.
What day did you catch this?
The diesel engine is like EMD GP30 series. Am I right??
Such a far cry from the days when the Alco diesels ran the line amiright?
What whistle is that? Sounds a lot like a Southern Pacific 6 chime.
amtk415w they used all types of whistles on her
It is a sp 6 chime lol
At least the railroad has plans to return her once 1309 of done. Which isn't far from now.
It's now unknown. They were supposed to give an update the other about what will happen. Her condition is currently poor mechanically.
@@chendersonrailproductions704 ik, I saw their recent post online on 734's status
How long should the rebuild and the 15-year inspection take?
roughly 4 years
It hasn't been touched yet due to the 1309 project running longer then thought. With the amount of work the 734 has to have it will be a while before she returns.
Never
Is the 734 line reconditioned and ready to roll
No, still sitting on the back burner rusting away..
They are getting 1309 fixed first sadly
How long will she be out of service for? Or is her lifetime over?
She will be back in maybe 2020
Long forecast is 10 years, but they hope to have her up and running sooner than that.. With all her clanking and all the steam escaping in various places around the cylinders, her bearings are all probably needing replaced as well as the seals. She hardly ever climbs without a diesel in tow. She's a tired loco, and needs some TLC.
TrainFan365 it will unfortunately be longer than that the 1472 restoration usually takes a minimum of 4-6 years maybe more especially since they aren’t going to start her until 1309 is done but give it time and the mountain thunder will steam again
1309 will replace 734. She ain’t coming back.
21:41 Sp 6 Chime
15 years?! Why that long?
The locomotive won't be out of service that long. A 1,472 rebuild means that every 15 years, a locomotive is inspected and an overhaul is likely. May take a year or two to complete.
Union Pacific 844 should've use WMSR 734's Southern Pacific 6-chime while pulls a "A Royal Farewell to 844" and "Farewell to Steam" excursion trip for the alternate history.
Wait was it going to be scrapped!?!?
ᏟᏓ ᎢᎻᎬ ᏩᎪᎷᎬᎡ no, it won't, it has to have it's 1472 day inspection soon,
Oh come on, #734 can go faster than that. It looks like its crawling along the line.
They are only aloud to go 25mph with her and there diesels
Your photography is nicely done on the approach. But too much lead time. You calim to be presenting the locomotive. There is more time devoted to watching the undercarriage os passenger cars than of the working mechanisms of the locomotive. Why don't you pan the camera to get the locomotive as it goes by. Why not get more of the drive train. The following car are a dine a dozen. The locomotives are the rare elements in your videos. Concentrate on that. About 70% of your screen time is scenic or rail cars. The other 30% is of the locomotive. But you ceratinly have some wonderful shots of the monster chuffing up a storm.
This guy is brutal... ^
Thanks for the input, good thing CZcams allows you to skip through videos, that might be of use for next time! I enjoy the still shot photography the most in this hobby, so I just set up the camera and let it roll. As for screen time, I like the approaching sounds of the steam locomotive, and showing the whole train in my videos, thats how I do things. Thanks again
go buy a pentrex dvd if you like mindless runbys, know what I'm sayin'?
I didn't know Steven Spielberg had a CZcams account. This clown has nothing but criticism but doesn't even have any videos of his own! They're called "train videos" not "Pan the drive train and only follow the engine" videos.
Wow... heated commentary. Canonical to CZcams comments, I suppose.
