Hong Kong public rental housing is ubiquitous, providing homes for more than 40 per cent of the city's 7.5 million residents. They have been built in all 18 of the city’s districts under a systematic effort that started in 1973 with a 10-year housing plan to replace resettlement areas and improve housing policies. Designed to tackle long-standing housing problems, the flats have also caught the eye of one urban researcher for a different reason. Sampson Wong has been studying the beauty of public housing architecture and, in particular, how residents react to and use public spaces. In this episode of #852stories, Wong shares his work examining buildings from the 1970s until the present day, and what they reveal about the city's social relations.

However, unlike in Singapore, it lacks the maintenance and you can see the wear and tear
They are public housing but are managed by individual management teams, very much like the condo management teams in Singapore.
Is this is the best HK public housing can offer, I am laughing my toes off as a Singaporean
@@wtIUpITp1E0wMsydV19c0FUmIXvCU No need to sound cocky.
Wait till your HDB flat gets water damage, and see with your own eyes how maintenance is actually done superficially. And tried complain to town council and MP repeatedly about it but still leaking water 24/7. Everything done in Singapore is just for show.
Building complex with Confusing Access
Marketing : we have maze feature, for people who love getting lost
3:01 "People can improvise ways to use the architecture"
so we are witnessing Kowloon 2.0 in the making
Sounds like some propaganda piece, isn't it?
Loved the video. I was born in HK and lived in SMP for the first ten years of my life until our family emigrated to the United States in 87. It would be fabulous if someone could produce an in depth video featuring the evolution of the different housing estates and their layout and space. It is truly amazing how little space we had in Hong Kong, but everyone managed.
We live in the upper Midwest now and my children have no idea how lucky they are, how much space we have. Thank you again.
It’s a disgrace to hk, a family of seven living in 200 ft, you shameless still glorify it. 😂😂

Singapore, Hong Kong are beautiful countries.
It reminds me of public housing built in Singapore during 60s and 70s 😊
Beauty? Functional, yes, but beauty?
Better than the projects in the USA
Fantastic news - Hong Kong’s housing future will be bright 💓
I gather Singapore was the model state for public housing. As a matter of fact in my state of Sao Paulo in Brazil there was a huge housing project in the 1980s dubbed "Projeto Cingapura" inspired by that country. Though still a far cry to eradicate the favelas (some 40 million living in absolute poverty.)
@@CUMBICA1970 is Singapore spelt and pronounced as Cingapura in Portuguese?
I was in São Paulo, Salvador and Rio in Nov 2009
@@axianskin Yes. Or, at least it used to be. I just learned the spelling has been officially changed to "Singapura" since 2016 (just like from Pequim to Beijing in the late 1980s if I remember correctly.)
Maybe,do an episode in Singapore?
I doubt they will. SCMP is spewing out twisted news on how HK is better than Singapore everyday, even though the stats clearly show HK is sinking economically. Showing Singapore public housing to the world is too bitter a pill to swallow
beauty? thats fuvking sad
i know right, this channel must be slow this week on news
That is SCMP propaganda for you
I rented Public Housing flat when I was young. I have warm memories about and it gave me an affordable start to living in HK.
Right here in Hong Kong, houses can get expensive and small - so we hope that our chief executive John lee can resolve that in his 2024 policy address 💓
They can create jobs by fixing up those projects. But still better than American projects.
