Hey Sam, legitimately how easy is it to pull focus with the pivot, manual vs wireless follow focus? Seems like it doesn’t have a perfect solution on this v1. Did PolarPro tell you much about a second version?

I’ve shot with a shoulder rig for four years and I find that the choice of equipment a highly personal. I have parts from at least ten different brands. Nearly every piece is made by a different company. It’s all about customizing it to make it the most functional for you.
The one thing nearly every company doesn’t think about is putting rubber bumpers on the bottom of the handles. Metal or any other material will get shredded in no time just by setting it down.

I used a lot of rigs in this style early in my career, they can be handy, but over time I've shifted more and more into rig solutions that can hug the camera profile more. using cages or cage extensions that have rosette mounts so I can just attach handle to cage, and using shoulder pads that can be attached right under the the camera's center of gravity. I found that units that keep the camera's weight forward like this one seems to in Sam's shown configuration tend to only help with stability for a short time as I'm doing more work with my arms than letting the camera's weight set on my center of gravity. Granted something like this might be the perfect setup if you're using a camera you can set back further or if you have a big extended v mount battery system you can put on the back over the shoulder rest to better distribute the weight. For run and gun smaller profile shooting on my everyday carry mirrorless I've shifted to a setup that kind of reminds me of a circa 1960's home enthusiast rig, where I'll put a bottom handle on the camera and operate with the weight pressing against my shoulder/chest, something like the mantis pod works very well for a modern version of this kind of setup.

Great review Sam. The only issue I see here however, is that the camera is still very much leaning forward. This puts a lot of strain on your arms. Ideally, camera should be sitting on the shoulder itself, with center of gravity.

I take my fluid head of my tripod and use the handle on my shoulder. It works a treat for quick interviews where setting up a tripod is messy but you know its to long to hand hold.

  • @joyoffilming9500

Great and enthusiastic review which I watched with great interest as I am just about selecting a nice and sturdy shoulder rig for my S1H.
Love the basic idea of the Pivot to pack so small and to be tool free.
On the other side, I completely miss out fully articulating hand grips, and even worse, I believe that the weight distribution of having the camera so far at the front of the rig will quickly fatique your arms. In my opinion, this rig is great for outddor adventure to have a shoulder rig avaibale in any case, but for true documentary or even feature filming with hours of shooting there might be better solutions.

If you think it's what you need for a type of filming you do then it's true for you. Its £800 why is that a problem? Because that's more than I'm willing to pay as an enthusiast and if I was a legit pro there are better options out there. Had it been half that price. Maybe.
