In some areas of art art supplies are the last thing you need to worry about, but in others they're the key to success.
I can't wait to see a new doll customization with the new Derwent Inktense Pencils!!!
This is so eerie! Just last night I was going through my pencils trying to sketch a doll face yelling “I BET MS ATELIER KNOWS WHICH ONES TO USE AHH” and I wake up to this ahh haha amazing.
wow! I love when these things happen to me! it feels like the universe is answering my actual questions))
A similar thing happened to me!!! 😱
Same, im saying : "you should watch this week end : poppenateliers vidéos to See what pencils she uses "
I did exactly what you describe at the beginning of the video "I want to try this...but cheaply..." so I bought a cheap "matte" sealer that made the doll shiny and sticky and had no tooth, and a cheap 72 pack of watercolor pencils and it was a disaster full of broken pencils, wrist cramps and a poor sticky head that color couldn't build any darker pigments on...so I acetoned the whole thing to start over, but you know what... It was stained! Either the pencils leached or I pressed so hard I actually tattooed the vinyl head :( I guess the good news is I was going to do the same face over again, but with better materials. I bought some Mr. Super Clear, and then your Arteza review came out and I bought those pencils with FAR better results. I also recently got a used Derwent INKtense 12 pack from a friend that I am very very excited to try thanks to your video review. This was a fantastic comparison piece, and it will prevent me from buying other not-good pencils.
Other ideas for similar videos:
-different kinds of airbrushes/airbrush paints
-acrylics
-any sealers other than Mr Super Clear you've tried and the result
-best clay/heat form plastic/other compounds to use for accessories
-best materials to use for doll clothes
These are excellent requests, great ideas!
I’ve always wanted to see other sealants than Mr. super clear because it seems pretty universal
Yes to other versions of mr s clear please. We cant get it in the uk without paying about £14 + shipping!
I think the staining had nothing to do with the pencils and everything with the sealant. The sealant is key to success.
I know this was a year ago at least from when I am commenting but for the first doll I customized instead of me using MSC which is very toxic without a respirator so I instead used Duraclear which is a brush on sealant but it works really well for me. Hope this helps for you and or any future people who come across this comment :)
I can help you with one brand name: Stabilo is a german brand and you can pronounce it really hard with a „sch“ and a „t“ at the beginning like in the german words „Stuhl“ or „Stehen“.
Yes! I work in an art shop so these kinds of detailed videos give me so much more info to discuss with my customers!! Doll Re-Painting is becoming so popular!
It’s gotten so popular because there’s more people on the planet.
@@bobnunyabiznz4917lmao no that’s not the reason 😂😂
@@ALT-vz3jn Uhmmmm. Educate yourself on the exponential rate of population, kiddo.
This is an outstanding video, very through review, extremely helpful and interesting. It makes me happy to see it because I see a wonderful lesson but it makes me sad cause I bought my Faber Castell Alber Dureh tin thinking they were the best I could get and now I know they are not... they were the recommended ones from a very good doll customizer and I thought her choice would be the ideal. My money is not wasted because they are good anyway... but now i have that urge to get the Derwent ones, maybe the Arteza... oooh, the art material world is a though one! Thank you for this video, it is a very good job.
Fancylooks now you also know you can sell yours on Ali Express :)))
@@LeelooRedRed Aliexpress? Are you sure Aliexpress is a place where you can sell what you don't need or want?
Dude, like 37 minutes in, & I just realized the Ice King in the background. He legit scared the crap out of me for a second. 😂❄️👑
I've noticed him there also just when I've started editing the video))))
😂 I was looking for The Ice King from Adventure Time... 🤦🏽♀️
@@YaoiAndPockyLover My first thought too 😂Also Snape is the best!
I would love to see more videos like this mixed in with the regular content.
Maybe a comparison test to see which yarns work best for wigs?
A tool comparison to see which blades cut doll hair best for styling short doll wigs?
A sculpting clay comparison might also be interesting.
Somehow this video managed to grab my attention for the whole 39 minutes and it was quite informative. I liked Derwent and Stabilo's performance.
As the avid researcher that I am before making purchases (I like to have the best I can afford, and am extra particular about art supplies, electronics, cooking things, and makeup), this video was a DREAM COME TRUE for me. Thank you SOOOOO so much. Many people have recommendations, but now I had the chance to see different recommendations paired next to each other and decide what I want for my different needs. THANK YOU!
How about testing different kinds of sealers, soft pastels, doll hairs? Also, can you maybe do a step by step video of how to apply a face up that would suite beginners, some tips would be nice too. This playlist is very entertaining yet educational.
Derwent just looks really "real" to me..like she looks extremely real and I freaking love it!
I am thinking a person is to have two to even three different brands, pending on what affect the artist wants. Blending or intense strokes. Great demonstration .. creative love sent your way.
Awesome video! You were quite right when you said that Inktense are playing in another league. They are not watercolour pencils, they are acrylic paint pencils. I guess, it doesn't really matter in doll repaint, but on paper it's a big deal, because you can activate them with water only once. Once they are dry, the colour becomes permanent and wouldn't move even if you add more water.
I love your “quest for truth” when it comes to how art supplies perform. This is so helpful!!
This was fantastic!! My artist daughter was very interested in this comparison!
I'd be interested in seeing you compare soft pastel brands in a similar way! Thanks!!
I'm happy the arteza performed so well because that's the one I bought
Hi. I’m gonna keep coming here until CZcams fixes their mistake. You are a wonderful artist. Don’t give up!
Your channel has inspired me to try doll customizing! I’ve customized one doll so far and my 2nd is currently a work in progress. I love your personality and your dolls/your art, and I just wanted to say you’re awesome! ☺️❤️
I love you for saying that you needed good supplies to draw well!♥️ Most of people especially here on CZcams says that you can draw with everything, but this is not true at all. Using poor quality supplies make you hate drawing because nothing looks as good as you want. You do not have to buy professional but there are plenty of students quality supplies that can be used! Thank you for this video! Maybe more people will try to fall in love with creating things ;)♥️
To be fair, they aren't required...but they do help. =3 You literally CAN draw with anything....do you WANT to draw with eyeliner, coffee, lipstick, charcoal briquettes.....is the real question. Time spent is the real key to success above any supplies on the market...but having nice supplies can make it easier to want to put the time in. I get what you're saying here, but there is literally no 'magical' art supply on the market that will make you the 'amazing artist' you want to be other than practice and drive....both of which you have to bring to the table yourself....but at least they're free~!
@@firegodessreiko I get your point but coffee and other things that are not usually used for drawing is a different matter. This whole thing is more based on psychology. If you draw with coffee bad it is easier to continue to try drawing as you do not feel that everyone can use it for drawing. I was the best example of this thing. I really wanted to paint with watercolors but I only had the cheapest ones and all my paintings were really bad quality and I always said that I cannot use paint or anything similar (I hated every brush existing 😂) This lasted more than 10years. One day I saw beautiful paiting and I tried recreating it. That time I saw the difference in types of paint and I bought myself students quality watercolors (around 10USD) and God I fall in love with painting. Good quality materials helped me to convince myself that I can draw and paint and now I love doing it. Artist can use literary everything to creating art as they trained a lot and know pros and cons of materials but people who just are discovering art world need to have good base to not be discouraged.
Wow!! What an extraordinary video. I love Derwent pencils on doll's customizing. Thanks for sharing dear!!
Love the Marge Simpson doll in the background
A few of the other customizers that I watch use different pencils for different things, for example: Derwent to really lay down saturated base colors, but a harder pencil like Faber-castell to do eyelashes and detail in the lips. Make the traits of the product work for you, I think might be a better idea rather than to be loyal to just one brand expecting it to do it all. I really enjoyed this review! Very interesting to see the results side by side.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU SO SO MUCH!!! I am wanting to try doll customizing so badly and this has been something that has stopped me from trying so far. I am 40, a mom of 2, a wife, and a substitute teacher and it is really hard for me to justify the expense for a hobby that I may not even enjoy, let alone be any good at. I really appreciate this because at least if I take the plunge, I won't be throwing money away on something that I can't even use.
This experiment is so detailed, I truly appreciate it when you do things like this. Thank you!!
This must have been so labor intensive! I can really tell how much you love what you do. Derwent pencils were one of the first pencils I ever bought, but I've never really used them much. That's going to change, right now. I very much appreciated this wonderful video. Thankyou.
I missed watching your videos, your upbeat personality and positivity makes my day! This was very interesting even though I’m not an artist and not in the game of doll customization. I’m happy for you that you found better quality pencils and hopefully it will take less time to customize new dolls because of pencils’ performance and you’ll have some free time to relax!
Thank you! It's hard to find out what materials work for you as an artist and So so many factors like heat/ humidity/ price / style etc all effect the artwork differently I luckily have a nearby shop where I can buy Watercolor pencils individually from different brands so I shall be testing some out for myself soon I suggest that other people unsure of brand/quality try a single pencil in the different brands
The value of this video is incredible! Thank you so much. You are a treasure and your work is an inspiration ❤
I was about to buy some expensive Faber Castell pencils, but after seeing this I’m going to order Stabilo Aquacolor! Thank you, I’ve learned so much today. I can’t wait to get started on my doll.
Thank you for making this video! I've been using the Faber Castel pencils for over a year now and had no idea there were actually better options out there for me to try! 💕 I really enjoyed this type of video and would be happy to see more of them in the future, especially one on pastels! ❤
Thank you soooooo much for taking the time to do this. You're awesome! This video has been the most helpful video I've found.
I started off with cheap colored pencils, and I was wondering how you guys get the lines that dark on the first, and now I know what to look for in pencils
I'm so happy it was useful for you!
Oooooh, interesting. I‘ll get some tea
This is super helpful! I'm starting with doll customizing and did exactly what you told, bought a 12 piece of cheap watercolor pencils and a cheap sealant and it was a total disaster. Sticky shiny head with awful pigmentation. Then I saw Derwent pencils on someone's video (I think it was dollightful's) and bought a pretty decent 24 Derwent pack, bought MSC and the difference was huge! I'm finishing my second doll but I'm super happy I failed and then bought better materials so I'm aware of what I need. This video will help a lot of people who want to start! Thank you so much for your time, help and talent! You're the reason I wanted to try doll customizing. Big hug from Mexico!
Thank you for this video, it really helped me personally in choosing watercolor pencils. Once again I was convinced that my favorite brands since childhood are still at their best and are not losing ground. Stabilo and koh-i-noor.
SOOOO helpful! I've done some doll hair reroots and just purchased my first can of MSC. Was just starting the process of figuring out which pencils to try. Thanks. Love every video you do of course. Love YOU!
I really appreciate this
Supracolor and Derwent it is
I love these kind of comparison videos especially when you did it on the dolls. The results were really informative.
I do find these types of videos very helpful and very much appreciated. As this is not just strictly for doll artists but also for all artists who use watercolour pencils. So I am absolutely interested in seeing more of these videos in the future along with your doll repaints. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you so much for this awesome comparison video! I just returned my Arteza set and ordered a Derwent set!
Thanks so much for this video, I'm just getting into doll customizing and this is SO HELPFUL, you have no idea! 😍💜
I just purchased some individual Derwent inktense pencils for doll customizing a couple days ago, because of how intense they were on a paper test. Colour me excited when I saw you posted this video, actually getting to see the results on a doll face and your feedback on them. What a weird coincidence! Thank you for doing this! Your videos have been so helpful and motivating to get me back into attempting doll customizing
Thank you so much for making this video! It's so so useful to see them all tested like this, I would love to see more art materiaals compared in this way :D :D
Thank you for doing this! I almost made a really bad purchase. I have been wanting to try doll repainting for ages, and I think I am going to try the Stabilo pencils, they are a really modest price and seemed to perform well.
I am so happy to have found this video of comparison because watercolor pencils are expensive and it is great to see which ones are better on dolls. Thank you very much
I was trying to find a decent pencil to use on dolls, then I came across this video. I'm so appreciative that you did this!
I'm so glad you did this because when I start repainting dolls I'll know what to look for👍❤❤. Thankyou 😁😋👌
Марина, спасибо Вам огромное за это видео, за проделанную работу, за помощь в выборе!!! Вы реально экономите нам время и деньги. Спасибо!!!!!!🙏
This video is very satisfying, especially when you were drawing the colors and comparing them side-by-side on paper!! my friend is an artist and now I know what to get her for Christmas
I enjoy watching comparison's. It helps me when trying to decide between buying products and figuring out which is better.
This was such a great video -- really informative and fun to watch. I adore your doll design videos, of course (it's why I subscribed!), but this is a great addition to your content.
Loved this!! Thanks for taking the time to make this comparison.
This video is amazing! It also makes me really happy I went with Derwent watercolor pencils! They were on clearance when I got mine, so it wasn't too expensive and now seeing how they preform, I'm even happier!
I love videos like this! You are an amazing artist and I value your thoughts on quality of art supplies. Keep up the amazing work.
I really like this video! I totally support the idea of doing a different sort of video once a month or so!
This an awesome video! The Derwent brand made it much easier to see how great your doll repaints are!
This video is awesome and very helpful. It shows and give you many options to choose from when looking for pencils for doll customization. Thank you very much! This helps a lot.
Very interesting comparison! I love your doll repaints and I think it would be a complimentary move to show other artistic endeavors as well. Thank you!
So relieved to see this. When I first decided to do doll makeovers I bought Derwent on impulse as it was on sale on amazon then started to worry that I didn't get the best quality as none of the CZcamsrs I watch really use them. so I'm happy to see this. Still haven't had the courage to try face repaint but at least I know when I take the dive I have the right pencils for it. Thank you
I have had problems with the white of the eye. Everything else works for me. It wasn’t until I saw your video that I realized my very pricey pencils were last on the list. I just ordered a set of the ones you use for repaints. Thank you so much for your honest and instructional videos. I have always painted but I have learned much from you. God bless!!
Fantastic video, so informative and interesting! It would be great if you did more of these for other materials you use in your doll repaints (pastels, sealants, ...), and indeed other investigations/experiments would be really interesting to see. As usual, a pleasure to watch, and thank you for sharing your knowledge and art!
This is the first time I'm watching a 39 minute long youtube video. Thank you so much for the information! This helped me to understand how watercolour pencils work and what to choose! I think I'll go for Derwent after all
Thank you thank you thank you!! Thank you for going through all those tests to find out the best brand of watercolor pencils, so we humble followers don't have to do it ourselves! I actually am about to start trying doll customization, and i didn't know what pencils to use. I heard that Derwent was good, didn't realise how good it was! Good thing i happen to already own a handful of Inktense! Thank you again! ^^
I started watching twin peaks because of how much you love it and I’m in love with agent cooper and how quirky he is ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much! For trying it for us :) We love you and your work!
thank you for helping a beginner costumizer out! i learned a lot from you! now i know which pencils too buy ^^ love you
I love your videos and this one is such a helpful one !! I really wanted to get started on doll repainting and customizing and I didn't know what do choose, so thank you so much ❤️
I use Derwent, but I love to have options and for some reason I found this kind of videos very relaxing😌 like ASMR, thank you for that 😋💕
Wow, it's so neat to see the difference art supplies make for even such an experienced artist! They all look pretty, but the Derwent head looks so vibrant. I was going to order Faber Castell because I'd heard them mentioned a lot but I'm glad I researched first.
This is AWESOME!!!
Would be great to see more videos comparing different brands and products.
It’s super helpful to know what the best products and options are.
So maybe a video on sealants, another one on hair, another one on glues, and one on clay/sculpting mediums, etc.
Magnificent analysis. It has helped me a lot, because I was going to buy the faber castells, but after this analysis, in my opinion, speaking of value for money, the best ones to start with are the stabilo, by far.
When I have verified that I really like this and have practiced a lot, I will take the derwent.
I am watching a lot of your videos during the quarantine. This one was very informative. I just bought some Derwent Inktense!
This is a very nice comparison video! I'm going to share it on Twitter for my artist friends. I don't think any of them do doll customisations, but I think this is really useful for anyone who uses or wants to start using watercolour pencils.
This has made my day thank you so much I love all your repaints x
I found this test absolutely brilliant. It's really helped me. Thanks
Incredibly useful video! Thank you for taking time for testing the pencils! I can definitely see buying the best black and white pencils to get the intense colours with minimal effort and perhaps buying one of the good but less expensive brands to save some money until you can afford the wooden box nirvana. I would also like to see this pencil test done on resin heads as many in the BJD faceup community would find it very helpful, myself included.
I love these types of videos, you could do a video like this with chalk pastels. What ones are best for shading, blushing and highlighting.
Thank you Thank you Thank you! I love this. I bought Fabre Castell pencils and they never preform the way I'd like and I always think "It must be me!".
Turns out they are not the worst but not the best which is why I struggle.
Thak you again! You do a fabulous job testing
I really liked this test! I had no idea how much difference it could make!
Loved this, would love to see more of this 💕💕💕
Thank you for putting all these brands up next to each other! It takes a lot of guess work out for newbies like me!
Thankyou poppen, I’ve always wondered about brands beside Derwent. Those are the easiest to get where I live, so it’s hard to find other brands that don’t cost the earth! I have always bought Derwent and luckily you can buy them single too. Please keep testing supplies. Your honesty is appreciated 😀
Recently got Derwent 'Academy' watercolour pencils since they were a good price and they've been marvelous you could literally do one layer and it would look like multiple it's that good and pigmented
This was the comment I was looking for, trying to decide between Derwent Inktense or Academy
@@Ashimuro do the inktense ones work on dolls? Sorry, I’m new to all this. Are watercolor pencils the only kind of colored pencil that works on dolls?
@@nanelawe9216 I'm finding that the inktense works well, but Faber works even better on my dolls personally, but im fairly new too
@@Ashimuro Thanky
@@nanelawe9216 no prob! Hope your project turns out good!
Thank you so much for this video, it's exactly what I needed!
I am currently in the market for some good quality watercolour pencils and having a difficult time to decide between Caran D'Ache, Faber Castel and Derwent.
I bought some very hard watercolour pencils years ago that don't perform at all, so I got discouraged and thought that watercolour pencils were not for me.
I'm excited to give watercolour pencils another try now, good art supplies really are key! ❤
Yes, please!! Expand your art gallery!! I love your dolls but I want to see what else you can share with us 💖💖
So glad you posted this. I tried to do a repaint a year or so ago and bought the cheapest watercolor pencils and they didn't even transfer the color onto the doll. It's good to know you can buy derwent pencils individually. Maybe I'll start with a few pencils at a time
Loved this!! Thank you so much for the in-depth testing of the different brands! I might go with Stabilo set then supplement with black/white from caran’d ache. Depending on the prices!
A great video. I've been considering trying doll customisation casually but holding off as I wasn't sure if the pencils I have would be suitable - a Derwent Intense set, ironically. I love them for painting onto fabric wet on wet - mostly how I use them - as they can be set without additional medium or coating. Love your work!
Oh this is great!! I'm so glad I only bought a few Albrecht Durer pencils since my old set was looking a bit short. I'm definitely going to buy the Derwent set when I can! I'm blown away by how well they performed.
You should do a soft pastels video comparing how well they do in different situations, eg full skin colour changing. Maybe try out Pan Pastels, Mungyo Pastels (in the yellow box, I see those recommended a lot!) Mungyo Gallery Artists pastels and your Rembrandt pastels. Thank you so much for making this video and going to all the effort of comparing all these. It's SO helpful! Love from Australia!
I like these kinds of videos, it's nice to hear an opinion from a artist what kind of items work the best. 😊
I'm really glad you did this because I've been wanting to get into doll customization. I knew you had some tutorials but didn't know you've done a video for color pencil testing. I purchased some Faber Castel, Arteza and Prisma Premiere water color pencils but after seeing Arteza crumbling may or may not use them. One thing I've been doing is making seperate purchases over time so I'm not breaking my bank account. I also use the water color in other art forms too so they haven't gone to waste! I've also known that you, Hextian and Dollightful do use acrylic yarn so that helps save a lot on doll hair when you can't easily get ahold of it. Mr. Superclear is just one thing like you said is hard to get ahold of.
I love this kind of videos they help a lot so we don´t get frustrated. I really apreciate your work and recomendations. Please continue doing this like this. For example with different kind of sealent. Lots of love
Thank you for this interesting and informative video!❤ I really liked this format of the video. It will be interesting to see sometimes such videos further.
Thank you! my son is a graphic artist and I know what brand to buy for Christmas! Koh I Noor!!! Love your craft x
this was so helpful for someone who is stil new and not very good
im sure the right supplies would make a huge difference
and we got to see you make 4 beautiful dolls too
I'm so glad I found this video. I almost spent a fortune on faber castell pencils thinking that they were the best ones out there since so many doll artists use them! I'll be trying out derwent instead based on what I've seen here and what I can afford.
Thank you very much for this video, it is very useful. Everything is shown and the comparison can be seen right away. You were very accurate and consecutive during the experiment. Thank you once again ❣️♥️😇🙏
So much fun!!!! Love it! Gonna buy some just for fun, thanks for the review!!!
