- Being a DIK is widely considered to be one of the best choice-driven, adult visual novels ever made. In this video essay, I examine how society's historical, pervasive dehumanization of individuals following non-traditional lifestyles is rooted in hatred of the unfamiliar, and how this attitude persists today with continued, growing limitations on sexual freedom and reproductive rights. To (hopefully) counter this behavior, I argue the case that social acceptance of others through cultural normalization is one key factor in attaining (and retaining) rights for marginalized groups to be who they are without fear of persecution. This video essay takes a particular look at the history of the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s & 1970s as an example of how decreased censorship can lead to a more inclusive culture, and this thus leads to my advocation for utilizing adult games (and all adult media) as potential normalization tools to help support and protect the rights of underrepresented communities.

About Being a DIK: Being a DIK is a choice-driven Adult Visual Novel (AVN) with Season 1 & Season 2 available on Steam.
It follows a young man from a low-income family who moves away from his widowed father and his summer love to attend college at Burgmeister & Royce. As he is cast into freshman life and persuaded to join the up-and-coming fraternity Delta Iota Kappa, he'll be exposed to a new world filled with conflicts.

No porn game made me cry as Acting Lessons and BaDiK
You should check out Leap of Faith if you liked these two games. That game takes the emotional rollercoaster to a whole another level. The last chapter will be released in early september. Not worth buying sooner because currently all songs are removed because of copyright stuff.
About BaDIK, i totally agree. While it has quality porn scenes, those are the last things that comes to my mind when i think about the game.

Came to also say Leap of Faith. I played Acting Lessons first, out of the three of these. It was definitely very melodramatic and swung wildly between light-hearted humor, and ...the rest of it.
BaD never made me cry. It's definitely got a lot of heart and good plot hooks, but I think my reaction was partially because I'd also played Leap of Faith before that. DPC definitely improved by leagues when making this game. It's a 10/10.
However. No game I've ever played, in any genre, on any platform, ever, has made me openly weep like Leap of Faith did. The themes in that game are much more... *authentic* than in DPC's games. And while the characters in AL & BaD are memorable and lovable, LoF has Cece. Cece is the best girl in any game, in any reality.
5 months late, but if you haven't played Leap of Faith yet, buy it and play it. And as VaatiVidya would say: "Prepare to Cry".

Exactly. I have played this game for like 400 hours maybe even at this point (with new episodes), and yeah maybe at the very start when i though of it as a porn game i did jerk off like once. But that was the last time. This is no porn game, it has much adult stuff but you don't feel like jerking off to it, these characters are too well written to think about it. I hate visual novels and i hate AVNs, yet BaDIK is easly in my all time top 3 best games i've ever played. Probably nr. 2 spot just after Gran Turismo 2 and before GTA V / or STALKER.
The romance here is amazing, every person has it's own life, own agenda, and that can be said about not only girls but all your friends. Derek is the best buddy i saw in any game. At this level of games i compare them to the best books and movies, and still this is top tier for me. The best part is that there is no trying hard to came out as a great writer on Dr. PinkCake side - his writing is simple, very natural, he doesn't try to paint himself as some kind of high intelectual, and in result we have a piece of art almost devoided of constantly present author's ego. And i think adult stuff is important here becasue it's also an important part of life and it is shown without any patronizing. Just like it really is (apart from armour plot of Tremolo being so popular among girls or girls looking like pornstars). And every "route" is done so well. And the further you get into story the more RPG aspects reveal themselfs. Simple decisions lead to huuuge changes in the plot, and attention to detail is incredible. Humor is often compared to American Pie but for me the key difference is that this isn't cynical. It's very uplifting and inspiring story, where people aren't cardboard cutouts of stereotypes, even if this is what you may think at first glance.
I really think this genre need to go more mainstream. They have so much potential to discuss real world relationship.

The fact a AVN got me actually invested in the story just goes to show that sex should not be seen as this taboo topic but more as a normal thing. I really do like a lot of the points you bring up in the video. I throughly enjoyed Being a DIK and Acting lessons. Some of the most well written stories i've ever read. AND THE MUSIC FUCKING POPS OFF TOO MAN.

I agree with this entirely. I just found this game last week and I was sucked in, spending nearly all my free time playing it. It is astounding how good it is, how much its made me open my eyes to different viewpoints on sexuality and relationships, and such surprises and shocks and emotionally devastating events. Truly a game that is so superb i am not sure if a game greater and more impactful as this is possible.

I had the same intro to these games! House Party to AL to BAD. Now I stay up to date on all the latest releases. In my opinion AVNs are the most interesting art form currently unfolding. They have a uniquely low barrier to entry for creators thanks to tools like Ren'py, DAZ, and HoneySelect. Games like Eternum and Being a DIK are so much more exciting and interesting to me than any new video games or movies. Because almost anyone with a decent PC can make one, we are seeing stories previously resigned to WattPad posts or just scribbles in a notebook actually taking shape and being published. IDK, hard to explain, but its way past porn at this point, I think its a really interesting field.

Great writeup. I think this goes for both the western and Eastern Hentai games as well. We can talk about BADIK in the same way that we can with Full Metal Demon Muramasa. It also has sexual scenes, but sixty hours of story content. Japan's been doing this for years, so I'm glad to see that the west is following their footsteps. I actually play these on my alt-tech channels with full narration. The fans wouldn't stop harping about Jill, so that's the route we are taking in Episode 8.
Another one that I think is promising is City Of Broken Dreamers. It's like this, but more Cyberpunk.

It is not, being a dik is anything thing but a harem game, at least for people who have finished the second season. Despite being able to fuck many female characters. You can only get into a relationship with 1 (in a specific route 2) girls. In a harem game, you can get into relationship all/most of the girls.

Some good "adult" games that i know with actual story: Melody, Sunshine Love (both made by same dev), Lust Epidemic, Treasure of Nadia, The Genesis Order (not my cup of tea but i can see why people like these and all three same dev), City of Broken Dreams and A Town Uncovered for example

Yo, the story of Maya and Jose hit a bit too close home. I was looking for some sort of media to explore such subject. You don't ever fucking see a dilemma such as this, stories are usually overflown with basic heterosexual Romeo and Juliet dramas. Thank you.

Haha, I guess technically House Party was one of the first two "adult" games I really got into, thanks to CZcams. Huniepop would be first, with Markiplier; and House Party would be second, with Achievement Hunter. But those games are really very humor-oriented, with an emphasis on sexual release.
The AVNs I've played recently have all been at least a little deeper than those two games. It's hard to pick a "best" game weighed against Being a DIK because it's actually very robust for a "visual novel". Minigames, collectables, free-roaming, and a morality scale. There aren't any others I've played that bring all that to the table.
The only game that comes close would be Treasure of Nadia, which is ...gigantic for what it is. Not a visual novel by any stretch, it's more like the developer wanted a bunch of sex scenes and then decided to build a game out from there.
College Kings is obviously going to get a lot of comparison to BaD, because they're thematically very similar, and it came out about a year after BaD (on Steam, at least). But based on the content of the game, I'd say it's more like "Diet" Being a DIK. It's good, it's free (Part 1, anyway), and it's got enough to keep you invested beyond the sex stuff.
In the straight "story-with-choices" vein, there are games like Acting Lessons, Lust Theory, FreshWomen, and Leap of Faith. And out of all of those, Leap of Faith *towers* over the others in terms of emotional impact. Much like Acting Lessons, the sex isn't even a focal point, it's more like just part of the story that happens; something that is part of an adult life. In fact, you could take the sex completely out of Leap of Faith and the story itself wouldn't suffer for it. It's that good.
So, if you have *very* limited funds, and were only going to spend money on one of these, I'll put it this way:
For the most "game", get Being a DiK
For the best *story* , get Leap of Faith.
But really you should get them both.

I very much liked the analysis of BaD, but i disagree with your point of Acting Lessons supporting sexual freedom and helping you be comfortable with being with many people since if i remember correctly to get the golden ending you have to evade all sexual interactions with everyone other than the main girl

While I appreciate your thoughts on sex and the portrayal of sexual activity being accepted in the mainstream, what troubles me about that is how generally women are portrayed. Every woman I have dated and been intimate with have all told me basically the same thing. How atrociously and disrespectfully they are treated by men. Ask a woman what she truly wants and I seriously doubt she will reply she wants to be treated like a sex toy. Women are human beings, and are generally much more evolved than the majority of males. Sex for a woman has the potential to change her life. Sex has far more serious consequences for women. And generally, the man keeps pushing her limits. Respect should always be the guide for a man when he initiates sex with a woman. Listen. Empathize. The more a man gives, the more he will receive. Trust and respect should not fall to the floor with the clothes.
Men are portrayed in the same way when it comes to the Japanese Yaoi games. Yaoi or Boy's Love as it is commonly referred to, only features men. It is also the most popular genre of these games for women players. Two games in particular, Taigano No Chi and Drammatical Murder also feature deep storytelling amidst their homoerotic elements. There are also to my knowledge (it is not my favorite genre) otome games in which the woman is the main character and she gets to have her way with the men. Once again, wildly popular with women. An audience that used to be mostly men has now jumped up to about 32% women and growing.
These games aren't about respecting either gender. If they were, they wouldn't be fantasy games. Real sex and intimacy and a game are and should be two different things. A game based on real sex probably wouldn't sell all too well. People want the fantasy and they should be able to have it. I also have to question the kinds of women you've dated. I know for a fact that many of the women I know don't take this stuff seriously. In fact, you can find far worse examples of women being disrespectful and acting like sex objects on Only Fans. I daresay that the women behave more respectfully in these games than on a site like that, where reportedly horrible things have happened.
Ask a woman what she truly wants and you may be surprised. I had one tell me she wanted to have some very controversial things done to her that I cannot mention on this platform and I was revolted. You cannot paint all women or all people rather, under the same brush. Do not think that all the interactions you've had with women are only what exists out there. Trust me sir, I have stories you do not want to hear, which is why I personally took myself out of the dating market and prefer these games to it. To each their own.

I am troubled by many things I see on CZcams. And in the real world. I have never understood why so many seem to be so attracted to the base and disgusting things in this world and completely miss all the joy and beauty. Revenge/vengeance is an empty and cold aphrodisiac.

This game is one of my favorite game but please don't make this political since this is not a political game and the creator of the game DPC did not make this political as well.
