Thanks for an enjoyable video and the memories. I especially enjoyed the footage of Train No. 4 shot at Streator, IL on 0 6-13-93. I was the conductor on that very same Southwest Chief from Kingman to Albuquerque the previous day. The entire consist of that train was as follows: 518, 250, 1514, 1504, 1565, 1229, 39902, 39956, 34090, 34043, 33005, 38008, 32042, 32043 and IC#1. The IC business car carried IC President Ed Moyers and party. The Santa Fe yard job switched out the IC car in Albuquerque where it stayed overnight and left on Train No. 4 the following day...David W.

Great Work as always! This leads me to wonder, did the material handling cars have BUS or MU cables to carry the HEP current back to the coaches? In some cases the coaches are isolated in the center of the train far away from the locomotives. I'd love to hear any firsthand insight anyone has about this. Thanks!

    • @goodeye03

I worked on the Lake Shore Limited in OBS dept...NOt sure what cable supplied the power but the Mail Cars did have them and we had HEP throughout the train even after adding the NYC section in Albany. I worked there from 92-96 and worked the Lake Shore as well as trains 11,12 BOS-WAS that were the Fast mails. Nothing about them was fast...Big consists of 6-9 material cars and, 2 coaches and a cafe/club or Cafe only. The consist leaving Boston would be 2 (sometimes 3) F40's , 3 material cars, baggage car, Sleeper, 3 coaches and a lounge car, 4 material cars on the end that would be dropped in Springfield Ma. The front material cars would produce enough revenue for the train that the PAX tickets were all profit (so I was told). Back then it was a tired old train and a rolling collection of junk from the 50's 60's and 70's..The only newer cars were the cafes and lounges..It wouldn't be until the 20's until Amfleet 2's were used along with viewliner sleepers...Now the consist leaving Boston is 2 P42's a baggage ,2 coaches Amfleet 2's , cafe or lounge...Things have changed..The 90's version was so big at some stations after Albany we had to make 2 different stops at a station to unload and load the train...
      I miss working there.

@@timf2279 Amtrak did fairly well with the mail and express business. The freight railroads got mad when they expanded into the RoadRailers and started going after things that they considered their business and complained. Then David Gunn did away with the whole thing when he became CEO around 2000. As far as I know the MHCs were good for at least 79 mph, but they used them in the Northeast Corridor on the old "Night Owl" which was allowed 110 mph. That's why they had different trucks under them than other freight cars.

Any locomotive engineer will tell you that an GE/Alco will pull harder than its EMD equivalent. The older EMD units loaded faster, but that doesn't equate into tractive effort. Today's GE's, with individually controlled AC motors, continue that tradition. Tonnage ratings and dynamic brake ratings are, without exception, higher for the big AC chuggers than their equivalents at EMD/Cat.

D.J Mattson P42DCs are fuel efficient and have less engine costs to run them for Amtrak. F40PHs were great engines, but if Amtrak had more funding, a rebuild of F40PHs could have been a thing.
