I know, none of you paid attention in grade 10 civics class when they went over the election process. 🙈 Don’t worry, I GOT YOU! What other questions do you have about the election? Let me know and I’ll do my best to answer!

Great video. Funny you mention Gr 10 civics class.... Perhaps the school systems should be teaching about the election process the year before and the year in which a person is of legal age to vote in Canada, so the info will be relevant and fresh in their minds when the time comes. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Yes, very different! It’s interesting watching American media because their election is all over the place. We almost see it more than our own!

I wish I paid attention in school but this video is great! A lot better than sitting in a class for one hour. What else should we learn since you said these are the basics? I registered to vote and will be doing some extensive research before giving my vote away

They "might live in the area they're running in?" So there's nothing requiring the MPs to live where they're representing?

I still get confused about the ballot, okay I'm voting for the MP of my area. But it always seems like there are other people/roles that I need to vote for when my ballot is in hand. Also in Calgary we are supposed to vote for a new City Mayor. Is that on the same ballot or a separate vote?

What does it mean when the Government can call a snap election? I thought elections are every 4 years?

Is Canada right now in a majority or minority party? I also notice your voting and election system is similar to the house of Representatives in the US.

      Minority

And yes it’s similar to the House of Representatives

So you don't like the representative in your riding, of the party you want winning the election. Example you want NDP in office. But want the Liberal in your riding. Or vice-versa. Tough decision

The American and Canadian system are very similar, the USA has the electoral college which means the people of each state vote for their local representatives, each state has a number of seats in the house, who ever wins the most seats wins the state. Each state has two senators so each state is equally represented all across the board. They do not go by the overall popular vote because New York and California would run the country and they're always Democratic run states, this way the fly over states are not left out of the mix. I believe the electoral college is genius, hard to believe the forefathers of the country would have that kind of insight.
