  • Shot at Folkestone Film TV and Comic Con May 2015 held in the Academy, Folkestone on 9th May 2015, sorry about the slight flaw in the order of the edit but hope you enjoy it. My main thought whilst shooting this was that Tom seems to be getting more honest with age.

      @Andrew Dexter ••• I totally agree Andrew. I still haven't had the pleasure to meet this fine gentleman, who I regard (no pun intended) as the best of all the Doctors. I did get the chance to meet and spend one-on-one time back in 1993 with Ray Harryhausen, who co-produced and did the wonderful VFX for THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD. Tom Baker mentions in the video above that his portrayal in this 1973 film (as Prince Koura) was pivotally important to his casting as the Doctor. Ray spoke very highly of Tom as an actor and felt it was the standout performance of the film. This is high praise, indeed as John Philip Law was Sinbad and Robert Shaw played the Oracle in the same movie, not to mention Douglas Wilmer as the Golden Masked Vizier.
      Anyway, I said what you said about Mr. Baker with regards to Mr. Harryhausen years ago and vividly remember my shock and sadness when I heard of Ray's passing on NPR's afternoon radio news show on May 7, 2013. I imagine I shall be just as saddened on that inevitable day in the future when we loose our Doctor. But hopefully, God willing, that day will still be a long way off, bless Tom's soul. He is just as riveting to watch in person here as he ever was in any of his many performances. I now know why we loved him on the program so much... he truly IS the Doctor... on camera and in real life!
      A great scene featuring Tom in SINBAD :

    Tom was brilliant as Captain Rum. He was so wonderfully over the top and a wonderful cameo in the series. Rowan is also brilliant but no one should tell Tom how to act. Tom is Tom and sod anyone who tries to direct otherwise.

      I have to admit.....To. is refreshingly honest and is not afraid to be honest about himself or his imprrfections. I have a lot of respect for anyone who can admit that they have behaved badly at times. I think that is why fellow actors like Louise Jamison and his ex-wife Lalla Ward are willing to work with Tom again and in Louise's case absolutely love and adore Tom so much now and speak highly of him. I just wish he wouldn't put himself down as harshly as he doas sometimes. I have to admit I will miss Tom when he finally leaves us for good. God bless.

    I love Tom and his sense of humour. He seems to enjoy just sitting and hanging out with the fans and sharing his life with them. It seems like he has continued to grow as a person in terms of learning from past mistakes and being open about it. He's not just a British national treasure but an international treasure! I first became aware of Tom Baker watching him on my New York PBS station as Dr. Who. I have seen some of the other doctors and respect all the actors. But when BBC America aired, over the last few weeks, some of Tom's best episodes from Dr. Who...his doctor stole my heart all over again. If BBC America is reading this...please, please, please don't stop airing some more of Tom Baker's Dr. Who episodes!!! They are priceless as is the man. I would love if they could also air some of his other work after he left Dr. Who as well. Very talented and genuine person.

I still have a bent wood hatstand just like that in my hallway, and I have the urge to get out of storage and hang on it again, my very own homemade version of my Doctor Who scarf that I knitted from all the similar colours of wool that I could find, and I used to wear proudly..... to school and in Melbourne going out with my bemused and embarrassed friends, and I would practice my yo yo skills! Seven years wasn't enough for you?!??!
      Most things on TV go sour after they hit 5 years and people don't care when they leave.
      Tom Baker is fortunate enough that he didn't ever sour that much for many Dr. Who fans....
      I don't particularly care for what I've seen of the series itself -- classic or renewed -- but Tom Baker still stood out for me. With its chaotic direction, writing that seems to go all over the place, and questionable production values (horrible special effects in the original series, too many explosions and a lot more violence in the new series), if the lead character/actor didn't grab you, it was game over.
      Again, Tom Baker stood out for me and that's who I remember when people say Dr. Who...
      ... And he really is an interesting chap in real life!

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD Před 6 lety +2

      Actually, you're wrong there, the modern Doctor Who may be loud and frenetic but it's nowhere near as violent as the original Doctor Who sometimes was, especially during the Philip Hinchcliffe era. They've been far more careful about the depiction of violence in the 21st century version. This difference between the series has been discussed on numerous classic series DVDs.

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD Před 6 lety

      "With its chaotic direction, writing that seems to go all over the place, and questionable production values (horrible special effects in the original series" The original Doctor Who was a very low budget series compared to television today. Having said that, the special effects weren't ALWAYS bad - if you want to see a much lower standard in special effects and general production values, you should have watched The Tomorrow People on ITV. That made Doctor Who from the same era look like a movie.

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD Před 6 lety

      Personally, i think Philip Hinchcliffe got it bang on when he said "We had to rely on the story because there was little we could do with the effects. Star Wars in a way was the turning point. Once Star Wars had happened, Doctor Who effectively was out of date from that moment on really, judged by that level of technological expertise."

      I don't think he ever really played the role. Throughout Doctor Who, he was just being himself.Fortunately this sufficed since Tom Baker is such a unique individual. His innate personality fitted the role like a glove.To use an example: when Jeremy Brett played Sherlock Holmes in the 1980's Granada Television Production. Brett immersed himself so deeply in the role that he found it difficult to shake the character at the end of filming.

    So it's interesting -- shortly after his 1981 departure, Baker really scrambled to answer this "which was your favorite" question -- after quite a bit of fumbling, he responded "uhh, uhh, the Frankenstein one" -- but he has really leaned into the franchise in subsequent decades, possibly stemming from Big Finish and/or convention work -- his 2010 interview for Doctor Who Online specifically called out this "you seem more familiar with the series now than you were in the 1980s," and he readily agreed.

    Even from the off of this video Tom is outstanding. I think a Knighthood should be in order for services to Television, a life time of TV and being an exceptional raconteur.

      klgamit Nope that's just an unintentional editing error, thought I'd got the order right but it was shot on a couple of different cameras and the files were a tad hard to sort.

    I know I’m not a Doctor Who enthusiast (sorry) but I am into clue/cluedo and he was actually the actor for Professor Plum for series 3 and out of the all of the casts Professors he’s my favorite. Heck one of the guest stars that played as a victims in the tv series actually called him “Doc” lol

    Not particulary a Dr Who fan but just come across this video and that thing about Blackadder(which i bloody love) was interesting 0.0
    Then again I know Rowan likes things a certain way, and to be fair he does know what he's doing, nothing wrong with passing things on, so im not suprised really, but i didn't think he would be THAT bossy about what other people wanted to do to the point of ignoring them.
    Anyways i thought Tom's character was absolutely fab, loved it and i think it totally worked.
