Absolutely amazing, one for the cycling books in the cycling world and in Eritrea!
I don't know how many times I have watched this clip and I can't get over the ecstatic feeling I get doing so!!! It's almost like living in a beautiful dream! Eritrea as an unapologetic African nation and it's people of indomitable spirit despite the hardships they are faced with everyday, are reflected in the tenacious spirit displayed by this once in a lifetime athlete. Loved the way he was depicted by the British announcer, his incredible ability to describe what is visible to every sports fan is simply unmatched by any play by play personalities around the globe hence kudos to you Sir as you made watching this historic moment extremely fun to witness! Moreover, the sportsmanship displayed by Mr. Vanderpool was immense. I was always proud of who I am as an Eritrean living in Canada 🇨🇦 but this kid by the name Biniam Girmay has even galvanized my identity to soar to a higher ground and for that I will be forever indebted to him. I am not an Eritrean but I couldn't have said it better. The announcer was one in a million, he made me enjoy watching this race. You can hear it in his voice he was happy for Bini. I believe he was the announcer as well when Bini won Gent Wevelgem. Van der Poel sportsmanship is to be applauded. As a black woman who loves to watch cycling I'm proud of this young man. Go Bini. This is amazing when his teammate Pozzo still doing a sprint train for him. I think MVDP has mistake when he attacked last 4Km anyway Bini has now stage win finally.
He was about to use the opportunity when Bini took the wrong turn. But Intermache played very well to recover the lost time and control the breakout. Nice team play throughout the day!! Congratulations to BINIAM GHIRMAY!
I don't think it was a blunder by MVDP. I think VDP realized he didn't have the firepower for a 1 v 1 sprint against Bini so he gave it a go. He would've lost the sprint anyways.
Girmay started the sprint from a long way and MVD rightly followed him but made a mistake when he tried to pass him too early in the sprint. MVD style of sprint is to use explosive power for short distance while Girmay can sprint for a relatively long distance without reducing his power.
Finally History made by thr young Eritrean rider Biniam Girmay...he did everything perfectly.
