    PLEASE READ
    My Advice:
    So when I first started I was like 'I am so creative, and we can do so much stuff with this crappy camera' well that wasn't really the case. Broke af and with a co-director who wasn't that commited I was screwed. So I kept writing. Scripts, stories, everything. I messed around in imovie and other editing soft wares. I went to the scream in the dark film festival and learned so much. I practiced more with my makeup and became really good. All I can say is being creative is hard. It's hard to create a horror film that takes away someone's sense of security.
    So to all my young film makers out there I believe in you. Make mistakes, take risks, go cheap, and dive right in.
    Good luck from Nebraska!
    -Paige

      A camera is nice for a better picture and focus. Also the ability to put it on a tripod and never loss memory (if you have more than one memory card) Phone works just as well.

      Jmit Thanks. Personally I prefer using Adobe Premier. Matter of fact I'm starting a tutorial series next Saturday. I've used them all but I just find Premier to be the best for me. So if you watch my videos and comment or ask questions I can tutor you and before you know it you'll be off and running. Tripods aren't that expensive so you can start cheap and work your way up. You say you have a creative mind, now's the time to prove it. Watch my video "The Making of Calico" and ask me anything. :-P)

    When editing; once you are finished, don't immediately say you are done. Come back and view it again several hours or maybe a day later. You will be able to catch all the flaws, mistakes, and anything else you want to fix.

      Yeah I agree - try not to edit your work as soon as you get back to base. Leave it for a few days - really. I have spent many an hour editing fresh footage and then viewing it a week later and re-editing the whole lot. The main gripe I had was "I am not cutting that shot - it took me ages to do" or "I need five minutes of running water to get the mood". Seriously, unless you are really really good at this - let your fresh footage go off for a while. :¬)

    I'm 15, and I want to make movies as a living (note that I have NO experience, I haven't even started yet), and I think you forgot the most important advice: WATCH MOVIES. All the time. 3 Movies per week, and you don't even have to pick different movies everytime, watch them, rewatch them, study them, take notes, and learn from those movies.
    You're welcome. :)

    • @ptrso1
      @ptrso1 Před 10 lety +58

      Instead of watching 3 movies a week, you should go out and shoot movies. There are so many who just sits on their asses and watches movies and tutorials and think they are learning so much from them. Yes, you do learn a little, but the best thing to do if you want to make movies is to make movies!! You will see what worked and what didn't, learn by your mistakes. That's the number one advice

      Peter Solnør Hmmm yeah I agree...

    • @nictheartist
      @nictheartist Před 10 lety +4

      I agree, but it also helps to learn how things are done. I worked with some film students once, and no-one in the team seemed to have any idea how to do a scene where someone gets beaten up that looks remotely convincing. Because so much is done by clever angles and clever editing, just watching something doesn't always teach you that. But you are right that you can see what to do and - equally importantly - what NOT to do - by watching loads of films. And lots of different genres, so you can get an idea what you prefer to make yourself.

      I'm 15 as well, I have barely started and it is stressful. When I watch behind the scenes things of some movies i get all stressed because what i'm seeing is looks very complicated and though i'm pretty sure i will learn it, it just stresses me out. But you need to keep going, don't give up, and yes watching movies do help, making them also help, it just depends on what type of learner you are.

    I've been editing and producing videos ever since I was 8 years old. The best advice I can give to anyone starting out is that you should take it one step at a time. When I first started out I used little moving stick figures as animation, some crappy PC mic, and the old Windows Movie Maker XP. However as time went on I masted those programs and moved up to the newer version of movie maker, a slightly better mic, and a nicer camera. Once I mastered them I moved to a headset, Power Director, and a professional camera. Today I work in adobe after effects, own a professional quality mic with a pop filter, and have the equipment I need to make anything happen.
    The idea is this. Don't rush and waste your money on stuff that you will have no idea how to use. There is a learning curve and it takes time to master each step of this industry. I self taught myself everything I know about video editing. I've done it through observation, watching tutorials, and using my imagination to come up with some of the coolest effects I've ever seen. You can do alot with programs like power director. It just depends on if you have mastered it or not.
    Also another piece of advice. Stick with it. Video editing is an art that you have to master. At first it will take forever to make a 3 minute video, and when that 3 minute video receives a ton of dislikes and hate it will kill you inside. To think that you just spent hours on a video, only for it to get disliked and tossed aside hurts. I know because I've been there multiple times. But take the criticism and work with it. Modify where modifications need to be made. Learn and become better the next time. There will always be haters, however if you can push through, eventually the people who enjoy your videos will outweigh those who don't. Also, you get better at this as time goes on, and things will flow much quicker once you know what your doing. Good luck. Keep at it. Best wishes. - AJ

    im 15 and have just started really getting into the process. Ive only been making videos for the past year. Anyways, heres my advice you can have the best editing, the best cinemotography, the best sound quality and the best actors, and your film can still be shit if you dont have good writing. Make sure your script is what you want it to be before starting your project

    I'm 17 and have been doing filming and editing for about 2 and a half years or so and I've learned is that nothing is more important than he other. Everything kind of compliments each other in its own way. Whether it be good shots, great editing, good audio or even good writing, no matter what it is it somehow works with everything else. But I have to say, work with what you've got. I'm the President of my film class and we have 14 awesome DSLR's with tripods and a few pretty decent mic's as well as 12 Mac's with about every Adobe program. We are always collaborating with the advanced Theatre class and we help each other. But one thing my teacher always told us was that the class wasn't always like that, he always stressed to us that one of the most important things is making the best with what you've got. He said one of the first years he was teaching the classes, they went to a state film festival with pretty old equipment and were up against other schools with expensive and fancy...

    • @jacobherrera7975
      @jacobherrera7975 Před 8 lety +1

      ... Equipment. His students at the time were intimidated by them but he told them that they could make just as good stuff as those rich schools. And out of three different categories they got 1st in 2 and 2nd in the third. So don't beat yourself up because you don't have fancy equipment, but use what you have and make it work, because if you do, one day you'll have that fancy equipment and will be able to make amazing things happen! Good luck to all the other young filmmakers out there! And if you're a more experienced filmmaker can you give me some tips since I'm going to college next school year?

    I'm a student filmmaker at Asbury University in Kentucky, and if I could partake one piece of advice that has forever molded my view of filmmaking its this:
    Good people make good films and in order to be a good filmmaker you must know yourself. The more you know about yourself the better filmmaker you will become. In the words of Andrei Tarkovsky, "Cinema is a very difficult and serious art. It requires sacrificing of yourself. You should belong to it, it shouldn’t belong to you. Cinema uses your life, not vice versa."
    Let this be encouraging! The first step to being a great filmmaker is to be yourself, and seek truth!

    I just want to say thank you for all your advice it truly means a lot. I'm a freshman this year and I've been introduced to many new clubs and I've recently join in the arts devision. I was in the musical this year and I loved the environment and all the new people I met!! , but when the musical ended I was sad because I realized I didn't want to leave the environment. I got so used to all the long practice hours and it became like a second home. I decided to audition for the one act play but sadly didn't make it. My theatre teacher knew how much the arts meant for me and told me to join in the film making festival. At first I just joined for the fun of it and to be with friends I had met in the musical, but after making my first short film.. I feel in love with making films with the filming, the writing, and the editing. I am only 13 years old, and also want to become somewhat of a filmmaker myself. I really don't expect myself to get really far and to be successful, such as Freddie Wong or people like that. I just want to slowly work my way up to make my videos look better. Right now I only use WLMM and Sony Vegas, as well as a cheap mic and Photoshop. I mostly make stop motions, (LEGO) but am starting to make short films. (I already uploaded two.) And even though I am relatively new to making films, (I have been doing it for about 3 years, most of my work isn't posted on CZcams), I do very much agree that you have to take it slow and to worry about making your films better, not worrying about how much views it gets, or who will see it. Anyway, great video Indy, and thanks for the advice!

      there are multiple sources for finding actors that you might find helpful such as the community theater in your town or near your town, craigslist, facebook groups (tons of these exist), and local high schools. These are places I tend too look and have success with, also put an add out on your facebook, most likely one of your friends will know someone that either has a friend that is an actor or has a friend that is an actor themselves.

    I have been in the movie making business for 3 years. I use a Galaxy SIII, and Sony Vegas Pro. But, I don't consider myself a pro. My advice is, watch as many tutorials and study as much as possible. This adds to my experience, and allows me to take on more tasks in the future. Also, don't dwell on yourself if you don't get the spotlight the first time. Just keep pushing forward. Never leave your dreams, because if you do, it will have a far worse effect than you think. There are millions of people out there who are famous, and started out just like me, and you. Besides, just like Russel Hasenauer said, "Once youve done anything at all, even the slightest special effects test, you are a filmmaker. So let your dreams and creativity take flight. Good luck, my friend! (:

I'm taking my first film class at a uni (I'm 17, still pretty young) and am using stop motion for a few of my projects. I think if I were you I would stick to that, its a medium that not a lot of people use, and if you get really good at it then you could be really successful. It would be awesome to someday make films like Fantastic mr Fox or Robot chicken type work.

      ***** the lego movie isn't a stop motion. I watched in a behind the scenes of it that showed that it was all 3d animated on computer. One technique i created (it may of been used before by others but it came to me one day myself) involved stop motion. Do your stop motion on a properly lit Green/blue screen and then put that stop motion video on the green/blue screen keyed out on top of live footage and then you get a nice live action look by using stop motion!

I would think that people skills, body language, and the ability to see the story come together before it's finished are all very important. You get a lame job. So you can have time to make films. Examples...
      Tarantino working at a video rental. PTA at a quiz show, Coppola filmed porn, Hitchcock put titles for silence films.
      What they all have in common?
      They wanted to make movies no matter what.
      You can't expect great feedback from lame effort. Plus, is not the same history for every filmmaker. Make your own way to movies.

      Film school is just rules. You can learn the craft with books and practicing. But if you feel like you need someone to teach you, then go to film school. (Which is a pretty mediocre thing to do in my oppinion). All you get there is rules and films as homework. Filmmaking is an art. You should be professional, yes. But be artistic after all. Love films. Don't do them like if there where just another job. Make em your life.

I was told if you go to a random school and get random training it will be harder to get a job than say if you went to NYU. Over christmas break my life plan was essentially attacked by my relatives who thought I should get a "real job and major" that I should spend more time on than my actual dream job and major because they think that I'll have to do sexual favors to make it, won't be able to make it because film makers and production companies close ranks and don't let people in their networks easily, or end up becoming as a peer said, Patty McBurgerFlipper.

      Well you had a $150,000 budget and that is a LOT for amateurs. Most of us have to deal with filming with cheap cameras/ whatever locations we can find/ ourselves as actors. Don't take this as an insult, but you are lucky to have rich parents.

    • @BrandonWatson
      @BrandonWatson Před 9 lety

      Javan Fc My parents aren't rich and $150,000 is ULTRA LOW BUDGET for a feature film. There are ways to trim that budget for example, you can barter location fees. I've done that and saved $70,000. I bought my gear instead of renting because I knew I was going to shoot 7 to 10 short films before I moved up to a full length feature film. I go a price from a local production company to shoot a 14 minute short and the price was $30,000. 10 shorts would cost $300,000. Best to spend the money and buy gear and just do it myself. By the way, the cost to color correct a 14 minute short was $5600, or $400 per minute of film. Yes I had a budget of $150,000 but I shot it for far less in the end. There are so many ways to do it it would be a long post but if you send me an email at brandonwatsoncomedy@gmail.com I'll tell you how I did it, and it worked for me. I just got signed to GAA in L.A. www.imdb.com/name/nm5450039/

      Film school is not very educational when it comes to learning about filming, because you probably pretty much already know the stuff you need to know. The only reason why you would go to a film college is so that you can connect with some professionals and work your way up socially. If you already have connections though, and you are a pretty decent filmmaker, you really shouldn't worry about film school IMO.

    I just recently got into film and my first year of doing it I got into my local film fest. It was just three high schools but I was so proud, but I remember all the flaws in my film. It was the nervousness I had for making my first true passion project, and I forgot about fundamental shots that could have added so much more depth. So my advice is this: when filming keep calm and try to take control of your film.

      ShaeButtaProductions Film school is stupid.
      You dont need to go to film school, you learn things from youtube and trust me on this one. I'm just going to be honset too. You wont keep up stop motion
      When I was 8 I was obsessed with stop-motion untill I realised how expencive it can be and quit at 12. That isnt the end though, I got more and more curious about film and discovered indy mogul, I'm 14 and help the drama department at my school making props and BTS

    I have been making films for 4 years with my group of friends (I am 13) and my first year was entirely stop motion. The first film i wrote and directed was a 5 minute nerf battle with the kids in my neighborhood. It took a solid five hours to film and was prettily terrible, but recently I found my old footage and decided to recreate the video with all of my current resources and experience, And it almost looked professional!

    I started out as a writer but then I got really into filmmaking these couple months and felt like it's my 'true calling'. I guess the hardest part to 'get better' is to actually get your story, actors, equipment together and film something. For young filmmakers like me we may be tied up by school or other excuses but we should still squeeze time and do what we love most :) Inspiration comes easy for me but the hardest part is to shape it to a complete and alluring story so like what indy said...DUN RUSH THINGS

    if you're really interested in editing videos or doing special effects you can try working with your high schools news crew if they have one. back when I was in high school I used to help with the live news show, making neat introduction videos, and editing video packages to go along with the live news show. it was great experience and let me see most of the different aspects of the video industry

    I've heard this over and over from fellow filmmakers: The key to getting started is to simply watch tons of movies. I'm an amateur film critic and writer, and watching movies can really give you great insight into how films are made. Also I just love movies!

    When I started skit writing I was making videos with my mom and my one friend and I still am just now I will show my videos to get tips I get lots of good tips from people who have never wanted to make a film/be a filmmaker. Right now me and my friend are making a short film for something to do in the summer but we are trying to be more serious we are getting a story plot a couple more charters and I just got so good editing software for us to use so you should start out just making little videos and share them through your family and then through friends and family and then if you think you have a good set try to making a bigger one with your friends just get more serious and just build up from there.

    I am 11, and I have done many skits on CZcams that are fun little films I enjoyed making. All you need is a creative mind, you need a great idea. That could be anything, it doesn't matter how much days, weeks, months, or years it takes. If you have an idea you think is amazing, great! Keep it, and work on it and you'll soon make it out to the public. If it does great amazing, it doesn't go good and people say why. Work on that, and never give up. Believe in yourself, and good luck!

    Hello all! I am three months away from graduating film school with a bachelors in film. After that I am beginning work on directing my first feature film. This video is very true. Every since I was about 14 I just wanted to be a big time writer/director. I tried throughout high school to make a feature film. I researched cameras, and costs, and tried to get something together. Luckily I got to go to film school straight out and keep trying. While I was here I tried again to make a feature. I tired to use the resources I had and the people to put something together thinking I'd have a better shot at movie school. It didn't happen again. I'm 20 now and it's been six years since I dreamed of my first full-length movie on the big screen. I ended up with 96 youtube videos and six short films at school. And I learned a lot just like they are telling you here. I couldn't be starting on my feature in the real world with a degree had I not practiced all those weekends dreaming of Hollywood and making short videos on bad cameras. If you truly dream this, it can happen. But you have to be willing to put in way more effort and patience than the other 99%. Not like your friends BSing about a movie idea they have but never wrote a word. Keep writing and directing. Also research the jobs that aren't glamorous. No matter your personality or field of interest, there is a job on a film crew for you. Hit me up if you have any questions about film school or producing your first feature. And good luck, we're the next generation of story tellers.

      This comment is very late. I have loved movies ever since I was 7. At that time I didn’t make anything but then my parents took me and my brother to Universal studios. I was 10 and I am in love with film now. My brother thinks I am crazy sometimes because I study it more than school. I just turned 13 and I make short films with my friends. Of course they’re not perfect but they were so fun to make. I don’t have a big cast so it really is just me and my brother sometimes. Though the way to learn is to work with what you have. Ever since I wrote my first full length script I have improved in writing. Ever since I started editing, I have noticed I have improved as well. I love all you guys because we all have something in common. We love film, and we are creative people. So I agree with every single one of you. Just started to write a new movie that will be full length on my channel. If you guys wanna check it out?❤️🙏

    I've noticed that anything, even non-narrative stuff teaches you lessons about a lot of stuff. So going out and making a short with your friends and money doesnt have to be a place to learn, but filming events and editing them to docu-videos or making stuff for a school club that needs a video helps gain knowledge on this type of stuff

    I would recommend going online and learning the basics of exposure. Read an article or watch a video tutorial on shutter speed, aperture and ISO. It might seem confusing at first but you'll get the idea before too long. After that I'd look into shot composition. Learning those things early will make your practice time more effective and set you on the right path. Also, remember that there are no set rules. There are guidelines that work almost all of the time but don't hesitate to get creative and deviate from them. Happy shooting!

    I've been editing, filming, directing, ext.. since i was 9.. I am now coming up on my 15th birthday in almost a month. So good advice is you are NOT just going to become great in one day of practice… I am always watching tutorials going film clubs and making countless little tests in my visual effects programs and also still practicing with the same camera I've had for about a year and a half! The learning never ends and the more and more you practice the better you'll end up!

  • @timsmythfilmsandanimations

    Good video. Since most everyone's first films will be terrible, my own included, I think it is actually okay to jump right in and start film making. Rush it, it's fine, you have to learn one day, might as well be today, and the only way to learn is to do. Now it may not come out so good, but you will have learned something, so hopefully your next, or maybe two or three down the road, will actually start to get better. I found that early on, if one takes too much time planning, the film can just die in the planning stages. I agree to just use whatever equipment you can get your hands on, as it is not the equipment that makes the film, but the person using it. If you can't make a film till you get the perfect camera, you will never do anything. Thanks for the video, good luck everyone, and happy filmmaking.

    I started making short films when I was 14, directed a feature film and won a very prestigious award at the age of 16 and now I'm 18 with a lot of experience. I started out with nothing, nobody to help me, people even laughed at me in school but now, 4 years later, I'm working on much bigger projects with LOADS of contacts in the industry and even a few celebrities! Just because I kept going and meeting people.
    It really is true, if you have the passion to start then keep going, no matter how tough it gets you CAN succeed. Just get out there, start and don't give up :)
