How to Fix a Zipper That's Come Off One Side of the Track

- Don't throw away that backpack, duffel bag, or pair of jeans yet - you can fix that zipper easily! This method would even work if your zipper has popped off both sides of the zipper track.

But you’re still cutting. Try just shoving it back in there first. If that doesn’t work you can open up the slider until it fits and and then squeeze it with pliers to tighten it back up. No cutting required.

I got a little tilted and bent the metal thing sideway while listening to this tutorial. Then I followed the instruction and now I have bag backpack duffel that can pop zippers. My alligator player is now this bag property and I’ll have to watch the hole closely 🎉❤

Wow thank you! This is so easy to understand. I got a pair of jeans for 10 bucks but the zipper broke in the wash. I took them to my local alteration place and they wanted to charge me $30 bucks to fix the zipper!!!! I was like I could just buy a new pair of jeans for that! Not to mention it would take them 2 weeks to be done. This is a life saver thank you 😊

I was skeptical at first, but this was a truly easy and practical method! A tip I'd like to share: I used embroidery thread for the zipper stop. It saved me a little bit on sewing time and I like to think it gives a more secure hold.

What I realized is you don’t even need to cut it! Just grab it with pliers and open up the zipper then attach on to the track then clamp it down!
Won't work on plastic zippers tho

Great video. I just used a safety pin to stop the zip from going past the cut and coming off the runner again though. I remembered my aunt always putting a safety pin through her jeans zippers when they wore out to stop them from coming undone. Love these old school fixes from the days when people couldn't afford to throw away their clothes when they started to wear out. This wisdom needs to be handed down to the new generation ASAP. Too much throwing away and not enough repairing going on these days.

Before you start cutting: try just shoving it back in first. If it got out it can get back in. If it doesn’t fit, pry the slider a little to widen it, put it back in, then squeeze it gently with pliers to tighten it up. No cutting required.
Yes, if you're careful you can definitely try that route! The less you pry on the zipper though, the less weak it'll get. Thanks for sharing your method.

I don't have a sewing kit but I did have scissors, so after frantically googling I found this video and was able to save my backpack, at least until I can get a new one in a few days when I have a day off. Wow! This actually works! I have a large hard shell suitcase that I’ve been unable to fix the zipper and unable to find a replaceable! I’ve taken it to several shops but they don’t have the machinery compatible with my luggage. I got so sad because I LOVE this particular luggage! Thank you! My backpack zipper broke on a camping trip, and this worked like a charm! Something to note, too, is that I was able to use my scissors as make-shift pliers for bending the zipper back into shape.

In my case, the material the zipper teeth were attached to was very narrow, so I couldn't get enough leverage to cut it with the scissors. So I forced a hole through the material with the tip of a kitchen knife and then used that to get the zipper farther down between the scissors. Worked instantly!

My duffle bag had two zippers and one of them I pried too far open, so it broke off after a while and far too often tries.
Thought, that prieing it a little open with a screw driver and then fitting it in would solve the problem but no, it did not.
Your tactic is far more inventful, even though, it damaged the duffle bag a little bit with your cut, it still helped and your tactic is even more practical, as I can just cut the sewed part open again and try it another time just to resew the edge again.
Again my gratitude.

This worked! I just got a motorcycle again and found my jacket had a bad zipper on one of the arms that I totally forgot about. Did exactly as you instructed and it's fixed again, not only that it seems like I got it in the sweet spot because even unzipping it doesn't come off track! Still going to sew it though. Thanks!
