VW T25 T3 Vanagon 2WD to Syncro 4WD Conversion Project - Update

- My first update since the conversion was completed. The van is used daily for almost everything, mainly because I like driving it, but also to stress test it as much as possible. I forgot to mention in the video that the next big job is to fit the under van gearbox and engine protection plus front bash/skid plate. The gearbox/engine protection bars didn't come with the donor so I have managed to source these parts elsewhere, thanks Michael :-)
So...no major problems since it went back on the road other than a few small issues - which I am slowly working my way through sorting, hopefully before a couple of planned long distance trips for 2017.

Valon Jakupaj - Thanks and good luck with your conversion.
Nice work Mark, looking great!!!
Great to see an update on the van Mark and nice to see you the other day. Sorry that we didn't have much time to chat. Keep on with the work and I know exactly what you mean re 'burning out' with them. I have the same problem and have to balance the work on the vans very carefully with family life.
Cheers Michael, yep hard to balance it all but still enjoying it :-)
Thumbs Up .. keep up the good work it's a long process.. I've got mine apart right now and missing it
"more to life than working on vans..." nah! - Looking bloody lovely Mark :)
Yep normal service resumed today working on the interior. Cheers :-)
This is perfection for me. The 4wd, colour, and basic-ness. It looks rugged but not full of camping stuff which I would never use. Great job.😎 Following you now... love the accent too... Korean? 😜
time and money well spent Mark.
Nice demonstration if that sound mat. I gotta get some.
Cheers, yep the Dynamat is good stuff.
Nice job on the van, hope to do similar syncro job to my t4 swb

SCHAWING , NUTS GALORE BRO BIG PROPS

Awesome rig. We rarely see these things in The States.
+firstmusic00 - Thanks
Fantastic job, a lot of work.. Impressive.
Two questions :
Didn't you have any issues with the MOT ?
Must have taken all of your time.. do you even have a wife/family ? Lol
Very nice job, we don't have many if any VW T3's in the US, carpet works pretty good for sound control, is this project to be your daily driver or excursion vehicle
James Kmenta Hi thanks. The van is my daily driver and has stood up to continuous use well.
Been good looking through all your videos mate - cracking van! Wondering what tyre size you had on the Audi S2 wheels? Having just sold my S2 I'm looking to put the same alloys on my syncro - a little homage to my S2 which I do miss. Cheers!
Get back to you in a few days re the tyre sizes, away from home at the moment and can't remember! Cheers👍
@@MarkHalligan No problem mate - thanks!
@@swquinn770 Hi, I fitted 225/70R16 BFG All Terrains on the S2 wheels
@@MarkHalligan Brilliant - thanks mate! I've got 225/75/16 on steels on mine - bit big tbh (but do look good) so was thinking dropping to either 225/70 or 215/70
Yep I've got 75's (Coopers) on mine now with Mercedes alloys, like you say a bit big, but I prefer them tbh.
Nice Job Mark.
Curiosity gets the better of me - If you were to wind the clock back, would you do it again, or just buy a Syncro?
Funny you should ask as I was really only just thinking about that tonight… hard to say really.
On the plus side I now have the beginnings of the van I wanted (RHD Panel Van) along with a Subaru engine conversion. Also having done the conversion work I have there is not an inch of that vehicle that I do not know. It also has to be said I was in the fortunate position of being able to take a few months out of work to get the job done which factored greatly in my decision making.
On the neg side, yes I could have hung on to try to find the RHD Syncro Panel Van that I wanted (crucially free of extensive rot/rust) and bought a van that I would have been more than happy with. I did try to find one for some time but I came across nothing that “fitted the bill”.
Anyway, there came a point where I had to make a choice particularly as a decent donor vehicle eventually became available. I even seriously considered repairing the donor vehicle once I purchased it, particularly as it was a 16 inch version, but it was too far gone and to be honest I would still be welding it up now…
So yeah, I’m happy with what I did, cost wise there was certainly no advantage, and of course in the end it is not something that appeals to the purists, and I understand that perfectly but in the end I built it for me :-)
Cheers
Yes, I think if you have a van as a `keeper` then it must be very fulfilling and satisfying to build your own.
If I had the skills - and space - I would consider it myself. You must be well chuffed :)
Appreciate the considered reply.
