- The MTA said graffiti on subway cars is an expensive problem. But an expert in the history of graffiti in the subway system says it doesn't have to be.

Graffiti never went away, the city has just been cleaning it frequently for years. MTA budget cuts means this is no longer possible for the trains.
Are you kidding? Schumer just gave MTA 6 billion.
@@stache1954 belive it or not, the MTA budget in 2019 was 16.75 billion. In 2021 the MTA had a deficit of roughly 8 billion. They're saving money by skimping on cleaning to try to make up some of it.
No. It's just happening more and more.
Half true, budget and staffing for the MTA and other places reduced cleaning and security meaning whatever is done rocks longer but writers definitely responded to that and fewer people on the street during covid and turned up the volume
@@dylanhom58 wrong. The budget cuts do not mess with cleaning off the graffiti on the trains once they occur. When it is caught, by rule the train operator has to report it and they take the train out of service and to the yard to remove the graffiti. And homelessness, in the 80’s yes history is repeating itself.
The 70s and 80s were good times
Yep 💯
that was always the goal
I’ll admit, the graffiti looks nice but it angers me when people spray paint gang related, vulgar and inappropriate images. Wish that could stop.
Yep, most doesn't seem so, at least I ain't in NYC though, but I think *more and more people are doing graffiti* as more and more let go of following the laws as they continue to make up a neverending amount of laws that forbid *living* at this point. Can't put your arms out, must ride in the lanes with a helmet, can't train your dog to sic, and the whole COVID shit to top it off, as if people weren't *spending the whole day watching TV and alone* beforehand.
I think *most violent crime they'd cover up though, same shit as the census, our main industry is property development* and if they were being honest with population data people would be pissed. Only found it out by measuring the growth areas on google earth, and saw they were far bigger than I thought they would be and what the supposed growth rate and inner-urban development suggests. It's basically a mix of replacing/building up the old city and building the worst fucking future ghettos on the outskirts of town, all done in this style that's like an uglier, sanitised version of Japan.
*Saw what was clearly bullet holes once and couldn't find news about it anywhere* on the internet. Asked around, and met a friend from a different side of town who saw the same circles in glass, and a guy on the internet who said the police basically shrugged him off when there was a shooting on his street.
Sheesh, if only I'd put this much effort into English class... (did you even make it this far?)
I hope graffiti never dies out
Graffiti trains are here to stay
i thought it looked sick. what if mta teamed up with artists to make the paintings legal and to showcase local art?
It's tacky and breeds the culture of degeneracy. Which leads to higher crimes and sense of disorderliness and anarchism. See the 80s and 90s.
yeah I've always disliked that the NYC subway trains (and most subways in america) are just boring silver tubes. Even if they don't want to do some kind of graffiti based style to them they should at least add a livery to the trains.
This would turn alot of the writers away, it being illegal is a huge part of the appeal for them

Graffiti on a train is NOT the problem. - That just tells you how disconnected the MTA is from New York City. Graffiti actually ENHANCES the cultural experience of being a New Yorker riding the train. Graffiti is a form of ART..... it does NOT make people late for work or their other destination(s). You know what does make riding the trains miserable? WORKING WITH AN OLD OUTDATED 100 YEAR OLD OPERATING SYSTEM THAT CAUSES TRAIN DELAYS.... RATS AND TRASH ON THE TRACKS THAT CAUSES FIRES, FUNKY SMELLING DIRTY ASS HOMELESS PEOPLE THAT FUNK UP THE TRAINS... Those annoying Mexican Mariachi players on the 6 line or the Showtime crews in 42nd St. that interrupt your ride when you just want to get to point a to point b quietly....yes THOSE are the things that make riding HELL for New Yorkers. NOT Graffiti. - I am a legit 35 year old born and raised in NEW YORK CITY and Not once was graffiti EVER an issue for me or anyone one else. - No true New Yorker will complain about a train tag up but they WILL complain that a passenger got sick or get mad a disabled person is delaying a MTA bus because they gotta get strapped in.

I respect your point of view. let me enlighten you as to what's going to happen eventually. with the times changing, and money being at the forefront, watch the MTA switch the narrative and start profiting off the 'artwork'... then it will become an issue when artist don't get the credit for their work due to the legalities/circumstances. Transit will somehow arrange a display for tourist attractions, use tagged trains for revenue service, or sell the artwork on clothing, brochures, and other items in the transit store. I bet you the graffiti will stop then.

I’m from Chicago and they don’t have enough police over here to deal with all the violence, while an officer is busy trying to catch a spray painter he could be stopping someone from getting car jacked or robbed at gun point. I’m sure NYC is having the same problem with not enough police officers. Petty crimes shouldn’t be a priority, real crimes should be the priority. @@EdRomero312
I understand and do empathize with your point. I agree, priority must be given to those more dangerous, serious, violent and life threatening crimes/criminals however, what you fail to realize is just what you said, looking at the overall, big picture.
Criminals seldom start out committing major crimes. Instead, they start with small, petty crimes like stealing, vandalism and deception. Things that some people call societal or nuisance crimes. Things like spray painting (tagging) subway cars. If we let these people off the hook now, so to speak, overlooking their crimes because we think they are petty in comparison to more serious, pressing crimes, they grow up and progress into more serious crimes of armed robbery, rape, murder and car jackings, etc. because, they don't think they will get caught. This is why it IS important to go after these criminals now, while they are committing/doing these nuisance and/or societal crimes that do, in fact, cost us millions to correct/repair nationwide.
Hopefully, and statistics have proven this to deter future, more serious crimes. Again, law enforcement must go after ALL criminals however, we do accept and realize that more time, resources and importance must be given to more serious, violent crime/criminals.
