    Every week we get many cars in the shop with diesel particulate problems ( DPF ) so i though id make a super quick video to name the most common faults.
    Its not just the VW / AUDI / SKODA / SEAT Brands that suffer from DPF problems so these tips are universal across all brands.
    For blocked DPF's we offer on car DPF cleaning, for more info click the link at the top.
    WHAT IS A DPF?
    The Diesel Particulate Filter is in the exhaust system of all diesel-powered cars sold new since 2009. It is a vital component that is designed to enable cars to pass increasingly tough emissions legislation. The DPF’s job is to trap the particles and thereby prevent harmful smoke from being pumped into the atmosphere.
    HOW DOES A DPF WORK?
    Like any filter, the DPF will gradually get clogged with the soot that it traps. However, the car is designed to clean it by heating this residue up, turning it to ash and expelling it. This happens about every 300 miles, either when you travel at motorway speed, or because the Engine Control Unit initiates what’s known as regeneration by raising exhaust temperatures artificially.
    WHAT PREVENTS NORMAL DPF REGENERATION?
    The wrong type of engine oil - check your handbook
    A problem with the fuel system or Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) causing excess soot.
    A warning light on the dashboard or a diagnostic trouble code stored in the engine management system.
    Going over the recommended service interval
    If the vehicle uses Eolys™ additive, a low level in the tank can prevent regeneration.
    Low fuel level - generally less than a quarter of a tank - will prevent active regeneration taking place.
    Ignoring engine faults, Wrong or dirty oil and lack of servicing are popular reasons for DPF problems but THE MOST popular reason we see time and time again is running the car low on fuel frequently! The car needs above 1/4 to a 1/3 of a tank of fuel for the DPF system to function properly. No fuel no regeneration - simple!
    If your having problems with your DPF give us a call on 01253 821971 or mail volksworkshop@hotmail.co.uk

    Although not directly connected to this video, but my point highlights the point of why DPF's were introduced to the car..basically to cut down pollution..right?..but we are being told in this video and many others, and also from various Mechanics to get out and boot the car on a regular basis and maybe 15 to 20 mile drive up and down the
    Motorway..thereby doing unnecessary journeys to solve the DPF issues.
    So basically we are putting more pollution out, and defeating the purpose of the DPF theory..its Nuts!!!

      Specifically, its purpose is to reduce the amount of soot getting into the air, and it does at least do that. In terms of health for living things in cities or near major motorways, the soot/similar particulates is one of the worst offenders.
      You are right that you end up putting out some additional CO2 from this, though.

    I have an audi A6 with the 2.0 tdi ultra, the really annoying thing is that when it starts an active regen there is no light to tell you. First time you know is when you switch engine off and the fans are running and you smell the burning soot. There should be a light to let you know so you can let it finish the cycle before switchingengine off, almost like they designed it to fail.

      @@macky4074 If your goal with increased RPM is to increase temperature in DPF, then doing it while standing in neutral will do basically nothing. Engine has to be significantly loaded in order to use more fuel than usual - that will increase DPF temperature and possibly assist in cleaning soot. Basically you have to drive, ideally, uphill. However it still might not do any difference, as active regeneration process adjusts fuel post-injection according to the temperature readings from DPF sensors, trying to hold ~600 °C during the process anyway. You can see those figures in action with VAG DPF application and decide for yourself do the driving style during active regen changes anything (in my car, very minimal or nothing).

  • @teovm

    If the DPF regeneration does not work below a certain fuel level this should be mentioned in the user manual. And with the same level of attention like the oil level. As this is vital for the whole engine system. And this system is a major one. The car will not work if the DPF does not work. It's the same as oil level, coolant level, brake fluid level. This is not a window cleaner fluid or a "blinker fluid".

      @teovm Před 2 lety

      @@songoku7915 No but this requires a 1/3 of the tank. So 15 to 25 litres is a lot. And this is above the reserve. In my car when I'm driving to the reserve I can get another 2-300km for the last third. The system in my car regenerates every ~450km or sooner even if the threshold of soot is not reached. So the manufacturers decided that 450km is enough. Frequently adding 250km over that can lead to a premature damage. A lot of city driving cars that have their DPF's changed at 45 000km filled their tank with ~20l when they reach the reserve. Once a week. What I'm saying is that if the owners have this habit they are not aware of the damage they are enforcing to the system.

      Sounds familiar. For this issue i use a ‘DPF cleaner’ meant to be put in the fuel tank along with a full fill up. This additive should lower the burning temperature of the soot. It is then supposed to be like a ‘1K regen ride’ after which the DPF should have lost a significant part of its soot deposit. I don’t do any measurements, so I can’t check if it is really working. But the warning light never came back since that one time months ago.

    The way in which low fuel causes the diesel particulate filter(DPF)(Soot Trap) to not work, was not explained well. Yes, the part about the DPF cleaning system needing "extra fuel" was there, but if the fuel is there in the fuel tank, it's presumably available to the system. So I'm guessing the car's fuel supply monitoring system is preventing supply of the extra fuel to the DPF because it is trying to save fuel when the fuel tank is less than one quarter. In that case, taking the "old girl" for a run to clean out the DPF would not work. On the other hand, good fuel economy occurs at highway speed, so the system should "know" that, and take it into account.

      @iansrving Před 2 lety +10

      That means that you interrupted an active regeneration. The fans are running to cool down the engine bay. Easy way to tell in TDI's is to pay attention to the idle rpm before you shut it off. If the idle is at 800 like it normally is then it might not be in regen. If it's at 1000 rpms or above then it's definitely in an active regen. The fan running at top speed is also a tell tail sign, although if ambient air temps are low, the fan might not always run. One the most prominent sign is to listen for a hissing noise coming from underneath the car. While in an active regeneration, the DPF is essentially acting as a blast furnace to convert all stored carbon soot into CO2 and water vapor. This fire will create an audible hiss. Lastly, there is a recognizable smell that is produced during regen. It smells a bit like burning rubber. If you can smell that then it's another tell tail sign. As a warning, you should avoid shutting the car off while it is going through this process because of the temperatures involved. During regen, the DPF is already at an extremely high temperature (400-600 degrees Celsius). Shutting down at this temperature can negatively effect the longevity of your turbocharger, catalysts downstream in the exhaust, and the DPF itself. The DPF is made of cordierite which can resist extreme temperature changes to a degree. However, given enough neglect the DPF will crack internally leading to a failure. I have learned from my mistakes while owning a Jetta 2.0 TDI. Everything that this man says in his video is critical to maintaining the health of your DPF as well as what I have said about being able to recognize a regen. Clean air is better for all of us but busting out your wallet to consistently pay for parts is not always good for you. I wish I could say more to you on this subject but my comment has become grossly lengthy. Either way feel free to ask any questions and welcome to the TDI gang.

      It is worth noting that it IS possible for the fan to break too. This happened to me (car was about 10 years old at that point) and the fan just stopped turning off, ever. Leading to the battery dying, being replaced, dying again, and then me just getting it jumpstarted and going straight to the dealer to get it fixed (the first time the battery died, I thought it was just since it was a few years old and it was getting colder out).
      Might be an uncommon issue, but definitely take a serious note if it ever seems to run for like a whole hour after you turn off the car.

    Unfortunately this advice is just not enough. I have a TDI Golf and I take extremely good care of it. Oil is changed with factory VW oil before 10k miles, fuel filter changed with factory filter, and I keep my fuel over one third tank ALWAYS, not only to avoid clogging my fuel pump with dirty diesel gunk and sediment that falls to the bottom, but also to avoid harming my fuel pump. The problem is that any TDI cars still on the road (at least in the USA) were retuned (timing retarded significantly) in order to burn off more NOx and pass local emissions. Not only the EGR valve but also the particulate filter needs to be regularly cleaned on many cars. I already tried the Lucas Diesel fuel additive specially designed for diesels, and also a computer assisted burn and it did not work. In many cases, without retuning the car, the particulate filter has to be flushed.

    My cars DPF was nearly full, it's only covered 8300 miles , one of the exhaust pressure sensors , the one before the DPF was faulty, I'm not mechanical minded can you explain why a faulty sensor would cause the DPF to fill , many thanks

    • @jdawson016
      @jdawson016 Před 3 lety +1

      There are two pressure sensors on a DPF - one before and one after the filter. The cars engine computer (ECU) is able to determine how full the filter is by monitoring the difference in pressure readings between the two sensors... The greater greater the difference in pressure - the more the flow of exhaust is restricted by the soot in the filter. If one sensor isn't reading correctly, the computer doesn't know how full the filter actually is, and it won't initiate a regeneration cycle. This can lead to an overly filled, or clogged filter.

    The regeneration happens every 300 miles it happens without you knowing . I had a guy come to clean my filter on my drive as i had gone over the limit . After it was done we went for a drive with his diagnostic computer plugged in to see what was happening . We went on a motor way and it took 30 miles to complete a regeneration. He told ms the % up and down as i was driving at 70mph in 5th it was coming down but if you break it goes up . The key is to always burn fuel never cruise. Its just a shame that the info he could see on his computer was not on the dash board display of the car . The car actually telling you how complete the the regeneration is . This would stop all problems . He also said if the yellow drive to clean light comes on you have left it to late . If you drive correctly it should never come on .
