Vincent and the Doctor is on my "Will always make you cry"-list, also probably one of my favourite doctor who episodes of all time.
😭 Always gets me when Bill Nighy talks about Vincent while he's there
It gets me, too, and I still well up even when watching snippets of that scene. Having said that, I think Richard Curtis lays on the saccharine a little too much. Van Gogh was unquestionably one of the greatest artists and painters, but was he _really_ "one of the greatest men who ever lived"? I'm sentimental by nature, but even I hear myself thinking "Oh, come on!" when it gets to that bit.
@@ftumschk He was perfectly cast.
@@MovieMagic515 I wouldn't dispute that. However, the "one of the greatest men who ever lived" line is way over the top.
@@ftumschkI think it makes the scene better.
@@MovieMagic515 If he'd said "Not only the greatest painter, but one of the greatest artists who ever lived", it would have been more accurate and no less effective. "One of the greatest MEN who ever lived", though? Much as I admire Van Gogh, he was not in the same league as, say, Isaac Newton or Gandhi.
Honestly think that Vincent and the Doctor is one of the greatest pieces of not just Doctor Who but of Television in general.
Vincent and The Doctor is honestly so ahead of its time. Like the discussion around depression and mental health really wasn't where it is now in 2010, making the episode only more impressive
I never liked the Monster in it but Man is everything else top notch
Vincent And The Doctor is undeniably my favorite episode of Series 5. I actually didn't like this episode at first, it went straight over my head because I had no idea what it was trying to do. But now that my own struggle with depression has gotten harder, I have a newfound appreciation for it
vincent and the doctor is great and makes me emotional, but the ‘i am the doctor’ music in the eleventh hour is incredible
Series 5 was great, always one of my favorites to go back and watch! The Eleventh Hour in particular is fantastic-it has a high level of nostalgia in addition to being a great story
I absolutely adore Series 5. Before the series started, I remember having high expectations that Moffat would pull it out of the bag and deliver a series that fresh yet still tying in heavily to the show's legacy. This series ended up surpassing my expectations and for me, it was the right series at the right time since 2010 was a great year for me. Even though the three main leads (Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill) were complete unknowns to me, they connected with me instantly and are one of my personal favourite Doctor/Companion dynamics. The series was consistently solid with plenty of great stories, Moffat delivering easily the best story arc, plus the 2-part finale worked and proved to be a satisfying conclusion to the series. Even though I hated the newly-introduced multi-coloured Daleks, when compared to how great everything else was, that was only a minor niggle.
My top 10 S5 stories would be:
1. The Eleventh Hour
2. Vincent and the Doctor
3. Amy's Choice
4. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
5. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
6. The Lodger
7. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
8. The Vampires of Venice
9. The Beast Below
10. Victory of the Daleks
Vincent was such a beautiful and moving episode. I think it was also the first time that Amy had to face the fact that time travel couldn't fix everything
I feel like The Vampires of Venice is kind of an outlier for Toby Whithouse's episodes. School Reunion, The God Complex, and Under the Lake/ Before the Flood are awesome imo, so I can forgive him for this one
@@joelmole3157 which one is Lie of the Land?
@@DeathGodRiku The 3rd part of the monk trilogy is Series 10 (Episode 8)
@@joelmole3157 I personally think The Lie of the Land is decent, not bad by any means but definitely not as good as Extremis. Still it doesn't ruin the Monks trilogy at all imo, I think it's still a great 3-parter
Edit- And I can't remember much about A Town Called Mercy so idk, maybe I need to rewatch it
Honestly I think Toby Whithouse's contributions are a bit of a mixed bag. Neil Gaiman, Jamie Mathieson, Paul Cornell, and Stephen Thompson episodes are more constantly good imho.
The Vampires of Venice is good. The actress who played the villain was so spine chilling.
1: Vincent And The Doctor
2: The Eleventh Hour
3: Amy's Choice
4: The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone
5: The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
6: The Lodger
7: The Vampires Of Venice
8: The Beast Below
9: Victory Of The Daleks
10: The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
All in all, its a very consistent series, my 3rd favourite of the revival, and despite the bottom couples' glaring flaws, don't actively hate any of them. It's also, by far, 11's best time on the show, everything just felt so fresh and fascinating, before the stories became one long, convoluted mess.
1:14 Vampires of Venice defines Rory's relationship with the Doctor the way it never is really dealt with again, unfortunately--at least until the Girl Who Waited, but this is in the purest form. Rory calls the Doctor on his BS. And that is a marvelous moment. Matt Smith also has amazing chemistry with the head fish lady, on the order of Tennant with Anthony Head in School Reunion.
Series 5 is probably my favourite series so far, my ranking would have to be:
1. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
2. The Eleventh Hour
3. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
4. Amy’s Choice
5. Vincent and the Doctor
6. The Vampires of Venice
7. The Beast Below
8. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
9. The Lodger
10. Victory of the Daleks
Same! I agree Pandorica opens is the best episode!!!! Also series 5 is the best!! But the lodger should be higher up.
Everyone gives the beast below hate I really like it
Terminal Velocity, in all honesty I love The Beast Below, it’s easily an 8/10 episode for me, it’s just that series 5 is so strong that I couldn’t put it any higher as the rest are some of my all time favourite episodes. I agree that’s it’s criminally underrated though!
@@nocturne8333 People say it's too early in the series. I disagree with that, Amy is summed up to be someone who understands people in thin slices she's very assertive and confident
Terminal Velocity, I personally think it’s the best second adventure for a companion in New Who so far. It’s a great concept and does so much character building for both 11 and Amy whilst telling a beautiful fairytale story. It’s got all of the series 5 themes in the episodes. So, so underrated
10. The Loger (5/10)
9. Victory of the Daleks (5.5/10)
8. The Vampires of Venice (6.5/10)
7. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood (13.5/20)
6. The Beast Below (7.5/10)
5. Amy's Choice (8/10)
4. Vincent and the Doctor (8.5/10)
3. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang (17.5/20)
2. The time of angels/flesh and stone (20/20)
1. The Eleventh Hour (10/10)
@The Reverse Yeah, I loved season 5 as well, but for me it's slightly behind seasons 1 and 4. Pretty nice list as well
On behalf of all brits, thank you for saying “football” 🤣
On behalf of all the Brits we should thank him for saying "series" instead of "season" too! 😁
1. Vincent and the Doctor - Basically just everything you said in your review.
2. The Eleventh Hour - Also what you said in your review pretty much.
3. Amy's Choice - Great concepts, Toby Jones is amazing. Just - yes.
4. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood - Love the characters, love the return of the Silurians, The Doctor is great. Very good.
5. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone - Love it, love it, love it. River helps, Octavian helps, the atmosphere helps. I love it (with the issues you brought up) (also, Amy trying to sleep with the Doctor in the end doesn't help)
6. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang - I actually have some issues with the *flip side* of this. I have bigger issues with *every enemy the Doctor has ever faced is here* and I enjoy The Big Bang.
7. Victory of the Daleks - It's got some issues, but I love it. Also with you on the New Paradigm/Parliament Daleks.
8. The Lodger - It's fluff. But *gooood* fluff.
9. The Vampires of Venice - I get more of this than you do to be honest. I really like it.
10. The Beast Below - I one that I want to watch the least. I still LOVE this though.
This season is honestly hard to rank (except for the top two). Seasons 1, 4, 5, and 10 all fall under the same category for me. There's maybe an episode or two I either don't like or don't want to watch that much. *Only one or two episodes out of a whole season*
I appreciate this channel so much
I note your issues with big bang but that two parter has a special place in my heart for getting me hooked on the show
I love the IDEA of victory of the Daleks but the execution is a bit wonky. I had been waiting for a long time for them to really make the direct comparison between the daleks and the nazis but I just wish it were more streamlined
Your no 1 pick is perfect. I watched it more than 20 times I think and it never fails to leave me sobbing.
10: Vampires in Venice
9: The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood
8: The Lodger
7: Victory of the Daleks
6: The Beast Below
5: The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang
4: Time of the Angels / Flesh and Stone
3: Amy’s Choice
2: The 11th Hour
1: Vincent and the Doctor
another great video of course have a great week
10: Vampires of Venice
9: The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood
8: The Lodger
7: Victory of the Daleks
6: The Beast Below
5: The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang
4: Time of the Angels / Flesh and Stone
3: Amy’s Choice
2: The 11th Hour
1: Vincent and the Doctor
Me personally:
10. Victory of the Daleks
9. Vampires of Venice
8. The Beast Below
7. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
6. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
5. Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
4. The Lodger
3. Amy's Choice
2. The Eleventh Hour
1. Vincent and the Doctor (cliche I know but it really is a masterpiece)
10. Victory of the Daleks
9. The Beast Below
8. Vampires of Venice
7. Amy’s Choice
6. Hungry Earth/cold Blood
5. The Lodger
4. Vincent and the Doctor
3. Pandorica Opens/Big Bang
2. The Eleventh Hour
1. Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
Best series other than Series 3. Only two weak ones in the whole bunch and the top three are some of the all time best.
I think you're being a little tough on "Vampires of Venice" and on the "Big Bang". In the latter case I think Doctor Who sometimes suffers from how do you follow up from a truly excellent first episode in a two parter? I really don't think there's a weak episode in this series though the endings of a couple of them ("Victory of the Daleks", "Cold Blood") are a little flat. There's no question about the excellence of "Vincent and the Doctor", which is a NuWho masterpiece.
That dramatic spiel at the end about the algorithm was hilarious 😂
If only it weren't true.
As popular as doctor who is I'm surprised I can't find as many comprehensive reviews of the season I'm glad I found your channel we on season 7 so
1. Vincent and the Doctor
2. The 11th hour
3. The pandorica opens/ the Big Bang
4. Time of Angels/ flesh and stone
5. Amy’s choice
6. The lodger
7. The beast below
8. The hungry earth/ cold blood
9. Victory of the Daleks
10. Vampires of Venice
Every episode gets 6/10 or above so a really solid series, 1,2 and 3 get a solid 10/10 or 9.5 for 3 and most then getting 8-9/10
From bottom to top
Victory of the daleks
Hungry earth /cold blood
Vampires in venice
The beast below
The lodger
Vincent and the doctor
The elevnth hour
Amy's choice
Pandorica opens/big bang
The time of the angels /flesh and stone
Superb series. Definitely one of the best, but I love most of Moffat era so Interesting to see how it all stacks up in the end. I remember the next series being the best but its been a while so excited to move on!
I feel like I've got a really weird taste in Doctor Who as I don't like episodes that everyone loves like Midnight in series 4 but Cold Blood/The Hungry Earth is one of my favorite stories ever.
I feel you my favorite episodes of all Doctor Who are Sound of Drums and Last of the Time Lords and soooo many ppl dislike those episodes and also John Simm as the master in general (who I love)

Solid arguments for your rankings, but I enjoyed the Big Bang.
I guess I need to rewatch Amy's Choice. I did not enjoy it the first time around, and I have never felt the need to rewatch it. Otherwise I agree with your ranking.
For me:
13- The Lodger
12- The Beast Below
11- Vampires in Venice
10- Victory of the Daleks
9- Cold Blood
8-Hungry Earth
7- The Big Bang

2- The Eleventh hour

The "Some crazy woman blew up my fez"-part made me laugh way harder than it probably should have 😂
My Series 5 Ranking:
1. Vincent and the Doctor
2. The Eleventh Hour
3. Time of Angels / Flesh and Stone
4. Amy's Choice
5. The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang
6. The Lodger
7. The Beast Below
8. Victory of the Daleks
9. Hungry Earth / Cold Blood
10. The Vampires of Venice
I didn't really click with 11 until about halfway through S6 so most of these I had to appreciate going back over time. It's not my favourite series, but it's still pretty good.
1. Vincent and the Doctor
2. Amy's Choice
3. The Beast Below
4. The Eleventh Hour
5. Vampyres in Venice
6. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
7. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
8. Angel's in Time/Flesh and Stone
9. Victory of the Daleks
10. The Lodger
Written & deleted 5 or so comments & in the end I can’t rank series 5, it’s all good to me. I value each ep for different reasons, and can’t rank them against one another. Maybe the best thing about the series is the balance - silly, serious, plot & character development, writing, etc. I have very few complaints. The series contains most of my favorite rewatches and nothing is truly terrible (if you don’t mind dis-logic) Most series have at least one real stinker, this one doesn’t. Funny that it does take some hindsight to work this out.
IMO:
1. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang.
2. The Eleventh Hour.
3. Vincent And The Doctor.
4. Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone.
5. Amy’s Choice.
6. The Lodger.
7. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood.
8. Victory Of The Daleks.
9. The Beast Below.
10. Vampires Of Venice.
lodger is a guilty pleasure for me the 2nd 11 story i saw after vincent so i LOVED this one and i have a theory if it is fun you can enjoy that so it is not a grind to watch
My list! :-)
10. The Lodger
9. Vampires in Venice
8. Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
7. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
6. The Beast Below
5. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
4. The Eleventh hour
3. Amy's Choice
2. Victory of the Daleks
1. Vincent and the Doctor
I love series 5, I understand why some people don't like the canon additions or use of the angels in Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone but honestly it got me more than Blink did. I love the supporting cast and the oh shit moment when they realize the statues don't have two heads like there are so many excellent parts all being juggled really well!! One of my favorite two parters of the entire show. I will say this should have been the last time they brought back the weeping angels bc the Angels Take Manhattan...hoooo boy 😬
10. The beast below
9. Victory of the daleks
8. Vampires of Venice
7. Time of angels / flesh and stone
6. Vincent and the doctor
5. Hungry earth / Cold blood
4. Amy's choice
3. Pandorica opens / The big bang
2. The lodger
1. The eleventh hour
What are your plans when you get caught up to where the series is now?
For me personally my favourite episodes from series 5 ranked worst to best are
1. The eleventh hour (just an awesome start to a series)
2. The pandorica opens/Big Bang
3. Victory of the daleks (majorly underrated)
4. The hungry earth/cold blood 🩸
5. Vampires of Venice
6. The time of angels/ flesh and stone
7. The beast below
8. Vincent and the Doctor
9. The lodger
10. Amy’s choice
5 best episodes of season 5.
5: Vincent and the Doctor.
4: Time of Angles and Flesh and Stone.
3: Pandorica Opens and Big Bang.
2: Amy's Choice.
1: Eleventh Hour.
Hounerable Mention: The Lodger.
Same, except that I would switch the Dalek and the Vampire episodes.
My top 4 would be the same though in a different order;
1 The Angels two-parter
2 The Eleventh Hour
3 Amy's Choice
4 Vincent and the Doctor
Hey Nathaniel! No worries...your fez is over your left shoulder! Vera must have missed it. ;)
1. Vincent and the Doctor
2. Amy's Choice
3. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
4. The Eleventh Hour
5. The Vampires of Venice
6. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
7. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
8. Victory of the Daleks
9. The Lodger
10. The Beast Below
10. Vampires Of Venice
9. The Lodger
8. Victory Of The Daleks
7. The Beast Below
6. Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
5. Pandorica Opens/Big Bang
4. Amy's Choice
3. Vincent & The Doctor
2. Time Of Angels/Flesh & Stone
1. The Eleventh Hour
I agree with your no. 1. Vincent and the Doctor is a beautifully crafted, gorgeously bittersweet and melancholic episode that lets the characters and their emotions take precedence over the plot. It's what a great New Who episode should be.
1. The Eleventh Hour
2. Vincent and the Doctor
3. The Pandorica Opens and The Big Bang
4. Amy's Choice
5. The Lodger
6. The Time Of Angels and Flesh And Stone
7. The Beast Below
8. The Hungry Earth and Cold Blood
9. The Vampires of Venice
10. Victory of the Daleks
I've been trying to articulate how I feel about the Big Bang since you posted your overdue review and it comes down to this: it's a fun episode, but it's also where the rot set in: plenty of things which were ok in the Big Bang started annoying me in the following seasons and one thing I already didn't like in the Big Bang that is Amy being able to bring back the Doctor because *handwaves* that's just how that stupid tear in reality works then lead to Clara being the impossible girl...
You might not like Mystery box, but I hate Macguffin Girl companions and Moffat seems to love them
I agree with u until spots 1and 2 I would reverse them cause to me they are tied for the best episode of the season the tiebreaker for me is Amy being tested to prove what she wants for her life and she picks Roy with is telling about her character cause most other modern companions would have picked the doctor hands down that doesn't mean Vincent and the doctor is a bad episode by all means cause it's a fantastic episode that's why I have it tied for top spot
11.victory of the daleks
10.enemy below
9.hungry earth\cold blood
8.vampires in Venice
7.the lodger
6.Vincent and the doctor
5.christmas carol
4.Amy's choice
3.pandorica opens\big bang
2.time of angles\flesh and stone
1.eleventh hour
7:24 - GASP!!!!!
My Personal Ranking:
1st - The Lodger - Probably the best comedy episode, thanks to Eleven's and Craig's chemistry
2nd - Vincent and the Doctor - The ending… that is all…
3rd - Amy's Choice - The Dream Lord is fun, and the dynamic between the TARDIS team is great too
4th - The Eleventh Hour - A solid introduction to Eleven, if a little too contrived and self-indulgent for me
5th - The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang - Just the right balance of timey-wimeyness and heart
6th - Time of the Angels / Flesh and Stone - Brilliantly atmospheric, even if the Angel's logic starts being tampered with
7th - The Hungry Earth / Cold Blood - Quite a nice change of pace for a more diplomatic episode
8th - The Vampires of Venice - Just kinda meh
9th - Victory of the Daleks - Spitfires in space… probably a worse crime than brightly coloured Daleks
10th - The Beast Below - The episode that triggered my hiatus from Doctor Who for a good few series.
Council of geeks: Worst episode is Vampires of Venice.
Me: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES

I think watching series 5 has led to Matt Smith rubbing off on you with all your hand gestures and energy! (don't get me wrong, I love it, but is funny to switch between this and say your most recent video, where you appear a lore more tired hahaha)
Here's my ranking:
10) Victory of the Daleks
9) The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
8) The Vampires of Venice
7) Amy's Choice
6) The Time of the Angles/Flesh and Stone
5) The Beast Below
4) The Lodger
3) The Hungary Earth/Cold Blood
2) The Eleventh Hour
1) Vincent and the Doctor
10. Victory of the Daleks (I still like it though)
9. The Beast Below
8. Vampires of Venice
7. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
6. Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone
5. The Lodger
4. The Eleventh Hour
3. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
2. Amy's Choice
1. Vincent and the Doctor
As an Englishmen, I’m so glad you called it football and not soccer.
1) Amy's Choice
2) Vincent and the Doctor
3) Eleventh Hour
4) Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
5) Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
6) Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
7) The Beast Below
8) Vampires in Venice
9) The Lodger
10) Victory of the Daleks
I realize big bang is actually quite unpopular. Like a bunch of people I know don't care for it. But its actually one of my favorite
My worst to best:
Vampires of Venice
Victory of the Daleks
Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
The Lodger
The Beast Below
Pandorica Opens/Big Bang
Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone
The Eleventh Hour
Amy's Choice
Vincent and the Doctor
10.Victory of the Daleks
9.Vampires of Venice
8.Beast Below
7.Pandorica Opens/Big Bang
6.Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
5.The Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone
4.Vincent and the Doctor
3.Amy's Choice
2.The Lodger
1.The Eleventh Hour
Huh. My ranking is the exact same, with the exception of The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang is my number 1.
I'm not a huge fan of combining 2 parters for the final season rating if you separate them in reviews. Either way it'll be inconsistent, but if you separate them for reviews I think they should be separate for the season ranking
10. The Lodger
9. The Beast Below
8. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood
7. The victory of the Daleks
6. Amy's Choice
5. The eleventh hour
4. The Pandorica Opens/The Big bang
3. Vampires of Venice
2. Vincent and the Doctor- S4 was dark and this episode should have been replaced with the Unicorn and the Wasp
1. Time of the Angels/Flesh and Stone
Good thing, this outfit suits you a lot better than the fez one anyway!...
Am I the only one who really likes The Beast Below? Probably.
No it's good, but in such a strong series it's hard to stand above the top grade ones.
Nope, love it.
It's not that I dislike the episode, but I'm also not that fond of it. I see The Beast Below as the epitome of meh.
As much hate as Victory of the Daleks gets at the very least it ended the whole”these are the very last Daleks except for no we wanted another Dalek episode so THESE ones are the last ones” by the time they showed up at the end of series 4 I was like come on this again? I love the Daleks I just hated how they always had to take time out of the Dalek episodes to be like “ we survive because of x”
Well, of course rankings are very subjective and vary from one person to another. My favourites here are The Eleventh Hour, then The Big Bang, followed by Vincent and The Lodger. Sorry, I'm not particularly keen on Amy's Choice or The Pandorica Opens. Although The Eleventh Hour is mostly very good, it's let down by the Doctor's silly arrogance at the end, which is left unpunished. A perfect Doctor Who story is very hard to find…
I liked the part in VoV where the Doctor takes the villain to task for not knowing Isabella’s name, but yeah, it is was mostly meh
I read VoV as Vengeance on Varos lmao
You look like the bad guy from Happy series 2

The paradigm Daleks were good in concept, not great in implementation.
The angels scare me, give me a giant ugly beast that just wants snuggles anyday! I think because of their ordinary existence in the world and the soul fact that they move when you’re in the dark!!! Just no.
I don't think victory of the daleks is should be second to last
Football? Oh you mean soccer.
Your outro gets more and more Vaudeville every video.
And yes, Vaudeville has absolutely nothing to do with this, but I just learnt a new word and I wanted to use it.
Best episode of Season 5 is The Crimson Horror.
Hey wait a minute.
Ah yes, that was the worst Matt Smith episode I could think of. Fuck The Crimson Horror!
I actually really loved that one when I first started watching DW, I should rewatch and see if it seems extra bad now that I've seen all NuWho 😅😂
I think we can all agree that the part where Rory leaves the TARDIS because the 11th Doctor said the N word was a little unnecessary
