And Sir, the only reason I didn't find or create a network when I was employed, was because I used to spend my tea breaks and nature calls for extra minutes into my employed work.
This gave me an opportunity to witness the benefits of the other side of the coin where now as a Solopreneur, am even more uncouth with my own employed self to be over productive like I did for mine previous employers. :)

    1) know your customer.
    2) what's the most expensive problem for your customer that you can solve?
    3) request an introduction with prospective customers/people with clear signs associated with your target demographic.
    4) listen about the problem your customer is experiencing. ask why it's a problem.
    5) prepare for a proposal.
think of symptoms associated with bad practices. are those solutions things people are willing to pay for?
who has the most expensive version of that problem?
capture all the emotionally-charged language they use.

Amazing advice, Jonathan - especially the guidance to start building your audience before you take the leap. I am in that phase and it's been really powerful in terms of starting conversations with my target audience that are helping me get clearer on what shape my product will take. Also really smart to maintain an email list where social media platforms are so dynamic and always shifting.

Hi Matt, When people ask me to refer them to someone, I ask them for their top 3 to 5 targeted audience criteria. Doing this also helps me stay on top of who is my targeted audience.

Say I am getting a client a 8 million dollar deal, what’s a reasonably fee to charge them for me doing the leg work? 2% 5% it’s my biggest deal I’ve had a opportunity with and I don’t want to be greedy and mess up future deals.

If you are already running your own company, then you are already doing consulting. You just need to shift the framework/POV around what you offer. Depending on how clients find you, you should already be offering a "consulting package" or consult offer. A free consult phonecall is a great and popular way to have prospects enter your funnel. You can at least under your product page have a consulting offer. Its all about the framing of what you solve for people/biz.'s. @DavySTUN

Hi Jonathan - these are great. I was just wondering, what if the problem is is forecasted? How can you sell that? e.g. if you were focusing on infrastructure for growing brands and you were aiming to highlight the impact of waste as you get bigger. This isnt a present problem, but will become one if they hit there growth targets, at which point the problem is so entangled it becomes difficult to resolve?

    • @LauraBurford
      @LauraBurford Před 3 lety +6

Jonathan, as a consultant myself, I talk frequently about what it takes to start a consulting business. Top things I recommend are forget about the website, business cards, etc and focus on what you want to be known for, what is your audience, and be able to explain how you will help someone. I actually provide a webinar on starting from scratch.

Step 1: Make a list of 20+ ideal clients in your target market
Step 2: Connect with likely buyers at each of those companies
Step 3: Publish content that is useful to those contacts

Hi! Thanks so much for your question. My advice would be to make a list of your ideal international clients and get super clear on the business value you could provide to them. For example, "I help silicon valley blockchain startups increase user adoption."

    • @jonathanstark6921

I would start by making a list of all my trusted contacts (family, friends, colleagues, clients, associates, twitter followers, linkedin network, etc) and ask if they know anyone working at a SV startup. Assuming you get some "Yes" replies, set up some quick calls calls to learn more about the challenges they're facing. The hope is that you'll uncover some pains that they are suffering from that you can alleviate.
