- It is our first time in Austin, TX and we want to see what the hype is about with Texas BBQ! We make a plan to try three of the most popular BBQ joints in town…. But we were so full we only made two! But we had a great taste of true Texas BBQ between Franklin Barbecue (you have seen Aaron Franklin in the Food Network, BBQ Pit Masters and The Chef Show) and Terry Black’s Barbecue. Which one did we like better?
Oh and in between bites of deliciousness, we explore the capital city!

As a native Texan (born and raised) you go to New Orleans for Cajun and creole, you come to Texas for BBQ.
Yes....but It's in the DFW area, or in the Panhandle. Not Austin.
@@Boomer_Sooner I live in Dallas
@@Boomer_Sooner Sooners suck f.O.u.
Being a Austinite who's from La, you DO NOT go to Nola for Cajun food. Creole yes, but you go to central La for Cajun food. Lafayette and surrounding towns and cities.
@@sithil lol facts! The best Cajun food is between lake Charles and Lafayette.
Pro tip, order online….never have to wait in line like that. Might have to wait weeks for the brisket, but if you’re coming from out of town, that’s the best way. You choose the meat, sides, how much of each, pick up date and time and that’s it. Walk up to a special window designated for online orders at your “appointment time”, check in and they cut up your meat that you want sliced because they won’t pre slice anything in case of “no-shows”. Plus that way it’s fresh cut to order. You even have your own parking spot.
Yall guys have fun , thanks for swinging by , 👍🏻
Texas native born and raised. Had a smile on my face the whole time watching y’all eat some good bbq.
im one of the pitmasters at Terry Blacks, thanks for the kind words and im glad you got to enjoy the BBQ, hope you come visit us again!
That Food looks Masterful and Delicious.
@@phillipbrown2318 thank you !❤️
2:40 - "We're out of sliced brisket but we have chopped?" Uhhhh, I will pass. See ya tomorrow.
I was just in Austin visiting my son and he took me to Terry Blacks and oh my it truly was the best bbq I ever had! ❤❤
Terry Blacks you said for BBQ am from New Jersey am going there next week
Jajaja
Terry Black's is some of the best bbq I've ever had. Except my own! The brisket is exceptional and I go at odd hours so no big lines.
@@jpgarces8813 Nice. I'm originally from Austin and visit several times a year. Terry Black's is so worth it. Go at an off hour, not lunch or dinner, and you shouldn't wait as long. Get a tour of their smokers!
We have lived in the Austin area for almost 15 years now. We just discovered Interstellar BBQ, and it was the best we have had yet! Their brisket, pork butt, and sides ( mac and cheese and scalloped potatoes) are all phenomenal!
I keep hearing this and yet to try it. The 2 times I was in the area they were closed cause it was like a Mon or Tues. Then I just go across the street to Stuffed Cajun market, not BBQ but good food
1 million% agree! THE BEST BBQ I’ve ever had was at Interstellar.
They were born from noble pig right. Noble pig was so good
@@sicoby yes! Do you remember the bacon popcorn? Their au jus sandwich was the best!
Yes! Always go by the "Texas Monthly" bbq list. Was in austin last week and hit #5 Leroy and Lewis and #2 Interstellar. They were both amazing but Interstellar was out of this world (pun intended).
Hands down best bbq in Texas is in Central Texas, East of I-35 at German and Czech weddings, family reunions and fund raisers. Franklin learned how to make BBQ in the small town of Taylor then took it to Austin where all the money is. Smart man! Lol!
Happy you enjoyed my home! By the way, that IS a river- the Colorado River. It is damned at a several places, creating the The Highland Lakes chain of lakes, and is called something different between the damns. Lady Bird Lake is the part of the river that runs through downtown.
Texas 😮
Thanks for the travel friends ❤
during the early winter / late fall - those in the "know" head out to Snow's in Lexington. its a nice drive and on your way back, drive through Taylor and stop at the wellspring, Louis Mueller's...
That pitmaster is passionate about his BBQ, Awesome stuff.
The best BBQ in Texas - Thorndale Meat Market, Snow and Black’s
My understanding is the guy who opened black worked at franklens previously and the difference is they use lawry seasoning on their brisket. If you ever come threw again I but I think its only on Sundays and likely not for much longer hitting up Snows about an hour outside of town is likely a worthy destination I believe the pit master is in her 80s and its in the sticks so its kinda that long venture, based on that age no idea how much longer she will continue to be making legendary BBQ or if she is working on ensure it gets passed down as her work ethic is 2nd to none she was doing it solo at one point in time.
The smile on your faces... you guys look so happy to taste BBQ
There is something special about that Texas bbq. Having family in Dallas I’ve had a few gatherings and restaurant experience’s that have been really good! Safe travels friends!
I live vicariously through you two living your best lives! Love you both so much!
Awe thanks Winnie
Recent subscribers to your channel. This was a great video! We love the diversity of your channel.
Us, Texas, loves our cousins, Louisiana. Thanks for posting.
Loved the video. Nothing better than Texas BBQ! Our daughter lives in Austin but I lived in the DFW area for years. Truly, I base all bbq on the brisket. Looking forward to following your trip. We are like you and love to cruise and also RV!
16:15 - Dude at the pit is SELLING it...Nice job kid...
Looked like fabulous BBQ! Great visit!
Very nice video. Really worth watching... I am a big fan of your videos
Next time you are in Houston, visit Corkscrew BarBQue in Spring, Tx. They run out fast so get there early. And if you are in the North Dallas area, go to Hudgens BarBQue in Mc Kinney. Get their burnt ends!
I have to add Austin to my bucket list now for BBQ & the sights. Thank you.
Y'all are making me hungry! Enjoyed the video. I love Tx--
Wow Guys Loved this video! That's the way to get your Q On!!! More of these please.
It is the Colorado river , just dammed up in several places ,called the chain of lakes in central Texas ,great review ,glad you had a great time here !
We drove to Austin in March of 2021, we were bummed that Franklin BBQ had the inside closed and were pickup only. We drove all the way from Boston. Although all the BBQ plates were sold out for the days were were there, me and my buddies went in and were able to get a whole Brisket. We essentially tailgated a Franklin Brisket with nothing but wonder bread and regretted nothing. Had a fun time in Austin.
Thanks for the video. I’m used to seeing you guys on cruises.
That Pitt master was the man dude! Great video! Big inspiration
Welcome to Texas guys! Been following your adventures for a while, mainly for cruise advice. We're way up in Amarillo but glad to have you. We actually just got back from New Orleans eating our way through the French Quarter. Safe Travels!
Headed out on the BEYOND cruise ship 🛳
WOW, that was a lot of food! By your faces I can tell it was delicious!
Blacks BBQ in Lockhart has the most delicious brisket.
Yum what a great vlog on BBQ!!!
Great vid as always! I normally don’t comment but my mouth is watering😳 I bought my first smoker this spring. A pellet one. I have yet to try a brisket I’m kinda scared.especially with prices on beef right now but I love using it from ribs and chicken to all kinds of apps! Way too many bbq you tubers if I’m not watching travel it’s bbq/cooking I usually have to go to fridge and have a shot of bbq sauce😆
Great great bbq food great blog guys
What a great treatment of my city! Terrific video and I think you're right about Franklin versus Terry blacks over there on Barton springs... thanks
Very nice! Congrats
I travel to Austin quite a bit for my job. Most of my employees are in Austin, and they have taken me to quite a few BBQ places. Most, the first impression is "hole in the wall", but looks are deceiving. A lot of good food around town there. My mother made a delicious mustard based potato salad. Wish I had gotten her recipe before she passed.
"above Franklin's?" thems fightin' words!
"Livin in a van, down by the river! " lol
The BBQ looks so good !!!
Black's Dino bone I think is the best BBQ I've ever had...
I live in the Austin area for 25 years. Terry Blacks is my fave. I just tried their new place in Lockhart. Just as good as in their city location. Nice part is you can go for lunch or dinner and they have sliced brisket. Styles Switch my other favorite and they also have brisket to dinner time. Salt Lick is not like it was 20 years ago. They got too big and have to do precooked and reheat on their pit to finish off with their house BBQ sauce. It's unique in their own way. Glad you got to a couple. Micklethwait BBQ is just down the street from Franklin and like them better.
Wauw that BBQ looked. Delish 😋😋😋
It is a river. Lake Austin is just a small impoundment of the Colorado River. If they didn’t turn it into a lake it would be a very sometimes river. During the dry parts of summer it’s not much bigger than a creek but during the wet parts and floods it would be a raging river. So it makes sense to turn it into a lake.
Texas's capitol is 15' taller than the capitol located in DC. The Republic of Texas was it's own sovereign nation for almost 10 years, and as such had embassy's in France and the UK. (plaques at their locations in Paris and London). France was the first european country to recognize the Republic of Texas and The French Legation is the oldest wood building in Austin which is just a couple blocks south of Franklins BBQ, would have been a perfect walk after Franklin's BBQ! Next time you stop by be sure to check it out. And of course the Bob Bullock Texas History museum as well!
Still love my Lexington, NC barbecue!
WOW that barbecue looks good
We sent you a pic when we went to Austin in April stating Jason needed to hit Franklins. So glad you were able to get there!!!!! We hit Salt Lick and Blacks. Loved Franklins best!
Oh wow the BBQ looks quite good and juicy ❤
Great Video!
We did training at our head office in Houston and I always asked the locals where to go for good BBQ. I was never disappointed.
Thank y'all for this tour. I'm a Texas girl, but have only been to Austin twice. And we didn't really get to see and do much then. And that look like a river to me too, from where you all are at. Perhaps there us more to it, and you all missed it somehow.
Now come up and visit Goldie’s south of Ft Worth. Tx Monthly rated them tops in the state. No disappointments. And yes. Beef ribs are the pinnacle of Texas BBQ. It is the best bite of BBQ on the planet.
Great video 😊
Cute hairstyle. Have not seen you guys for a little while. Thank you for the Texas BBQ tour
And Austin.
I love the channel. love the Content. keep up the good work. I Can’t wait to try it Franklins
BBQ looked good!!
That beef rib looked so good, my mouth was watering! Alisa, your hair is really growing in and it looks fabulous!
Her hair is really looking great. Short hair really suits her
That looked so good
Hi Alisa and Jason!
That looked absolutely amazing! 😋
Thank you for taking us along!
Yes, Salt Licks is gooooooooder than! Get the Brisket while you are there and everything else as a second dish, its all good and I still have my salt lick Tshirt from when I went. If you make it up to Dallas, go to Hard 8.
Try Goldee's in Fort Worth on your way back. It's group of youngens that are making waves.
I spy a Tripped travel gear backpack!
You know it’s good barbecue when Jason picks up the white bread to soak up all goodness
Haha that’s true
BBQ + Big Red = 🙌
I love when I can find BBQ and it doesn’t need sauce! I love potato salad but it has to be more mustard based. It’s so hard to find really good BBQ! I’m from NC and you would think we would have some of the best but it’s so hard here in NC to find some really really good BBQ.
Welcome to Austin, now I want bar-b-q, thanks for the great content, we'll done
Greetings from Austin! Sorry y'all missed the brisket at Franklin's. It's really, really good!! That line starts around 6:00 or 7:00 everything morning, and usually people have to be there by 10 to get brisket after they open at 11. Terry Black's is great, also. One of my favorites is Stiles Switch, and their beef ribs are as good as Terry Black's.
Y'all would love the Frio River and Garner State park.
The best place for a meet stuffed potato is Rib Tickler in Tomball Texas. I like Texas Roadhouse for the ribs and rolls. . I have lived in Texas all my life . Congratulations s on becoming grandparents 😎🤠
Barton Springs is a place you missed go back to Austin and try it when it’s 100° out
My cousin lives outside Austin. Last time, I was there she treated me to Blacks. It really was good.
Franklin's is my #1 for a long time now. I don't get it much because of the line, but geez it is so dang consistent.
My #2 is Terry Black's because of the access, bigger location, and great food. My work team always end up at Terry Blacks.
Y'all need to come to Amarillo and try Tyler's BBQ. Jalapeno creamed corn-SO GOOD!
Franklins is alright, but if you want the real deal you've got to go to HEB for that True Texas BBQ.
Lol ya’ll missed the Salt Lick. If you’d headed in there with a cooler of beer, you might still be in Austin. It’s not absolutely the best BBQ, but combine all-you-can-eat with b.y.o.b. and the atmosphere, and you won’t want to leave.
I'd probably eat BBQ sauce on anything. Yummmm!
That looks amazing....viv
Terry blacks it’s my favorite and all the sides are delicious specially the Mac & cheese
Did y'all end up with the meat sweats afterwards? You hit 3 of the best in Austin, but it's Texas. There is always someone on the rise when it comes to BBQ. Thanks for stopping thru!!
Enjoyed seeing, Austin, the Capitol of Texas. The BBQ looked inviting.
Jajaja 😂
Welcome to my home. Sorry you didn’t get the brisket at Franklins as it an Austin delicacy. They call it Town Lake but it is the Colorado river so you were right
Yum 💛
I'M NEW AND YES I SUBSCRIBED. I live in Fort worth Texas
I stopped eating meat a few years ago so I haven't kept up with the pricing and OMG has it gone sky high. Four or five years ago on average a pound of brisket was around $17-$20 and a beef rib was $18-25. Of course prices vary from place to place but I can't imagine how much it will be in the next 5 years. Good video on showing a bit of Austin.
Yall needed to go to Lockhart Texas.. which is next to Austin for good BBQ Texas Monthly hosted BBQ Festival this Month in Lockhart
Franklins hands down is the best brisket you can find in Austin. Outside of that La Barbeque and if you are adventurous take a trip out to Lockhart TX to Snows BBQ - about the only ones that come close to the top.
Austin has so many foodie restaurants…on the way back highlight some of the non bbq ones
Austin guy here. Thanks for coming by and trying the city’s bbq. Personally I hate Terry Blacks brisket. They really went down in quality this last year. Franklins is solid. Salt lick is consistent but not amazing just good bbq. Valentinas is my top pick for beef fajitas and the brisket is pretty dang good too. LA bbq I hear is good but haven’t made it down there yet.
Haven't been to Franklin's. Do not have four hours to wait. Maybe two years since I went to Terry Black's wanna say it was good, but not knock it out of the ballpark as I remember it. No love for Lockhart here. Smitty's hot link in Lockhart is the bomb. A couple of times I also have had their brisket which was really good?
When in a hurry will do Rudy's. They really have gone down hill. Super hit and miss. On a lucky day you might get a good slice of meat. Go there with low expectations. The McDonalds of bbq.
When Mickelwaites had a trailer in East Austin they were really good.
@@thyslop1737 I like smittys but valentinas is my favorite by far. I can’t hate on Rudy’s. It’s good for what it is. Had some friends come in from NY. They thought Rudy’s was the greatest thing they ever had lol. If you’re in the buda area I’d recommend hays county bbq
@@Someonebutnoone10 Poor hayseeds. Rudy's sometimes almost comical.
@@thyslop1737 facts haha
@@Someonebutnoone10 Most often my bbq selections are dictated by time constraints. I have to calculate how much time I can devote to wait. The one time I drove by Franklins and it was perfect. 35 degrees and pouring rain. A line of maybe 20 people. My perfect opportunity to give it a try, alas, I had an appointment. Another missed opportunity.
Hey guys Austinite for 31 years and yes actually it is a river the Colorado river. It is damned up to create lakes. You didn't miss anything by not making it to Salt Lick. You would have been highly disappointed after having Franklin's and Terry Blacks. Safe travels. 🤙🏼
I'm so glad you both finally got to visit my hometown. I miss the food more than the traffic. I'm so glad you both enjoyed Terry Black's. I knew Jason would love the beef rib! I hope next time you visit Austin it will be longer than 24 hours. So many awesome sites to see and of course food to try. Safe travels to California and congratulations with the new grand baby on the way!
Texas is the king of bbq. Every other state can say they're good at one kind of bbq... but texas is best at all bbq.
also post oak is for weird Austinites. Come try mesquite!
Franklin's uses a little more than salt and pepper. :)
The only brisket I’ll wait on that long is mine.
I wish you guys would come to Fort Worth!!
