- Part Three: The Legend Rembered
This is the third and final part of my over 20 minutes long video about the legendary filly Ruffian.
In this part the legendary filly is remembered in interviews, photos and quotes, included are interviews with her trainer Frank Whitely, assistant trainer Mike Bell and jockey Jacinto Vasquez.
Notes for this part:
The editing in the first interview with Frank Whitely isnt ideal. There was footage of Ruffian breaking down in it, with the audio over it. I had to cut around it, so to speak.
I thought the interview with Jacinto Vasquez was a nice way to end this video. I was very moved by what he said and it just sums up the general feeling about Ruffian.
Comments and/or rating are highly appreciated!
Ruffian is my favourite racehorse. Its so sad how she died.I made a book all about her.Watching this almost made me cry.You did a wonderful job,I hope now people realize how amazing Ruffian really was.
She was so gallant and beautiful. What loss of a grand horse going the way she did on the track is heart breaking, as she had such a zest for life . Her soul lives on . You were loved Ruffian 🌠👼🌠🐴
The 3 part video was so sad it was hard to watch through all the tears! What a special girl she was! I think of her every year when the Belmont is run and I see the flagpole knowing she is buried there with her nose point to the finish line! I get a tear in my eyes every year!
This was the most I saw of the my Grand Dad doing what he loved and he love Ruffin when we saw him crying after Ruffin Died it was bitter sweet for Ruffin would not be in pain and now there is water machine to help fix a break like she had. My PaPa was the groom with the hat on and were looking for a son he had named James (Book) Anderson
Durrell Mccall I read about Ruffian in the book “Ruffian Burning From The Start”. Your Grandad loved that horse and so did I. I cried like a baby when she died.
To Ruffian-klacz A nie Ruffian-ogier
Triple Crown Champ. Yes...saw the race with Folish Pleasure....Sooo. Sad! I
That was my Granddady grooming the Ruffin much love PAPA and Ruffin I remeber playin with you in the yard in Carolina with all the grand kids, Great times
I come back and watch this often. She was so beautiful and talented and I'm grateful for this beautiful tribute to her.
She had the most beautiful action of any dirt horse I've ever seen. In my opinion only 2 horses since races have been televised are truly worthy of the expression 'poetry in motion'. On turf it was the legendary Rokeby Stables homebred Mill Reef, on dirt it was this graceful dark bay filly by Reviewer.
What a beautiful tribute to the greatest racing filly ever. I remember so well the day of the fateful race and its tragic outcome. You really captured the love affair with this amazing horse, and the tremendous sadness at her loss.
This video brings me to tears, what an awesome filly, so big, graceful and athletic.
It’s incredible to think that she was never headed at any stage in her entire career of racing.
The saddest horseracing story of all time!!!😔😔😔
Lovely videos of such a phenomenal mare. Can't stop crying.
There will never be another like her. Thru her death a passion in horse racing was instilled in my heart which has lasted with me my whole life taking me far and wide in racing centers around the globe. I was 16 years old when Ruffian died in that match race. She was extraordinary and because of her I have had experiences I could only dream of.. Thank you Ruffian for your brilliance but if you had not died in that match race I would never have known the greatest passion of my life. Rest in peace my beautiful champion...
Yes.... She always, after 33 years break hearts... It can't get any better...
And again, thank you...
The videos you made for Ruffian are awesome. Great work!
Best US filly that I ever saw. Her running times separate her from the many other greats. What an extraordinary trainer
and character Frank Whiteley was. Tough guy who knew his craft.
A beautiful tribute to the greatest filly there ever was!
what a beautiful tribute for the greatest filly ever......Ruffian will always be remembered ....
Awesome videos!! Thank you for this Tribute to "The Queen of the Fillies". She was so beautiful and fast :) Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta are good, but there will never be another Ruffian. I know Ruffian is in heaven, racing the wind with Secretariat, Barbaro and Eight Belles and YES, she is ahead of all of them!
Great job.
I was five when she died. Two older sisters, all three of us were mad for her. My poor parents had a house full of wailing kids.
Thanks for the doc.
terribly sad. Such grace, beauty and intelligence, all in one...
I was too young to see her run but have obviously read and heard about her... can I say your three parter is superbly put together tribute to her... the footage of her running and walking in slow motion is pure equine perfection...
Many thanks.... really enjoyed it.
Thank you for this video it is by far the best thing I have every watched. Beautiful.
One of the best. If not THE besr tributes to the greatest filly ever!!! Thank you for posting.
Ruffian was a Lady who ran for a living. It was proud business and she required all the respect that went with that business. She expected to be treated with respect by all her family of keepers just as any Queen would. She was all Youth, Beauty, and Potential with exquisite Grace mixed in. Like Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday". Sweetly innocent with a spine of stainless steel.
Besutiful music!
Its fascinating to see real footage of her, she seems to have plenty of manners. Its so sad that she died doing what she loved. She was clearly very competative.
She couldn't deal with another horse ahead of her, that's for sure. She had to be in front; no ifs, ands, or buts.
She had great ground manners though. Her trainer and groom said she was easy to handle.
Everyone always says this horse... or that horse... was the greatest. When you look at Ruffian, you are looking at The Greatest. Even Secretariat's trainer said as much in that very popular statement he made about the true Queen of Racing. And no, Zenyatta would never have caught her, and Rachel would not have kept up with her. Ruffian was a sprinter, and a distance horse all wrapped up in a show horse's beautiful body. Such a shame. :'(
Daria: No doubt! The greatest filly/mare of all time. And, for me, behind only Man O' War and Secretariat overall.
Her legacy is somewhat tarnished by the fact that she never beat colts, but no one who saw her race ever forgot her utter dominance. The very definition of a boss mare.
I've watched that horrific match race numerous times, and never once have I doubted that, had she not broken down, she would have pulled farther and farther away from Foolish Pleasure. She was a born winner.
Personal Ensign could keep up with her.

And since July 7, 1975 Ruffian is running in the sky. Regards from a venezuelan citizen who in February 2018 emigrated to Chile searching a better way of life.
@@christopherelmore6710 I doubt that.
That’s funny. Ruffian was never pushed. Never. She was simply “let loose.” No one can keep up with Ruffian.
So sad May she rest in peace 🙏
Such a sad story. Well edited. Thank you for creating it. Ruffian had a heart of a true champion.
Wonderful video. parabuteo78. Have to believe she's the greatest filly of all time on this side of the Atlantic. And again, this is a statement of praise for Ruffian not a criticism of Zenyatta or any other filly/mare. Also believe she would have beaten Foolish Pleasure this day.
I think it was awful that they gave the race to FP. When her leg gave out, she looked like she was 10 lengths ahead of him.
this was nicely done...... thank you
Wow, Fabulous. Well shot, edited, researched and developed.
I was not aware of Reviewer or Shananigan's fate.
Absolutely fantastic job.
I was thrilled you didn't focus on that terrible July day. I hate it when people focus on her breakdown. replaying the tragedy over and over again. I watched it happen on TV. I will never be able to get that scene out of my head. I definitely down need to see it again.
You did a great job of "Remembering the Legend", not focusing on her demise.
Ruffian is the GREATEST PHILLY of all time !
you Can see that when she came out of the starter..that something wasnt right.. inthe way she was moving..why did'nt the jockey pullman her up!! she might of had a chance, ..for sure the leg wouldnt of broken at least,
If you had listened to Jacinto, she fought him got her feet under her and it wasn't until the birds flew up she took a misstep that cost her everything. Even then she was hard to pull up running on a stub.
FANTASTIC set of videos, tastful and informative, factual and inspirational. I witnessed that horrible match race, and have hated match races ever since. I love horse racing, but a straight out speed race between two horses usually doesn't accomplish anything good. I do believe Ruffian was the greatest filly ever and next to Secretariat could have been one heck of a duo. Could you picture their baby... WOW
The way genetics work, a foal out of Ruffian by Secretariat could have been spectacular or a dud. There's a 50-50 chance on inheritance.
A powerhouse body on legs much, much too fragile to support it. That’s what happened to Ruffian - she was a big filly, 17hh, and her legs were far too fine to support her frame. Her knee joints and fetlocks are also too tiny. They would never have been able to hold up under pressure. Ruffian’s right foreleg weakness is visible in almost every non-running photo of her.
As brutal as it is to have to push aside emotion, this is the kind of breeding that should not happen.
@Horsegal143 She ran in the Filly version of the Triple Crown. Her trainer felt that was too early in her career to take on the boys, Elvira237 is correct that the plan had been to take on the boys in the fall.
I pretty much adore Ruffian, this is a really good 3 part tribute to Ruffian!
This is amazing!!!!!! I couldn't stand watching the part of the Match Race where she broke down... I tend to always skip when a horse breaks down... Glad you didn't put it in. But I love this!
Superb Job on the 3 part Ruffian series!
Just finished the book by Jane Schwartz and wanted to view some videos. I really enjoyed your segments, thanks
To me, the greatest Filly ever. Sorry Zenyetta. R.I.P baby girl.
Secretariat vs. Ruffian would be the dream match race but I have the former winning. R.I.P Big Red
can you imagine, even better than the match race is a match made in heaven, what a foal they would have made.....
Their foal could have been a dud as well as a spectacular racehorse. Genetics can work in mysterious ways; they're a crapshoot.
And I don't think the Janneys had a breeding share in Secretariat. He was owned by a syndicate.
so far none of Zennyata's foals have done well on the track and Cos has been gelded, I hope the Medalia d'Oro filly fares better. My point you ask? My point is the Zayat's paid through the nose for Pioneer of the Nile and American Pharoah and Steve Coburn and Perry Martin paid only $2500 to get 2 time horse of the year, so yeah genetics help but so does really training and knowing your horse.
You do realize that Secretariat and Ruffian were related, she was his niece (in human relations) it might have been more problematic line breeding them. Her sire and Secretariat were both by Bold Ruler.
omg i love your videos you did a great job
These Vidoes Were So Beautiful :)
I can't even watch part II right now--I was in high school and remember crying when she died. Seems like I remember her jockey saying he never or rarely used the crop on her and watching part I, if he did use it, I didn't see it.

If this story was accurate, she was raced too much without enough rest between races. Her speed was obvious. Why wasn’t she retired for breeding ? We could have had a descendent with us today. Instead everything is a memory. She was not appreciated enough. She was special like secretariate. He died so suddenly they couldn’t save any DNA. People always say there will never be another as special. There will be more. What’s hard is spotting them and seeing theyget their chance, with good care and training. Racing horses too young at two years old before they are full grown is bad. It’s hard on their bones. Winning money is not everything if you have an exceptional horse. Be cautious and take extra care of them. I felt sorry for her when I watched this memorial to her. Think about all that’s been lost if someday your standing at the rail stunned by the sight of another amazing horse.
You're welcome too... ;-)
I feel the only match race roughing should ever had to run against the Colt to prove she was the best would have been running against Secretariat
Horse racing was a bit different back then. A lot of the races Ruffian ran in were at longer distances; since then the distances have been shortened. More credit to her being that she conquered every one of those distances on the lead. People make the claim that Zenyatta or Rachel Alexandria were the greatest. Different eras of course. But I'd like to think Ruffian was better than those two. I don't think Zenyatta could beat Ruffian on dirt and I don't think Rachel Alexandria would be able to catch and pass Ruffian. IF those two were to run against each other the RA's connections would insist on a 1 1/16 distance. Anything longer than that and forget it; RA would eat Ruffian's dust as Ruffian distanced herself by lengths.
The ONLY knock on Ruffian-by obvious circumstances-is that she only ran in NY-Aqu, Bel, and Sar. AND I seriously doubt Frank Whitely would have shipped her outside of the NY circuit.
The trouble with speculating is that we can only do so by ignoring the fatal error in Ruffian’s makeup - and that’s damaging.
Ruffian was an extreme of the scale; in looks, in physique, in heart - and in matchstick legs. She couldn’t be as good as we all claim she should be - hypothetically beating other legend racehorses - WITHOUT breaking down. It wasn’t the gate, the pigeon or a bad step, it was because she was a huge horse of 17hh with legs far too slender and joints far too small to support the crushing impact of the pressure of that powerful body at speed.
It’s easy to romanticise this but we humans need to change our thought processes around it. Wishing she could have been bred to Secretariat, or any stallion, and speculating about who she could’ve beaten is a fairytale - and one that keeps the desperately sad wheel turning. The TB’s limb is the secret to its success but also its Achilles’ heel. Breeding single-mindedly and relentlessly for one characteristic, in this case, running speed, and never mind if the animal ends up less viable, less able to be robust or have longevity or survive in other ways - is exactly what we should be opposed to. Ruffian, with all her grace and courage, powerfully and emotively showed us why.
She ran in NJ once at Monmouth Park winning the Sorority Stakes..
ruffian
Ruffiam the best
I know she was hurt as a 2 year old but how come she never ran in the Triple Crown races as a 3 year old?
Frank Whiteley said he never intended to run her in the Triple Crown races. He was concerned about running her too hard and too fast after the injury. The plan was she'd win the filly Triple, then the match race. After that Whiteley intended to give her a rest until the fall. Then she'd come roaring back and take on older horses including Forego. That would have been a sight to see. I was lucky enough to watch her run. Still sends chills down my spine after all these years. I believe she would have beaten them all. I also believe she would have beaten Secretariat.
Much lesser horses have beaten Secretariat. Ruffian would have run circles around him.
You're delusional...All except one of Sec's losses came because he was hurt..His three records in the triple crown races still stand after 45 years...his world record 1 1/2 on dirt at the Belmont STILL stands... Ruffian was the best filly ever, but would never beat a healthy Sec at any distance over a mile.
@@TheOrdonje You're entitled to your opinion, but I disagree. If Ruffian had raced Big Red, if she didn't beat him, it would have been very close. We never saw that filly's bottom. A race like that would have been an all out battle to the finish line. She was deliberately held back in most of her races, taught to conserve her speed and strength until needed. Jacinto Vasquez would then let her run at the top of the stretch so she wouldn't get bored. After watching Ruffian win the Spinaway in a 13 length romp Secretariat's trainer, Lucien Lauren, said "As God is my judge, she might be even better than Secretariat!"
@@madcat4301 She'd have a fighters chance at anything a mile or less, but passed that against Sec? Forget it...People don't realize that in the Belmont he ran faster in 1 1/4 miles than he did in the Derby
First hitting the gate, then getting hit in the face by a bird
They could have given more time to read the words. But beautiful otherwise.
