    Lyrical dissection.
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

I was 25 when I first heard 46 & 2, and it blew me away. But listening to it again at 48 it has so much more meaning. Those years of being the person that I felt like everyone's else wanted me to be are falling away. I'm embracing this person who has been in there all along, but suppressed. It's terrifying and liberating! This is the affect Tool's music and Maynard's lyrics have on those that truly listen.

Again, Justin Chancellor's bassline just drives the instrumental part. That guy is off the chain. But this is one hella complex one to analyze the lyrics of. It constantly refers to Jungian psychological concepts (the shadow) and the theories of Drunvalo Melchizedek regarding spiritual evolution and genetics. So much to chew on. This album is just chock full of psycho-spiritual concepts. Nice one, man. This was also the first song that ever made a single chord struck over and over again sound like the coolest ending of all time to me. Peace! Oh, wait! I'ma remind you about "Blood Into Wine". MJK is such an overachiever. since making that documentary, he's released about six albums, maybe more, he still practices martial arts all the time, and he's written and released an autobiography. The guy's a machine. If following his career doesn't inspire you, (or his career-s rather,) it might just make you feel like a worm. The guy doesn't seem to stop, at all, ever. The rest of them are pretty amazing too. Danny Cary is a drummer who's studied at the feet of masters in percussion from, like, everywhere, as well as a committed magician (like Merlin-style, not David Blaine). Adam Jones designed some of the dinosaurs in the first "Jurassic Park" as well as several props for "Terminator 2" and a bunch of other movies. That was his full-time gig before Tool took off. Justin Chancellor... Well, to be honest, I don't know if he does anything other than write killer basslines all day. And if that's all he does, then nearly every song on every Tool album from this one on and whatever put him in this band makes that more than okay in my view.
Right, that's enough of me. Funny you mentioned "Forest Gump". I reckon I'd seen it about fifty times before I was eighteen.
Now I really mean it. Over and out.

@@Skullzrapper Just to help you maybe understand a bit more about Maynard. The song H. isn't about heroin. He's never had a drug problem, nor was he ever abused physically as a child (there's some rumors out there about that as well, mostly due to lyrics on Stinkfist and Sober). You should also check out A Perfect Circle. The songs Judith and Passive are well known to be about his mother, who ended up in a coma before she passed (and who may have been the cause of some emotional abuse/issues). But it's just more really good stuff from Maynard really. Like your reactions though! Earned a sub for sure
Oh and another quick explanation of the 46&2 meaning. If you go into the theories of Carl Jung, you'll find that with the possible 46&2 chromosome pairing would supposedly come a sort of hive mind mentality (similar to bees). Where literally every human would be focused on doing what is best for every other human, and the survival and furthering of the human race as a whole (It's a pretty crazy idea to think of really. Like communism at a genetic level). This could easily tie into the thoughts of raising a child to be better than we are that you were mentioning both on H. and here. And could be thought of as a parent now basically living their life only to better their childs.
Sorry, your reaction thoughts just seemed so spot on with this, that I had to throw you some info to push it further 😂 Great job man!

The “my child” Maynard is referring to in this song is likely not his actual child (this particular song is very unlikely to be that literal), but his old self. This song is about evolution of the self. Self introspection, changing for the better, and being born in new skin.

Skullz, since I may still have your attention, just be careful latching on to initial interpretations of the lyrics. I realize the nature of your channel. But the ambiguous lyrics reach people differently than possibly the intent of Maynard, so having a personal interpretation is safer than assuming the artist intent. I don’t mean any of that negatively at all. I love that you spend the time to see the lyrics as opposed to others that just bob their head because they see it’s popular on CZcams and they can grow their channel. First reactions are pure, and fantastic, but a majority of Tool’s song need repetition and study to really understand the depth. Spiral out! Enjoy the journey. I hope this music helps you and your listeners as much as it’s helped me over the last 20 years.

My absolute favorite Tool song. Shadow work is the hardest thing we can do but the most rewarding. Nothing is faster or more thorough when shadow work is implemented into a spiritual discipline.

Note: from this point forward, Maynard separates himself from the audience. He will allude to work happening behind the veil (sometimes more direct than others), but he is also going to have fun at the audience's expense. Many will smoke up, take the rides he provides, and fail to realize they never left the loop of useful idiots. He gives guruspeak for consumers and shamanic work for creators.

Dude, think how deprived you’ve been for not hearing this till now, my favorite Tool song. Definitely react to “Kid’s Cover Tool 46 and 2” uploaded by O’Keef Music Foundation. It may just be better than the original, for real. A girl sings, she is older now and has her own band called “Saving Escape” and few other kids from the Tool Cover are in her band too.

interesting take, I'be been waiting to see this reaction.....we are talking about one of the greatest rock/metal drummers if our time.....just starting to emerge, the vocals and driving bass that define Tool also emerging...and the riff......what a riff, but I believe this song is about evolving as a human being, desiring to be next level and doing whatever it takes to get there, based on the theory of Carl Jung, the 46&2 is referencing chromosomes.....when Evolution of man happened (we stood up) it was because of an extra set of chromosomes, we became 44 (auto) and 2 (sex) Chromosomes....his theory is we will pick up 2 more and become 46&2 and THIS will be the next step in evolution

Way back in 1992 I lived in Seattle growing up fully engulfed in the grunge scene, I saw it all! One day a friend got tickets to see Henry Rollins at an all ages show at a place called the OZ. I was not a henry fan but why not. The opening act came out and it was Tool! They blew the fucking house down with around maybe 40 people. It was insane! I bought the EP from Adam when we left and to this day am still blown away from that show and the dozens of shows since. I still have the ticket stub from the 92 show..

"The Shadow"as referred to in this song (another brilliant track from they, the four that dare), contrary to being a reference to Maynard's son is often understood to be "The Shadow" or "Shadow Self ", coined by the seminal, renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung 1875-1961.
"Shadow - (archetype) the repressed, therefore unknown, aspects of the personality including those often considered to be negative."
46&2 like you said, seems to be a song of acceptance, investigation, exploration, integration, empowerment and transformation.

Just subscribed to your channel. Really insightful. What I love about Tool’s music, is how a song can continue to add or change meaning the more you listen to it. It requires the audience to be engaged, curious, and dig into research on what it means not only to the band, but ourselves. They also have a playful way of giving a title to the songs. Instead of Evolving, how about 46/2. Instead of The Bridge, how about H. Of course Hooker with a Penis has everyone anticipating….well you get it. Not sure if anyone has shared with you that Adam and Tom Morello from Rage were high school buddies in Illinois and played in a band together. One goes into special effects for movies, and the other political science at Harvard I believe. Oddly enough they both end up at Lollapoluza 93 in different bands. Maynard actually tried out for Rage. Since he wasn’t the vibe they were looking for, Tom introduced Maynard to Adam. Lol. Can’t make this shit up.

The idea of the shadow is all the bad and terrible things we dont consider part of us.
But in order to progress, we need to accept that all these bad things are within us, we need to wallow in that in order to step through the shadow and come out a better person, with a better understanding of who we are.

    • @zm5668
      @zm5668 Před 2 lety

It's easy to look at a murderer and say I'm not that type of person. Or a less extreme example, I would never be an ahole.
But of we don't accept we are as human as them, and work on this elements that are deep within all humans, we are only doing a surface level job of working on the individual people we are.
This is heavily pulled from Jungian philosophy a day the song becomes a wonderfully deep way to explain how we can mentally evolve. And is a continuation of all the stiff you have picked up on in earlier albums

Shrooms, first time Tool, lost for two hours in a room, four concerts gone, “just a part of me”

I've been watching Tool reaction videos on and off now to get another perspective after listening to the band for years. Many people so far have looked at H in the way of addiction, taking H as literal street name for heroin and the song being overcoming that addiction. Which in a way it could be.
When you're picking up on Maynard's use of child may not be a literal child, but the child that's in us that drives our impulses, desires and indulgence to make it feel ok.
I've recently read up on transactional analysis where our personality is made up of Parent, Adult and Child, so I can understand myself while recieving therapy. Listening to these reactions is making more sense to what I've learnt and understanding Maynard some more.
The judgemental fearsome snake is more the parent in us and it's through our free adult to reason and learn why our child is so frightened and assure it that it's ok. To do so is to step through the shadows inside us so we can understand why we're so scared of them.
This is probably why Tool are so meticulous when it comes to the production of their albums and why each album is a journey by how they're structured.
