    One of the hardest hitting lines for me, and I believe the starting point of Kendal flipping a switch, is when Naomi says “Ken, he loves the broken you.” His father only loved him when he wasn’t a threat, submissive, and broken. Kendal immediately gets illuminated as if finally seeing the difference between the pitty love he was getting while broken and the respect love he wanted from his father. If his father will only do pitty love, then it’s not worth trying to get him to love you.

    Another reason the “no real people involved” line hits Kendall so hard is that waiter would be one of those not “real” people. Kendall feels immense guilt over his death and towards his family that it’s clear Logan does not care about people like him. Kendall’s sees that he himself is a very different person to Logan since he actually has some capability for empathy and realised that he can’t win against Logan by trying to impress him he has to go the complete opposite direction because he’ll never be like him.

    Another thing in the finale that shows he is the right person to succeed, everyone else defends their partner. Shiv asks for Tom to be spared, essentially saying to Logan that she doesn't want the seat if it causes Tom to be sacrificed. Likewise Roman stands up for Jerri, whilst it's doubtful Logan knows about their romantic involvement, he is likely aware that Jerri has been guiding Roman. However, when Logan asks Kendall to send Naomi away, he does it without question.

      @spewter Před 3 lety +71

      I think you’ve drunk the Kool Aid! The idea that you must betray your loved ones to succeed is pure Logan Roy sociopathy.
      Shiv and Roman both had huge wake up calls. Roman with his hotel imprisonment, and Shiv when Tom finally called her out for her wedding night desire for an open marriage. Their motives were complex but Shiv and Roman were in part trying not to be purely selfish for once.
      Kendall's statement at the press conference was also a sign of growth in that he spoke plainly about his father's abusive nature.
      Succession is a story about family abuse. Logan Roy has destroyed his children's ability to love and trust. They don't know how to have relationships that aren't transactional. Roman and Jerri have their pact. Shiv and Tom have their plan. Connor and Willa have the play (not to mention she was a sex worker!)
      Kendall doesn't use his relationships for utility but he can be cruel and selfish. In season 1 he couldn't hear his ex-wife's clear statement that they weren't getting back together. In season 2 he flew the actor from Willa's play to Dundee then dumped her via a Roy employee because his Dad disapproved of her use of the word "awesome".
      Going back to who should run Waystar Royco. All I'll say now is...
      If you think cruelty is an essential tool of corporate leadership, then perhaps it's time to reconsider capitalism.

      here, I think SamTheBroGamer's response was based in the confines of this fictional family and storyline. These people are self-aggrandizing morally bankrupt people whose only claim to fame is money. So having said that, I think his assertion has merit and argument could be made in support of. I don't know why everyone forgets the phone call Logan gets from the shareholders in the beginning of the finale. Logan is told carte blanche his head has to roll and no one else's will do. Again, this season was all about Kendall's redemption. NRPI. Logan knew how much the kid Kendall killed mean't to Kendall. These words, along with "you're not a killer" is what pushed Kendall to turn on Logan. All by Logan's design.

    • @toddcutsuries54
      @toddcutsuries54 Před 2 lety +13

      I agree. This is a very good assessment and could very well be plausible. For Logan to not fall on the knife is unacceptable from the shareholders standpoint, by having Kendall out him shows strong leadership and aligns with the shareholders wishes. However, if this was indeed Logan’s doing, this means that Kendall will only be a leader through Logan’s proxy - which means Logan is still in charge…

    I'm a little late to the party but I wanted to mention that breakfast scene in the yacht that happens in this episode. It's one of my favorite scenes in any tv show and a brilliant example of the show's writing. It shows how each character is, in the end, in it for themselves. Their selfishness and egoism are on full display. The writing is almost Shakesperian with the wit and the characters quickly trying to defend themselves by accusing someone else. It's crazy how great this show is. October can't come soon enough.

  • @berfinaltnsk1699
    @berfinaltnsk1699 Před 3 lety +199

    'it was all part of his plan' is too cheap a trick that I hope Succession didn't use because it would be very disappointing and would make the finale much weaker. We know that Logan isn't exactly the all knowing anti-hero that plans every single move and is not necessarily more intelligent than everybody else- Kendall did almost take him down in 1x10, for all we know Logan was caught unprepared and if it wasn't for the last minute cover up for the murder, Logan did not have any leverage against Kendall. He can manipulate the feelings of his children but to rest of the world he's a bully with money and that's mainly how he gets what he wants. I think the smile indicates his satisfaction at Kendall's arc and killer instinct(which is also what Shiv told Kendall he lacked in the first season), but that does not mean he is just going to take the fall because he's too selfish and lacks any moral inclination to do that - Logan thinks of himself first and foremost. Noting that Greg and Kendall have bonded on multiple occasions (Kendall gave him an apartment, Greg was assigned as Kendall's companion on his lower moments etc) and Greg is the only character in the show who suggested having some form of moral principles (when he said he believed in the integrity of news and wanted to be transferred) I do think there could be an earnest alliance there. I hope this was an actual twist/betrayal, because it aligns more with what the show is trying to do- we're not supposed to let Logan take us for a ride, we're supposed to question everyone's loyalties and ours, and there is a dynamism that comes with the multiple possibilities. The show does not side with or admire Logan; on many occasions it shows us his shortcomings and cruelty, and he gets cornered by rivals pretty frequently which he cannot get out. I think in the last decade of anti-hero shows where the characters are unbelievably intelligent, all-knowing and calculating God-like figures, we're trained to think that they cannot be defeated, they must have seen this coming etc. But now this seems like a tired, lazy trope which leaves no chance to be surprised and excited. I think it's time to leave this trope behind because frankly it got old and this creates much better drama.
    Love the video by the way! And your lovely accent :)

      Agreed. If Logan actually orchestrated this highly unpredictable outcome, it would make it seem that Logan is almost a divine writer of the script....that he's outside the show. I think they gave Logan that tiiiiiiiny smile at the Season 2 closing because Logan is pleased that Kendall is blossoming to be who he needs to be and isn't just a broken, guilt riddled drug addict. But for Logan to have *planned* for Kendall to betray him....that would be a huge leap beyond credibility. I really really hope they don't do this.

    • @patmos09
      @patmos09 Před 3 lety +9

      I think it was not that it was an intentional outcome, but at that specific impasse he knew he was putting his son in a situation where he COULD do it, and either outcome was preferable to Logan. If Kendal betrays him, he deserves the throne, if Kendal folds, Logan deserves the throne. I don;t thin kit was orchestrated so much as Logan gave his son one final chance to do it right, and if he didn't, Logan's original vision that he be the one to lead the firm, not his son, would be proven valid.
      The key point is the weird way Logan says "sure, maybe, but you aren't a killer"- it was off his character to say that, like it was a dare. He didn't plan for it, but he either subconsciously or intentionally left it as an option.

      @tinetannies4637 Před 3 lety +4

      @@patmos09 I generally agree with you except the last part about Logan telling Kendall he isn't a killer. Logan said it more with a tone of resignation and fact than as a dare, and that's because even though Kendall actually did kill someone, he demonstrated throughout the show that he doesn't have the ruthless spirit of a killer. Kendall repeatedly resorted to drugs as a form of escapism, he broke down and couldn't handle the emotional stress of being an actual killer, he returned a broken man to the supportive arms of his father. Contrast this to Logan, who blithely looks at people being killed as NRPI....No Real Person Involved. Logan DOES have the soul of a killer

He is obiectivelly the perfect person. And he is slowly dying. Goddamnit, he is 82 at the end of the s2e10. The only thing he really has to do now is protect the company and find a fitting successor. Overall, you can see that from s1e1 logan is trying to turn his children into responsible adults. Crazy Roman, that was shit at everything he did, is slowly starting to learn and might be a good COO. Shiv, even though she was determined to do somehing on her own, is back in the family business, and possibly able to take over pr and marketing parts of the company, and replace logan in the relationships with politicians (since nor Ken nor Rom have any). What's crazy is this SHOWS how fucking powerful and intelligent Logan is. I truly believe that Logan orchestrated this entire situation-he definitely groomed Kendall into flipping and has ultimately turned Kendall into the "killer". Kendall is in full belief that he now has the power and has turned on his father. BUT, this is exactly what Logan wanted! Everything he wants, he GETS, and this finale shows it all. Logan made it very clear that nobody thought it would be a good idea to throw him as the face of the Cruises negligence, so he had to make sure he could point the fingers back at him without making it look like it was his decision because everybody would clearly be against that idea. I mean, this finale just SHOWS that even though kendall completely flipped the script, it is truly Logan that gets the results that he wants. He just manipulated his son into taking the throne. YES! From the very beginning Logan doesn't show that he doesn't want to be succeeded by Kendall, he shows that he doesn't want to be succeeded by Kendall at a stage where Kendall follows his father. Logan wants Kendall to be diametrically his opposite because only then succession is possible. Succession is possible only when one thing is followed by anOTHER.
      Logan clearly shows that he wants to be succeeded by Kendall. At the end of season 1 ("you are my number one boy") and the start of season 2 (Logan telling Shiv that he will make Kendall CEO, and only offering her CEO position to change her decision to sell).
      Hence at the end Logan smirks in pride and contentment, knowing that he has found his successor, a person who is completely opposite of him.

    this whole thing with kendall "killing" the waiter. first off the waiter himself turned the car steering wheel into the body of water in which he drowned (to dodge the deer in the road). kendall tried twice to save him but couldn't. we have no evidence to suggest kendall is a very good swimmer and no reason to think he only half heartedly tried to. if one were to go with the "well the waiter only drove off the road since he was connecting kendall to a coke dealer he knew since kendall asked". that IS true, but the waiter was perfectly fine agreeing to do that (kendall wasn't threatening him if he didn't help and could've just said he didn't know any coke dealers if he didn't want to do this). he was high on ketamine and had that already on his person (or in his car). so he's a regular K user with at least contacts to coke dealers. kendall didn't cause any of that. we're to believe that this regular drug abuser couldn't have at any old time not died the exact same way he did without kendall? really. people high on drugs often drive off the road when they make quick reactions due to motor skills loss from being on drugs. it's not like kendall forced this guy to do drugs then drive while on them. this was literally a traffic accident, possibly caused by 2 drug abusers driving in the rain to obtain drugs but people die like that all the time (even sober people).

    Logan usually gets pissed off if things doesn’t go his way. Surprisingly he wasn’t angry this time. I think Logan realizes a new “sun” did rise but not how he originally thought.

    This reminds of Anakin and Palpatine a bit almost. The ending reminded me of episode three in that Kendall turned to the dark side by killing his father, he is now the killer that his father once said he could never be, and his father smiles because he is now a killer just like him. This to me seemed like when Anakin turned to the dark side and palpatine was smiling too at the fall of this person. Kendall is a killer now and in their industry, you have to be a killer. Now he isn’t a broken robot, but rather a person who has the same instincts and ruthlessness as his father. Over time he probably will become just like him.

    Great content man. You're almost to 1k! #subbed

    The way I see it, Ken doesnt have anything to lose anymore now that his father has sold him out. He's in a no-win situation so employed a lose-lose strategy instead.

    Ok to your analysis, but, the most beautiful aspect of the episode is when the underlying conspiracy is subtly revealed by Shiv when she goes out on the sun deck to signal to Kendal that Logan is available and it is time to set the trap. Kendal takes off his earphones and acknowledges "message received". Also note that Shiv has approached Tom and informs him that he is to be spared. Kendal goes out to Logan and volunteers to be sacrificed. Logan, again reveals his ruthlessness by accepting Kendal's offer with little remorse (thus saving his own fat ass). In Kendal's mind, this confirms the justification for the dastardly deed he is about to perform. Later, as Logan announces the decision that Kendal will be the sacrificial lamb, Kendal discreetly glances at Shiv -- So subtle, so beautifully presented ----

      I totally interpreted it in a different way. I thought Shiv was just acting out of concern for Tom. When she looks at Ken, it's because she just discussed with Logan and putting the blame on Ken made sense. Ken acknowledges that he's probably the one on the chopping block because really he's not the one to offer himself up first. Logan already starts rationalizing and Kendall just says OK. It's because he says no one involved and Ken feels guilty and wants Andrew Dodds to be acknowledged instead of disappeared that he does that I think.

    The season two finale our gut tells us that it’s going to be Kendal that Logan sacrifices but we as the audience are like there’s no way Logan puts him down even further right? But yeah he totally will try to sacrifice Kendal.
