- Joe Gilgun, AKA Woody from This Is England '88 does his best to refrain from swearing when he joined Geoff Lloyd's Hometime Show for a chat about the brilliant new Shane Meadows series , as well as his previous roles in Corrie and Emmerdale, postmodern burps and more.

It struck me watching the recent This is England series just how good an actor Joe is. Bearing in mind This is England has more than a good sprinkling of ad-lib, he really is phenomenal. His filmography makes for depressing reading... when will a British director give him the platform his talent deserves??? He needs the big screen.

I love Joe Gilgun and his dry wit. Such a character, but also a great actor! I'd love to be his mate, as he always makes me laugh. I actually used to live in Chorley, Lancashire (where Joe is from). Never saw him though, but my brother did see him a few years ago in Greggs (the bakers) in Chorley town centre. We need to see you on TV more, Joe! Nice one, Mate... \m/ (:o)

i used to live next door to joe absolute top bloke funny and disorganised but 100% genuine down to earth nice guy no bullshit with him what you see is what you get totally unchanged with fame and celebrity just a really cool as fuck guy we could all learn something from him x

The fight between Milky and Woody in 88' is some of the best acting I've ever seen
Not ashamed to say that I bawled my eyes out during that scene and later on during the hospital scene. Fucking powerful stuff.

Just binged the film and the whole series for probably the 10th time. Love them all, but I suppose 86 is my favorite.
I discovered the series from a DVD that I borrowed from my local library. So bloody good, AND, I was introduced to Fionn Regan and his beautiful song ' Dogwood Blossom. ' from the first series. May never have found this music otherwise, and I'm very grateful.

I only heard of him from his character Cassidy from preacher. He did a good job in that show. So now i m here giving him his due credits. He is a good actor
Gilgun certainly is a charismatic individual, I'm from the States and when I first saw the film I absolutely fell in love with his persona due to his qualities as a decent human being and a good friend from what I perceive. I know the actor does portray his faults as well but that's what makes him all the more charming and suck you into his character as he flourishes throughout the series. Cheers to Joseph, I'm a fan and it would be hard to deter me from staying one! I look forward to his works!
Great interview , this is England is a great movie. Plus the TV series is just as great. With really good cast and it seems so real. Hearing as improvised makes sense.

It was a really incredible scene. It just went on and on, becoming more painful to watch. This Is England '88 was spectacular in my opinion, and I don't use that word lightly. Although '86 was fantastic, I found it an odd mixture of light and very dark. The humour was more complex - Woody slowly unravelling managed to be humorous and very sad. I think in a way '88 was darker than '86, although less brutal. That scene that goes completely silent as Lol feels Mick in the room was so disturbing.

Full credit had to go to him for that street fight scene with Milky. The way he was able to go from being happy to pure rage was brilliantly acted. Some try to be overly dramatic which ends up ruining the scene but he nailed it as did the other actors involved. First rate job.
He's a great actor and think he's very attractive...and the accent, oh god I love it.

The first time I saw the film 'This is England' I connected Woody to that kid he played on Coronation street. I never watch coronation street these days and havent watched it for years but I do remember him playin that kid Jamie. Would be funny to see a clip of that again but I dont think there are any around now.

@catcherinthesky1 I hate to say it, but I wasn't in the States when I saw the film and I did see '86 and '88 but I got them on DVD. I live in Mexico and work as an English teacher so most of my contact with the media is via the internet. :P Also I can't wait for '90 to come out, I'm so in love with the series that I even dream that I hang out with the characters xD Meggy was my bus driver in the last one.

i loved the shows, i thought woody was brilliant and Shane is a genius, but fuck the vicks, when woody said he was born in 84, well my daughter as born in 82 and died 5 and a half years ago..... i didnt need any vicks and i crying my eyesout - even off screen shane hits me right in the heart

Its funny I have this friend from New Orleans and he said that I had an Eastern Canadian accent. (Im from Ontario). But I dont sound like a Newfoundlander. Lol I prob do sound Canadian eh🇨🇦
I cant hear my accent. Ive been asked if Im from California by a Californian. I guess Canadians have distinctive accents, however Ontarians in my opinon have the least noticeable stereotypical accent.
