Silence Is Complicity: Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac Calls Upon U.S. Churches | August 14, 2024

  • In 1967, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to The Riverside Church to deliver his speech, “Beyond Vietnam - A Time to Break Silence,” where he called on America to admit it’s wrongdoings to the people of Vietnam, atone, and take initiative in working towards peace. Today, 57 years later, Americans find ourselves needing to break the silence yet again and admit our complicity in the genocide of Palestinians, atone, and work towards peace.
Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac, a prominent Palestinian Christian leader from Bethlehem, recently gained widespread attention for his Christmas sermon, 'Christ in the Rubble.' In this talk, he addresses the consequences of silence from American churches and the role of Christian Zionism in supporting the ongoing apartheid and genocide in the West Bank and Gaza. The event will be followed by a Q&A session.

Even God himself I'm sure can't find forgiveness for a people who use his name in vain. God has no favorites.

I'm a Bosnian Muslim and this whole presentation brought me to tears. Selam to this amazing Preacher. I've watched him number of times and it's people like him that give me glimmer of hope in these dark times.
Since this Genocide began in Palestine, I have been re-living the Bosnian one, over and over again. I can't stop crying daily, as each day, there's a new massacre or horror story in Palestine. I feel so sad that in such a short time in my life, I had to witness not 1 but 2 Genocides on people close to my heart.
I kept hoping Humanity would progress beyond such a barbaric hatred of the other but then came Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria and Israel never stopped slaughtering Palestinians. Millions of people murdered, injured, displaced, made homeless, starved, you name it. That sense of hopelessness I felt during the Bosnian Genocide returned in full force.
I truly wanted to believe in Human Rights and equality that West always preaches to others, but I quickly realised it's all a lie. All I've seen from these so-called enlightened Nations, beacons of Democracy and Human rights, is injustice and slaughter. Thank God they have been exposed as never before. I attribute that to God's plan through brave and beautiful Palestinian people.
May God guide these Warmongers to the right path, but I dare say, God isn't on their mind or in their hearts. They're only driven by power and greed, despite many of them with one foot in the grave, where they will meet their maker and be judged for what they have done.

Indeed the comparison of MLK, Jr's profound reckoning of our complicity with war and death, with Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac is most worthy. Risking his life, standing up clearly to the horror our nation supports, this 100 year + apartheid, clearly "Breaking the Silence", the narrative still maintained in our society and media. Profoundly grateful Riverside for hosting and bringing this vital message. Time to speak up, to stand up, to stop the killing, to push for his direction of all living together... in respect. I first heard of Fr. Munther Isaac this past Christmas, when I was fortunate to come across his tremendously moving and unforgettable Christ in the Rubble sermon .
It is unimaginably hard to believe that as bad as it was in Gaza at the end of 2023, that the scale of this horror has worsened, and shows no sign of abating.
The hierarchy of the Catholic church to which I belong has turned its back on the Palestinians, the Muslims and the Christians alike.
Why, oh why, oh why? Did something buy this silence? Was this silence forced on them? The Church is indelibly stained.
So sorry to learn a day late of Fr. Munther's visit to the NYC metropolitan area, after the fact.
May God bless this holy messenger and the peoples for whom he speaks--the dead, and the mutilated, scarred, sickened and traumatized who are alive still.
