People often forget that Alice in Chains was the first so called grunge band from seattle to have a record go gold with 1990’s Facelift. In fact, i’ve done a whole video on facelift and the making of that album, the link is down below. But one other thing people often forget about alice in chains is that their roots were a glam metal band. In today’s video lets explore the glam history of Alice in Chains.
The history of alice in chains really started in 1984 when singer when Layne Staley successfully auditioned for a band named Sleaze thanks to his brother who had an in with the band. Originally a drummer, Layne had transitioned to a singer. The audition would happen in the basement of one of the members of Sleze with the Atlantic writing "before playing together, the band members noticed his tall stature, soft-spoken demeanour, and that he was very much dressed for the part of a rock musician, with band names like "Ozzy" or "Mötley Crüe" written on his pants in bleach. This audition was said to have taken place sometime in 1984. The lineup of Sleze was made up of drummer Carl Bergstrom, guitarists Johnny Bacolas, Ed Semanate as well as bassist Byron Hansen. The first song they played with Layne was a cover of the Motley crue song “looks that kill”
The members of Sleaze were blown away by Layne’s audition, not just because he could sing in key, but because he had his own unique style as well. He would get the job as the singer of the band. Sleze mostly played cover songs and was a glam rock band. Sleze's live shows mostly attracted women and it saw them hrowing roses into the audience to the women and a friend would even come on stage with a mirror so the members could freshen up. Layne would come on stage riding a big wheel that had the word the “Laynemobile”written on it, which was a spoof of Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford riding a motorcycle on stage. The band’s wardrobe was inspired by a friend of there’s named Lisa Rammell who told David De Sola in the book 'Alice in Chains the Untold Story.' “They would wear my pink and black spandex pants. I had a huge collection of belts and lace globes and tank tops and necklaces and sarves. I did their hair, taught them how to do their makeup and they looked like Poison out there.” The band would even meet ahead of gigs at a local Denny’s and plan their onstage moves.
By 1985 Layne had gotten a job at a place called the Music bank, which was a building that housed a number rehearsal spaces that were open 24/7. In addition to that it was pretty common for musicians to live there as well.
And by 1986 Sleze felt confident enough to record their first demo. That dem o would feature glammy songs include 'lip lock rock' and 'fat girls.' Tim Branom who produced Sleze first demo recalled working with Layne on his vocals telling david de sola
“”I worked with layne for months on his vocals. I was able to afford to go to maestro david kyle for lessons, but layne wasn’t so he would come a few times a week to my house to my house and we could go over the cassette tapes of my vocal warm ups. After he had done this for six months, the notes just flowed out effortlessly. Layne took a serious interest in working on his vocals as well because according to Branom it would save the band money in the studio. “ later on in layne’s career he would study under david kyle who also taught Geoff Tate of Queensryche, as well as Ann Wilson of Heart.
By 1986 the group soon had discussions about changing their name to It is said that credit for the name Alice in Chains goes to Slaughter Haus 5 singer Russ Klatt. At a party in 1986 Johnny Bacolas ran in to Klatt. And according to De Sola the pair chatted about changing Sleze’s name and Layne and Bacolas had previously designed backstage passes for their band that read “Sleze Welcome to Wonderland Tour.” Soon enough the pair were ta - Hudba

RIGHT???
It’s so crazy how Layne and Jerry met. Together those guys had something so perfect and undeniable. Jerry the heart and Layne the soul. There are moments on Dirt where those guys are harmonizing and it’s almost spiritual.

I really hate those guys. I think they’re half the reason I have only rarely attended a metal show after high school. You can’t even have a decent conversation with those guys without them correcting you on something.
First time i saw Layne sing, he was in the glam band version of AiC. My band, Raw Silk, opened up a show they played at. They were a very good band!
We ALL handed out roses!
And, we all bummed David Kyle tapes off eachother!
We ALL wore girls’ clothes!
They were great times, in the NW
Whoah! I remember Raw Silk! From Olympia right? What did you play? I used to be in the scene and take lessons from Maestro David Kyle back then too! Good times man!
@@oceanaxim yep, i was the lead singer of Raw Silk! Our guitarist, Darrin Hogue still lives in the Yelm area, and has some of our live footage on his CZcams channel.
Kevin, our bassist lives in Norcal, and Russ our drummer in LA.
I also sang in the band Rude Awakening, from Aberdeen for a couple years, we practiced above a fish market, in the same studio as Metal Church... tried to get Sonny Harper from Cyprus the lead singer gig with them... i wish that had panned out- he was such a good singer!
@@allendean9807 Wow it is all coming back to me now! Yeah I remember Cyperus too. holy shit, your cool 😎😎
Facelift one of my favorite albums of that era....the opening riff of man in a box is killer!!!!
Back in the mid/late 80's, the Seattle scene was starting to gel, and at that time, the glam metal scene was huge in LA. So a lot of bands looked to sound like that to try and get signed to a record deal. Early on, it was really Green River and Soundgarden as the two main Seattle bands. After Green River broke up, Stone and Jeff formed Mother Love Bone, and that definitely had a glam vibe to it. Soundgarden drew more from old metal (Sabbath/Zeppelin), with hardcore/punk mixed in. Alice in Chains was from Tacoma, and had more of a metal/glam vibe early on. Nirvana came a bit later, from Aberdeen (on the WA coast), and they avoided any glam connection.
I love the song “We Die Young,” such a great band. Layne Staley’s vocals are amazing and to this day unmatched. Layne with crimped hair, awesome, the 80’s was a great era, so much fun, especially for those of us that managed to live through it... so many did not.

OMG. This reminds me of actually seeing inside the closet of a member of Winger in 1995. I've never seen so much white and pink dyed leather and studded belts in my life..
Winger never wore pink and by 1995 they had already disbanded.
@@frankdrebin259- Winger didn't consider themselves broken up in 1995. They were still trying to get Kip out of his house in Arizona. I met Paul Horowitz (Taylor) through my friend Cheryl Brewster, who's son Lincoln Brewster was playing guitar with Steve Perry in 1995, on his "For The Love Of Strange Medicine" tour. (Along with Paul) - I got to know Paul when he took my pictures for my acting headshots that year. He didn't charge me as he was just starting out in photography, looking for something to do after Winger. In 95, I helped him clear out a bedroom in his house so he could turn it into a sound studio and we all laughed at his pink and white leather and hilarious 80's clothes. Reb Beach was actually there too. He was visiting from Pittsburgh and signed my Fender Strat.
But please Robert, tell me more about the history of Winger.
Kip winger might be my friend's dad, his mom was a groupie and she never got it checked out.
If glam metal helped form Alice In Chains, it’s all good.
Nothing wrong with having fun in the music. No harm done. "90s rock is diverse compared to 80s rock." Wrong. That is not what diversity means. Diversity never means less fun. Diversity means a range of differences and ideas. "Grunge is more realistic and tackles real life issues." So does 80s music, even 70s and 60s music do that too. Also, there are people who love to get away from politics and stick to music, cartoons, and other art mediums. Whether you like happy, sad, or angry music, that is all on you. Never bully others for having a different taste nor facts you never want to know.
Some Glam Rock/Glam Metal aint too bad. A lot of glam metal bands were kindve shitty and embarassing to look back at all this years later. But on the contrary, im a big fan of Motley Crue and poison is okay too lol.
Chris Chaos dokken and W.a.s.p were sick glam bands
@@chrissychaos I think that's just the thing with most of the major trends in music. There's always a few great representatives of each wave, and then there's a lot of mediocrity.

Damn, I miss Layne so much
Me too❣️
Yes me too
He was an amazing voice and talent.
Wow, I never knew this. Those glam photos and videos are amazing.
I didn't forget.
Listen to their Demos, Social Parasite is heavy glam.
Sunshine from Facelift kept some of that flavour.
I never knew about this stuff. I've had facelift CD in my truck for like 15 years and there are definitely a couple songs on there that I thought were a little corny. I prefer dirt
They even opened part of Poison's _Flesh & Blood_ tour after _Facelift_ was released.
They also toured with Extreme, Van Halen and also Iggy Pop 😂 in 1990 and 1991. They took whatever they could get and it was a wise decision in my opinion 🤘🏽
Yeah, Facelift definitely has remnants of glam not featured on future albums: the pre-chorus to "Sunshine" as you noted, "I Know Somethin (Bout You)," "Put You Down," and the vocal theatrics on "Real Thing" are very reminiscent of Ratt. Not to mention the unused demos.
I've already thought of the name of the band that Jerry (guitar) Sean (drums), Phil (vocals) and Rex (bass) can form to celebrate their glam past:
*Steel Panther in Chains*
Honestly, this really makes me think about the hidden potential of so many bands and musicians who never managed to break out of what was popular at the time, only regurgitating the same musical ideas without finding and using their own true artistic voice. I think we can all be glad that the band found theirs.
I was their crew / roadie thru all this from version 1.0 to Facelift's release. Thanks for this video ! I left the music scene upon Facelift's release and went racing. Alice in Chains sponsored my NASCAR Super Stock in 1994. I won 5 NASCAR championships at Evergreen Speedway. I even arranged a race between them and 4 of KISW's DJ's and the grand stands were packed and 20 keg's got drained in the infield after the races... Man I wish I had the race video to post on CZcams . I miss these fuckers ! Jeff Hubbard
Lying season and social parasite are two amazing songs
I heard Lyring Season well late, it sounds amazing.
@Christopher Bingham There are two different versions of it, they are both awesome.
What a voice Layne Staley had. In those early days his vocals can only be heard by dogs.
Rock N Roll True Stories the lady that said she was doing their makeup and hair and that they were wearing all of her clothes then says "they looked like poison out there." That sucks for them to be compared to poison during that time period.
Facelift was more of a rock album, recorded in 1990. But they were from Seattle, so you knew 1992's Dirt would be super grungy.
Which is kinda ironic since Dirt was recorded in LA lol
I always thought Dirt sounded more metal than facelift
Layne honestly looks awesome in that glam metal hairstyle!
Layne can never be uncool or lame IMO.
That's what made AIC standout, they had the metal roots and didn't lose that.
Sleze is a dope band name
The “classic” Chains line-up (Facelift members) have always had that distinct signature “Chains” sound. While they may have dressed “glam” they definitely didn’t sound glam at the time...
I love the glam era of bands aswell as the grunge era. Layne is a true icon, what a set of pipes that lad had on him 🔥
Fantastic content. I've been a fan of Alice in Chains for years and I also played their songs for a long time with a band in Brasilia / Brazil for a long time. I was unaware of many of the details of the history of one of my favorite bands. Thanks!
thanks
Olá, Filipe... Se quiser saber mais da história da banda, tem uma ótima biografia escrita por David Sola que provavelmente foi a fonte para esse capítulo. Existem muitos registros desde a infancia dos membros da banda, principalmente do Layne. O livro é Alice in Chains: a História Não Revelada
Love those alice in chains videos.
His high school band! He was still light years beyond in his vocal range even then.
I don't understand how anyone could put a thumbs down and be sincere. Your music is healing and life giving. Thank you!
Idk there’s a few comments making fun of hair metal even tho there was some decent bands from that era.
This is why I always find it fascinating how opposite ends of the spectrum the guys in Nirvana were compared to AIC. Both the same age.....grew up in the same general area of the Northwest and at the height of the 80s glam metal Nirvana guys never had any resemblance of the glam scene whereas other bands where full 100% into that scene before doing a complete 180.
The Seattle sound did not exist in a vacuum. Queensryche ...
Yep
@Luke I don't know how anyone could have thought the guitar solo from heaven beside you was nirvana. Kurt had a gritty voice, Jerry's is smooth. And the riff from the song doesn't sound like nirvana at all to me
I had a good laugh when i saw in the comments here that some people thought "Heaven Beside You" was from Nirvana, hahaha!!! It sounds nothing like Nirvana!!!
Kurt had his own thing and was great. But he couldn't play let alone write Heaven Beside You on his best day.
Memories. Layne was working with Maestro during the same period I was. We crossed paths a few times. Such a tragic loss.
I like how at 9:21, there was a picture of AIC sharing the stage with Poison
Yes!!! No one ever talks about this but they all have the perfect glam hair! Very nice! 👌
Beautifully and respectfully done. I enjoyed it.🌹
This band is amazing ❤ I saw them many times in the early 90s. Rip Layne and Mike
Thanks for the great video and new info
Such a great band. Unique with a uniqueness across songs. Grunge? Yeah, some of it, some of it metal.
Grunge was ecclectic itself. Heavy deep sounds from bands like AIC and Soundgarden, pop-punk sensibilities from Nirvana, and a mixture of both from STP...and somewhere in there, though not Seattle, you got Smashing Pumpkins. All of them did great things at that time.
Such a great band!
Former assistant to Alice Cooper, Brian "Renfield" Nelson, had this story about, how in about 1989 and he and Alice were in Seattle on a promo tour for the Trash album, and there was this weird little guy following them around town, and he finally gets the nerve to approach Alice, and hands Alice a cassette tape. It was Layne Staley handing Alice an Alice In Chains demo tape.
Thanks for making this interesting and informative video 🤘🏻
Great job as always...👍
Queen of the Rodeo for the win. My favorite
Love that song too
I love these vids thank you so much for the info!!
Layne's old bandmate Nick Pollock formed a band called My Sister's Machine. They put out two albums and had a vaguely similar sound to Alice In Chains - more hard rock-sounding than punk - but not nearly as dark.
I love My Sisters Machine. They were more of an Alt-Metal band, and they were quite dark in tone, overall. Hugely underrated band.
@@ShonnDaylee They could be dark in tone, but they didn't plunge into those depths of despair the way AIC did.
@@robwalsh9843 Not quite AS FAR, agreed, but dark, nonetheless. The lyrics to This is Fear are quite dark. Just not as focused on going down the drug rabbit hole, as AIC. I still have my cassette tape of My Sisters Machine. I heard them on KISW (I live near Seattle), and went out and bought the tape the next day. Solid purchase!
they were a great band.
KISW just turned 50. The Rocket isnt around anymore.
It took me less than one week to deeply fall in love with this channel.😁
Alice in chains is one of the most influential bandas in rock history and no boody understand it.. They are the lost bridge between 80s metal and new metal (proto-new metal) a sound that seems so distant one from another to the point most people doesnt understand how can they be subgéneros of the same genere.. Well.. Alice in chains is the answer.
Great video. Can't get enough of AiC.
Ironically I had the Alice in Chains song "brush away" in my head when I woke up today, and then I click on this video first.

Mike Star once told me his favorite bass player was Tony Cavazo of early LA Sunset glam scene. At the time Tony was playing in Snow, then Quiet Riot, then Hurricane.
Excellent! Thank you!!!
King's X was a band they wanted to emulate with vocal harmonies. Always thought that was cool.
Sleze is a great glam band name!
I would love to hear Layne belt out some classic Motley Crue songs!
There’s several videos of them doing Taxi Driver by Hanoi Rocks. The best one I’ve seen is from 1989 WSU, Layne is 🔥 on that song 🤘🏽
Thank you for this
Social Parasite.. Whatcha Gonna Do.. Killing Yourself.. I Can't Have You Blues..
Unknown songs arguably as good as anything off the classic albums.
It's cool and interesting to see the growing pains, false starts, failed experiments in a group or artist finding "their sound" OR their "fit in the marketplace". And a blessing for those for whom that's one and the same!
Yeah, especially when they drop like rolling thunder!
Don't forget, Pantera also once had a guitarist named "Diamond Darrell."
Great video
Layne’s vocal style makes much more sense when you see it in the context of a dude who started in glam. Listening to God Smack or the bridge in Don’t Follow, it’s like “whaaaatttt”…but if you think gypsy metal/Axl Rose/Faster Pussycat, it clicks immediately. He took that vocal delivery and morphed it into this dark, disturbing, gargled wail that was somehow repulsive and angelic at the same time. Definitely one of the most unique singers in rock history and his various influences had a *lot* to do with it.
Fact Check: the dates are wrong here. While recording our first record Dangerous Toys in LA in 1988 I met Mike Starr then bass for Alice in Chains. Both bands were on Columbia. Mike had zero money so I bought him a beer at Coconut Teazer. I got their Demo tape from our Rep at the label and it sounded Glammie. I remember the song "Queen of the Rodeo". Maybe a spoof but was about a crossdresser. Funny stuff. I should have sought out Mike when he was out of Chains and I left Toys. Maybe he could have bought me a beer. Cheers
You guys should start a band.
Holy shit you were in Dangerous Toys?
That must have been a blast.

I was very deep into that stuff then, REvolting, Ministry et al but AIC broke through with the tunes sticking in my head for days. Still do.

2:03 "I did their hai" wow man
Not gonna lie, while i always remember Pantera's glam past, i keep on forgetting AIC has one too. Seems funny how both became some of the heaviest mainstream bands in the early 90s!

Nobody thinks AiC was the first grunge band, Mother Love Bone (later became Pearl Jam and Soundgarden), and Green River (became Mudhoney), were. All AiC fans also know about this. They still played Queen Of The Rodeo and Social Parasite well into the Facelift area.
I would add Skinyard, Soundgarden and the Melvins to helping form the Seattle music scene they were all early contributors. Mother Love Bone had a glam sound as well. Alice In Chains was just the first successful band from Seattle coming out of the late 80’s
Ummm, MLB didn't become Soundgarden, no member switches between the two. And Green River also became Mother Love Bone, so it's quite incorrect to say those two were the first.
We have to remember the only band to ever come out of the tacoma Washington area before grunge was HEART so what Heart was doing in the 1980s would have influenced everyone around town including MalfunKtion and later Mother Love Bone.
One the all time greats one band grunge rock can actually be proud of the one grunge band that had technical skills and true song writing abilities

So aic was glam, they have been around in some form or another since the early 80's.....AND there was a dude who could say he taught Geoff Tate, Ann Wilson, and Layne Staley to sing, what a legend. This was a crazy educational episode.
Slayer had the glam look for a short while
I fucking miss him what a fucking icon
Great stuff on AIC, but who and what track is being used for the backing track, the lead is smoking.
hey its a wide and wild road that brings priceless chemistries together, that's why i think songwriters and musicians should never get to distracted by what is popular at the time and just focus on doing whatever comes to them, you realy cant limit a brilliant artist, they do whats in there imagination, atleast i think that's what they should do anyways!
What's the music playing in the background?
I always thought AIC sounded like they had more 80s metal influence than other grunge bands.
Bands like Soundgarden, PJ, STP, Nirvana sounded more 70s influenced.
Can you do a video about Second Coming?
They started as glam (Poison, Motley Crue), did tour with thrash metal band (Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer) became popular as grunge (Nirvana, Pearl Jam)...
Important thing for a band is to develop. We should be thankful Alice in chains developed their music and itself
I would love to hear some of this music
