It was one of his first big commissions. He had only made one full scale sculpture before, yet he made one of the most beautiful and moving sculptures in history. And unbelievably, he was only 24 years old.
In this video, I tell you the whole story about this masterpiece by Michelangelo.
I was "lucky"to have gone there before the protecting glass was put around the sculpture!! I spent hours there just looking and crying at the beauty of it.......
ive just returned from rome, stood only for a short while as i was overcome with grief. it truly is a sculture that all people must view. the detail is frightening and amazing
The most disappointing and frustrating thing was to see this Pieta in person at St. Peter's but not be able to truly experience it since it is kept within a bullet- and damage-proofed plastic casing. It is also up against the wall in an alcove. As such, you cannot walk around it and experience the Pieta in full. This was done to prevent further damage. Why do some humans always ruin it for everybody?
I felt the same disappointment on a recent visit to St. Peters. We couldn’t get close to this masterpiece because of the crowds that gather and stay to take in it’s magnificence. It is elevated though, which gave us the opportunity to get some very good pictures above the crowd. Even the pictures themselves exude a sense of majesty and awe.
No respect for art. Beliefs that art is evil.
I was able to fully view it at age 12 at The 1964 World’s Fair in 1964 and still have a small perfect model of it that says “The 1964 World’s Fair”. I’ve seen both Elvis and The Beatles and loved it but truly seeing The Pieta WAS better ✝️♥️♥️♥️🙏
I went on a Vatican tour in 2019 and the amount of art was overwhelming. When my eyes hit this statue I felt a visceral impact completely unlike anything else I experienced on that trip. In that moment I felt the immense sorrow and beauty of the human condition expressed in perfect balance.
The Pieta is borrowed from Venus holding the wounded Adonis.
It is hard to find words to describe the beauty & sadness this sculpture evokes. ❤
Very fine analysis and detailed description. It's a near-miracle in my book that it's so lifelike. Few men or women in history had the ability to do this.
This sculptur doe,s not need to be analysed it speaks for itself you can only look at in stunned silence and wonder how is possible that this was created by a man

At 12 I was awstruck! NY Worlds fair! It was shipped over. Most beautiful sculpture of all times!❤
I was blessed as a 12 year old on class trip to New York worlds fair in 1860's. We were on a conveyor belt that went all the way around it. It is gigantic! It is amazing & I was awstruck. It is gorgeous,every vein in visable. The most beautiful work of are of all times! I will never forget the feelings invoked when looked at it.what a beautiful tribute to our Lord & his mom. ❤🎉 today is June 21sr 2024 & I😢 am almost 73 but will never forget!

The world’s most famous work of art is, undoubtedly, Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”. However, in my opinion, the “Mona Lisa” isn’t the greatest work of art. THIS IS!!!, as long as you can compare a painting to a sculpture!. That someone could create this out of a lump of rock seems to me completely & utterly beyond belief!. No wonder that in his lifetime Michelangelo was known as “il Divino”, the divine one. The Renaissance artist and art critic Giorgio Vasari called the “Pieta” a miracle when he first saw it. How could anybody possibly want to disagree with him?.

I acquired a piece of marble from the Carrera, Quarry and I carved with it, and what a joy it is to work with it is by far the most beautiful material for a sculptor

WOOWWWW!!!! Absolutely fascinating!!!! What an awesome video Carel, thank you so much!!! When I lived in Florence, my art history teacher was quite condescending of all the undocumented stories associated with Michelangelo BUT they sure make for fascinating listening. Yes the attack on the Pieta was very big news in Australia at the time, as you can imagine... I was only a child but I remember the shocking news reports. Long before I ever studied anything at all about art history I had one of the most powerful experiences in my life in seeing the Pieta for the first time ... I gasped out loud and was struck dumb, tears streamed down my face, I was breathless!! In all my travels and studies ever since I don't believe I've ever seen anything to quite match it ... maybe Bernini's Daphne & Appollo? But no as that doesn't contain the pain, the love, the depth of suffering inherent in the human condition projected by the Pieta! I've had many wonderfully moving reactions to art, but I think this one takes the cake.

It’s by far the most exquisite, graceful, divine sculpture I’ve ever experienced…Even just for that going to St Peter’s was worth it…
It is truly the most extraordinary experience, to see the human condition expressed in such a way is beyond words ,the beauty is beyond words, Mary is young looks the same age as her Son it's as if she knows her destiny is to lose him

I think this sculpture is supposed to be on the floor. So you can see all the beauty. Such a shame that it cannot be seen from up close.
Just by looking at pictures of it there is that awe. All those emotions, and coming from a stone.

The Man Who Vandalized The Michelangelo's Pieta Was Named Laszlo Toth
Have you ever wondered why nobody today can do a sculpture of such perfection to the human body as claimed Michael Angelo had achieved in his works ?
That's because nobody carved or sculpted these marble statues and are in fact real dead flash frozen bodies. .
They never explain how they get the marble to change the colour where blood has pooled !!!
The marble is brittle yet they carved folded clothing and coloured the eyes. This would be impossible to colour the marble too.
True masters don’t exist anymore. Especially at twenty two. Many live into their eighties and never reach master status. Art in America is treated as a third rate profession. Think of the talent being wasted in American. We are more occupied with iPads, computer, and God help me- sports.
