Benjamin Rothrock Sort if true. They have never officially lost one to enemy fire, but over the past 20 years about 40ish(Sorry Wikipedia numbers) have been disabled. There was one incident where one or two got wrecked by friendly fire from AH-64 missiles.
@Benjamin Rothrock Almost. The only Challenger 2 to be destroyed was a friendly fire incident in 2003. As far as I can find, at least 10 Abrams have been damaged beyond repair in the US Army/Marines (all in the Iraq War), 5 in Iraqi forces and a few more in the Saudi Arabian army during the Yemen civil war. Other Abrams have been destroyed in friendly fire incidents also.
Meanwhile on Wikipedia "During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the Challenger 2 tanks suffered no tank losses to Iraqi fire, although one was penetrated by an Improvised explosive device (IED). This was, at the time, unprotected by Dorchester armour. The driver was injured. In one encounter within an urban area, a Challenger 2 came under attack from irregular forces with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. The driver's sight was damaged and while attempting to back away under the commander's directions, the other sights were damaged and the tank threw its tracks entering a ditch. It was hit by 14 rocket propelled grenades from close range and a MILAN anti-tank missile.[32] The crew survived, safe within the tank until it was recovered for repairs, the worst damage being to the sighting system. It was back in operation six hours later. One Challenger 2 operating near Basra survived being hit by 70 RPGs in another incident.[33] "

Challengers in Armored Warfare, nearly impenetrable from the front, Challengers in War Thunder, penned by everything...hmmmmm.
Their modelling as far as armor seems closer to real-life than War Thunder. There's too much downgrading stuff for balancing in War Thunder.
To be fair, armored warfare felt like a pixel hunting game at tier 7 and above. it wasn't fun, it was who gets better gun RNG. I too would like for the MBT's at top tier to actually feel like they have armor, I think gaijin are overdoing the downgrading a little too much, but it's still an overall more enjoyable experience to me than pixel hunting.
war thunder is made by Russians who can not help themselves and have to take the opportunity to make Britain seem bad, like showing the Churchill with bad mobility

The challenger 2 is so great that it was widely exported to every country in the world, and totally didn't need Rhinemetall to come in and save the tank from itself, and wasn't totally penned by a RPG-7 injuring the driver. Nearly all commonwealth countries have Challenger 2 as their MBT because it's so good 🤡

And that inicident with the driver, it was going over a ridge, it didn't have the ERA kit on it, and it was shot practically into the bottom of the hull. But if you also read the rest of that story, no one died, and the tank was fine.

bmused55 you really need to look up how physics work when a kinetic energy round penetrates a tank. It doesn’t have hit the ammo to cook off.
Also, the round did pass directly through the ammo on the kill cam, no doubt about it. Straight through the ready rack in front of the loaders knees. The ammo didn't change color like it should have, but the dev server is filled with bugs, so this doesn't surprise me much.
@@wilso845 And Gaijin need to look up the effects of a penetration on two part ammo. They also need to look up the proper spec for the Challenger. It is not the super fragile POS Gaijin make it out to be.
@@wilso845 Perhaps you can explain why the Leo and Abrams have blow-out panels that work and yet the British are still yet to have received wet ammo stowage, it is impossible to detonate solid metal and the charge packs are stored in water decreasing there ability to catch fire or explode.
They made Leo 2A5 really powerful so they can justify every nerf until the tank is worse than a Loltractor.

honestly the Chally 2 would be fine if the maps in War Thunder weren't CQC focused. I can see it working well on maps like Maginot and Fulda, but small maps shouldnt even be in rotation for Tier 6 and 7 tanks. They follow completely different design philosophy and doctorine from WW2 tanks and should have their own maps designed.
Stupid thing is, i get large maps like maginot and kursk all the time in my tier 3 and 4 tanks, which is a true pain in the ass, but never in top tier somehow

My biggest problem with these modern tanks in War Thunder is that the devs are just guessing and balancing the tanks from thin air. No one except top brass really knows what the armor values on these MBT's is. It's still top secret, and could be double what Gaijin put in the game for all they know.
Take the Challenger for argument's sake. The Chobham armour on that (and the Chieftan and Abrams) has been classified for the past 60 years... No one has a clue. Also, I was under the impression that the Chally 2 was incredibly well armoured..
@@Stefan-bu6ms It is. It uses an upgraded version of the Chobham armour called Dorchester armour. New Abrams uses it as well. I think the Leo also uses Chobham so these in-game armour values don't really make sense.
To be fair. The Leopard 2A5 *is* the one tank we do have the values for. The Swedish military accidentally leaked a dossier comparing it to the Strv122. I'll see if I can find it for you.

@@prestoncampbell7095 The Abrams absolutely does not use Dorchester. The very early models used Chobham, but they were upgraded to an American-designed depleted uranium composite from the M1A1 onwards. Incidentally, the new Abrooms we're getting is this very model.

The fact remains challengers armor is good. If you try say otherwise it's as stupid as saying the tiger armor wasn't good because it fought against t34s because it's 1930s tech.....

I think that's because we don't know the true abilities of the Chobham armour as what it truly made of is classified. But I agree one of the best MBTs in the world, I believe one survived 70+ RPGs rounds and the only one to be destroyed in combat was killed by another Challenger 2.

To be fair UFP of the Chally 2 can stop pretty much any round thrown at it, which makes it a lot easier to find a hull down spot since you only need to cover your lower glacis
as long as they don't shoot anywhere in the middle or just wipe you out through the turret.

From what I understand, lots of Challenger IIs in Afghanistan were upgraded with ERA and composite for the lower glasus to protect against rpgs and IEDs. It could definitely use that as a researchable add-on armor modification

Its missing the smoke screen from the exhaust system. It would at least give it a chance to shoot and move under cover, instead we just get smoke grenades.

The Black Knight version of the CR2 isn’t even that good compared to Rheinmettals proposal. All Black Knight offers is an active protection system and some new sights. Rheinmettals proposal offers a new L55 120mm smooth bore gun, 1,500 hp power pack , new sights, new turret and a new digital fire control system...
The issue comes with maps. The Chally is a long range, hull down sniper and it’s damn good at that job. If maps such as Maginot and European Province would be more common for high tier then the Challenger would be far more effective. The maps in top tier right now simply don’t cater to the Challenger at this moment
The main problem with this tank, is the fact it's in its bog standard state.
This tank gets modified depending on what type of terrain it's in, for example in the cities it has a street fighter upgrade, which see it have extra Armour on the hull, sides, side of turret and the big weak spot... There are multiple upgrades for this tank with various Armour upgrades, it's a shame you don't see that street fighter upgrade, because it's cool as f*ck and would be ideal for these maps.
Fingers crossed one of the upgraded Armour challenger 2 gets added.
It's also a shame they decided to not put the Leopard 2A6 smoothbore Rheinmetall 120 mm gun, but man there are so many various upgrades it's had for all kinds of scenarios... Even the new black night version that came out last year would be cool as f*ck with its active protection system... "Systems allow the tank to detect incoming anti-tank missiles or armour penetrating rounds and automatically launches a counter-explosive to neutralise the threat."

So they're going to add updated/ more modern versions of these tanks in the future, but once they add those then what? There's no more modern tanks to add, unless they add more IFVs, which I'd love to see.
They should have focused on more, less modern vehicles because once you get to this level there's hardly any data to reliably represent the tanks stats.
NO the chally 2 never fired L23A1 as the round was fazed out during chally 1s service. chally 2 used L26 jericho for a little bit before was replaced by L27A1 Charm 3 and later L28A1.

The problem with warthunder's armor model is that it doesn't take into account the suspension as added armor in the sides.
Tactics PHLY....behind cover, spot, push out, fire, pull back, reload. A tank is not supposed to get hit in general, thats why real life crews always move after shooting, Incoming shells cannot change flight path if you are not on the same spot anymore

only the composition and exact values are classified, but there are tests and estimates and the chalenger mk 1 is pin point accurate, not sure about this new one
There are a handful of military used Sims that have rough estimations. These match that.

I do know however it should have ESS and a composite battle pack, that unlike the challenger 1 there's no excuse not to have available from day one.

Challenger 2 was designed with long range desert combat in mind. The idea was to have smaller vehicles (like the warrior) engage in brawling warfare, while the Challenger acts as a long distance tank killer.

One thing I've noticed in war thunder which is a big problem with war thunder is a lot of the weak spots on tanks wouldn't actually be weak spots in real life due to the mechanical parts of the tank and other things. Especially around the gun on the challenger 2, in real life you have the stabalisers and some elevation mechanisms which are heavy duty meaning a round going into that area would most likely end up stuck or not fully penetrating.
Absolutely no one has mentioned the fact that there's not a single kinetic round in game that can penetrate the Challenger 2 Upper Front plate. It's kind of the Hidden monster of the patch this thing is super tanky

while i don't want to start an argument about chally armour, what i will say the turret rotation is botched to hell 9 seconds to do 360 degrees and it should be given the ability to fire L27A1 (Basically a improved L26 which has a larger length to diameter ratio making it more effective) aside from that i don't see the chally having too many problems give it these two things and it will actually become pretty scary imo

The nicest thing is that the TAM for speed, armament and versatility is eaten raw the Challenger 2.
The gun breach weakness shouldn't be there, it should be a >500mm composite plate in front of the breach so all the crew should be fine if it gets hit there.

I don't expect too much accuracy in this game, but this isn't even in the same cricket field of the real tank in terms of armor, the whole point of the tank is you have a fat chance of penning it.
I think they got the Leopard 2A5 wrong, Its frontal armor is way to strong compared to the other tanks.

Well although it currently sucks on the dev server I can take heart in the fact that only one Challenger II has ever been lost in combat and it was another Challenger II that killed it, another took a MILAN and several RPGs (-7 model I believe, so maybe not the biggest threat) and was in combat again hours later whilst another spent hours being pelted with over 70 RPGs (again, -7 because Iraq) while stuck in a ditch, again surviving more or less undamaged. Take this vs the Abrams which is basically Pre-Wet-Rack-Sherman-Mk.II on the Likely To Ignite chart.
I think the current problem on the dev server is that the BV is not modelled, so it is currently not performing at its best. TEA! COLONIALISM! FNAHFNAH!
Same with the M1A1 Abrams before the IED scourge. Friendly fire incident and no crew injuries (minus soiled trousers) and back in service in a few days

@@alexhohl8530 kidding right? There was a US Abrams destroyed by an engine fire when the crew couldn't put it out, neither could the infantry with them during an ambush in Baghdad. The Abrams took an RPG to an exhaust vent which killed the engine and started a fuel fire. Abrams being taken out like that was literally the reason TUSK was developed.
@@steweygrrr The fact that only one Chally 2 has ever been taken out isn't very impressive considering the Chally 2 has barely seen any service at all since it's introduction. By that logic, the Ariete is superior to the Chally, since not a single Ariete has ever been lost.
Phly I am sure you already know this (and if not you will never read this), but the fragmentation damage in x-ray view in the protection analysis does not work correctly on the dev server (which is why the shots didn't seem to make any damage). It's in the "Known Bugs" list
I feel like the Chally 2 hull-down with its gun fully depressed aiming at you will be near impossible to kill.

Ahh good, can carry on my play through of hard mode for the time being. Having a good record in the thing is an object of pride, as you got there through skill, not just having a better tank. It would be nice if they gave it it's ESS and Battle pack though, and sorted out the fuel fires, and the suspension and regenerative steering and maybe lap loading for a maxed crew.
Besides, now that things have already moved past it, they may suddenly find the turret rotation speed of the Vickars 7/2 and be able to add that. Then all Britain needs to be competitive will be helicopters like the Lynx, decent AA like the Sabre, a light tank like the Scorpion, the Javelins proper payload, flight model & missiles and a supersonic jet like the FD-2 and they'll be up to scratch with certain nations two updates ago lol.
well if it was a challenger 2 with dorchester, dorchester 2, or TES armour upgrades, it would be a different story

Yeah because it's not even equipped for battle it's missing everything and because it armour is still classified it hits problems.
@@samuel10125 if it was equipped with the battle kit the mobility would be even worse, like, considerably worse. Having good armour at top tier isn't that relevant when you can get flanked twice before you see the enemies, so better let it stay like this for now.

Patiently waiting for the Leclerc to be added to the game. The AMX-40 seems like a decent tank, but it doesn't compare to the others, especially since they're all more modern.
They really screwed the CR2 over, getting taken out by a TAM (a Argentine/German joint project 105mm gun) In one incident a CR2 was hit over 70 times by RPGs and it was still rolling with scratches, another 1 Milan ATGM and 14 RPGS still functioning under it's own power with just optic damage, another was damaged by a IED resulting in serious injuries to the driver and minor to another crew member but the vehicle was repairable and improvements have been made, another CR2 was struck by an RPG 29 it went through the lower plate ERA took half the foot of the Driver who was still able to drive the vehicle to an Aid point (not a good outcome obviously) but the tabj was still operable...
The only time a CR2 has actually been destroyed was a friendly fire incident in Iraq and a Breach explosion on a training exercise...
This tank in game should be better represented IMO not as a biased one but one that's supported by RL incidents, also there's no BV modelled wtf

the thing is in real life its not really designed for urban combat. its a long range sniper. gaijin needs to work on tank gameplay and modes. i really like to see a rb or sb co-op mode being added. like gulf war scenario.

@@rayhan_2k841 relax dude. i said the main purpose of the design was not for urban combat but later on it was upgraded for urban combat as well. its not as good as something like merkava but its capable.
I think the problem is in the highly classified module armor system and how it is customizable for the theater. They can't implement that into the game and they are using guesstimated armor values. I find that this is underperforming expectations and that the Leo 2A5 is over performing.

@@christians.597Yes, and the values we do know are wrong in game, which is amazing. We also know the Japanese trials of their own tanks yet Gaijin decided they were wrong. We also know the perforation values of many NATO shells, which are underperforming in game, and we know the performance of Soviet guns from WWII, which are overperforming in game

I like that WT adds new maps. However... you'd think they'd at least google pictures of what Alaska looks like, or name the map something else. Alaska has no skyscrapers, and art-deco is rare.
