In Japanese culture, to smile was seen as some sort of deficiency. But times are changing. With increasing international business the Japanese are forced to conform. Entrepreneurs are setting up schools where Japanese learn how to express themselves and smile at foreigners. Results can be mixed...

Cool documentary. I was in Japan last year and I noticed no one on the street would smile back at me (customer service was always very friendly though, but this would be a job requirement). As soon as i returned to Australia everyone would smile back. I am in malaysia and they too smile back. Also i in Japan if my girlfriend waved at a small child the parents would freeze up and freak out and try to ignore what was happening. Every other country i have been to people try to encourage their child to wave back and be social. Japan, which is well documented, has a social skills and acknowledgement issue - i do remember walking past a house and the persons front wall was a rock climbing wall, i complemented the owner on it and he was happy i was impressed by it, he had his small kids and my girlfriend waved to them and they didnt know how to deal with it - an hour later we walkes past on the other side of the.street and the owner and kids obviously noticed us and we waving frantically at us an so happy. Basically i think lack of confidence, experience and social acceptance causes many japanese to be socially awkward and restricted l.

I don't find it weird, in many eastern European countries including mine we don't smile much either, at least not in public. It's just a cultural thing, we're smile if we genuinely happy and don't fake it. If we see a stranger smiling at us on the street we see him as suspicious.

@@-_Somebody_ This is why ignorance… So many people just can’t put themselves in others’ feet.
If you’re going to say something, be aware that you DON’T fully understand the situation the group of people are in; in this case you don’t know Japanese society enough to find a reasonable justification for this concept to exist.
All I can tell you now is, just understand that these other people may not be in the same situation, or even world as you, you rich, pure, happy child.

As so many people I now have it on their bucket list to go to Japan someday it genuinely sounds like a good place to be. @@-_Somebody_I know, but we still take so many things for granted: Having the right to feel anything whenever we want, being allowed to make simple mistakes without being punished. Not having to live in constant paranoia and terror alone is such a privilege to some individuals.
On the other hand, if you have to go through such things, like being hit for smiling at the wrong time, being laughed at for making the smallest of mishaps, societal pressure is nothing to scoff at for ordinary individuals.
So yeah, you may not be rich, but you’re not in a prison of societal expectations that force you to act accordingly only.
