    Damn this is so refreshing. In an ocean full of seniors that bought themselves a mansion on water and call themselves sailors and young couples that say they renov their boat but really they just pay for every little things, this was just perfect ! Young couple with a good small boat and nice DIY skills ! Let's go turtle =)

      We debated on wether or not to show it, but we wanted to be completely honest and show every aspect of our trip and of ourselves. We've always kept a loaded shotgun in our home and felt no different about keeping one on our boat. Thank you for your compliments! We appreciate you watching our videos!

      Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment with your questions. In the case of sailing to Mexico or any other country where we know that firearms are not allowed, we would not take them. We have respect for other countries and their choice in laws and will do our part to obey their instructions when visiting. It is always a good idea to research the laws of your destination, before traveling there. Before we left for the The Bahamas, one of the things we researched was their firearm laws. We found some helpful information concerning entering The Bahamas with a firearm, and also good information about leaving and re-entering the U.S. with a firearm.
      Leaving the USA with a firearm has no legal ramifications unless the items are "export restricted" (typically military weapons) Re-entering the USA however, requires proof of ownership in order to avoid taxation and import paperwork. (proving you owned the gun before leaving the country and then bringing it back) and it requires a specific customs declaration paper. (Form 4457 from the CBP) You can also use this form as documentation to show customs when you get to the Bahamas. They will want a full list of each gun (limit of 3) and specific counts of ammunition for each gun. You must be able to security lock the guns on board and they must remain on board at all times. If you end up leaving your boat in the Bahamas to fly home, you will need to deliver the firearms and ammunition to a local police department for safe keeping while you are gone. We took not only a 12 Ga. shot gun, as you probably saw in the video, but also a 357 revolver. We got nothing but pleasant smiles from officials when checking into the Bahamas and never felt any negative vibes. We have lived in states where we are able to carry concealed on a daily bases and it felt only natural to take guns with us on our trip. We were very appreciative of the Bahamas for being welcoming to not only us, but also our rights to protect ourselves.
      Each country might have different rules, so just research before going. Thanks again for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment. Hope this could be of some help to you.

    I'm writing separate comments because they're separate issues..I'm sorry if this is improper CZcams etiquette.
    You've done such incredible work on your boat..it's amazing. You have single handedly increased the value of the Ericsson 26 without a doubt. And your boat..you could probably have an auction and get twice the value just because it's your boat and you did the work. The sugar scoop stern...I've often wondered if that could be done. You proved it...it can be done! Dude..I'm extremely handy and creative with mechanical things, and you blow me away. I'm talking about repairing things, improving things, using a part for something it was not designed for and it's awesome, etc. MacGyver stuff but real life. I'm in awe. Cheers.
    If you and the guy from Sailing Uma ever got together you'd be able to design the sickest boat ever in the history of boat design.
    Where does you anchor locker drain to? They make..as I'm sure you know..stainless steel drain..um..things that screw onto the outside of your boat. You make sure you've found the lowest point in the shelf inside the locker. You drill a hole outside film inside the locker and attach the stainless steel drain piece onto where the drilled hole is. They work really well and it makes it did that you don't have to drain the chain locker into the bilge.

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  Před 3 lety

      Hahaha Thank you so much for the compliments! When we sold Turtle we did get twice what we paid for it, but only 1/2 of what we put into it. I suspect we could have done better if our channel had launched by the time we had put her up for sale…also rushing to get the boat sold just as hurricane season was beginning, didn't do us any favors. To answer your question about the anchor locker drain, the boat originally had a small drain hose out near the anchor locker bottom, like you described. When I removed the anchor locker pan to create a larger space for our anchor and rode, this drain system was naturally eliminated. I installed a new floor pan in the anchor locker that angled forward with its lowest point right at the bow stem just above waterline. At this point I drilled a drain hole directly through the bow stem so that every drop in the anchor locker quickly drained out with no potential of any water to ever reach the bilge. This also created a watertight crash bulkhead for the first 3 feet of the bow.

    The exhaust water temp alarm is brilliant. I find it amazing that in 2020 the best impeller design still relies on a rubber (I know, they're usually neoprene) impeller. Rubber is an old silly term so it's fitting for this comment. With so much at stake, the health, or should I say the death of your marine engine, a silly $20 rubber impeller is all that stands between a healthy cool engine and an engine with a warped cylinder head or worse. And you're right, the engine temp gauge doesn't work to prevent engine damage, it's too late. All marine engines that rely on rubber impellers for bringing cooling water to the engine should have some sort of alarm like you showed for when the impeller shits the bed. 99.99% of the time, if you replace the impeller as per manufacturer specs you'll have no problems. But when you have a boat that doesn't get used a lot, maintenance schedules get...complicated. I really like your approach to everything on your boat. I'm very handy, I do everything myself...i never have anyone fix anything except standing rigging, but I'm learning from you! Thank you

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the comment, we treat our boats very much like airplanes; replacing or rebuilding important systems long before they expire. I typically replace the rubber impeller every spring, but like you, I still don't trust it. I debated between the temperature alarm and a flow sensor alarm, which can also be installed in-line with the raw water flow. The flow sensor alarm would probably give earlier warning, but has a real potential for a clog from debris. In the end, we were happy with the added sense of security. Thanks again for watching our videos! We really appreciate it and love it when we can connect with our viewers!

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, so many cool upgrades, love the water maker design, that was one of my biggest concerns when we started planning our trip to the Bahamas on our Dana 24, having enough water and knowing that to purchase water in the bahamas can get expensive, so we purchased a Rainman Portable Watermaker, great little unit, takes up very little space, is powered by a honda engine and makes 37 gallons of water per hour, the only other big change we did, was do away with the marine head and all the plumbing and installed a composting toilet....

      Thanks for watching our videos and for taking the time to leave us a good comment. We needed to go with small solar panels because we din't have an enough space available for larger sized panels, and we didn't want a large contraption built above to cockpit. It also meant that if one panels got shaded, it only stoped a small portion of solar energy instead of losing an entire large pannel's worth. We got plenty of energy and never felt limited on power.

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  Před 5 lety +1

      Thank you! The hinged security bars on the forward hatch are secured with an all stainless marine-grade padlock and retains enough size in the hatch opening that we can still crawl through for egress or to shove a spinnaker through the hatch etc. It's a pretty simple addition, but gives us both peace of mind both on and off the boat to be able to leave the hatch open and still have security. I welded it out of aluminum scrapes that were lying around the shop, but it could be built out of any material a person has available to them and has the ability to work with. I could have just as easily cut it out of 3/4'' marine-grade plywood coated with epoxy, paint, etc. Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving us a comment! Really well thought out systems for the real world practically of cruising and nicely explained. Well done, sir, and especially well adapted for such a compact platform. I especially like the swim step addition. If you haven’t already, I’d love to see how you built it and added it, as I’ve often thought you’d want to do that for a lot of older boats, but I’ve also wondered how you could do it and still have it work with a self steering gear set up so you have a back up if you lose your autopilot.

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  Před 5 lety

      Yes, we do have a video showing how we built the swim platform. We contemplated that same question during our design build phase, and decided that there was not enough space for a wind-vane with such a small sugar scoop. I've seen it done on larger boats where there's room for an off center wind-vane installation that still gives space to make the swim platform useable, but that was not practical for us. Instead we chose to carry a back up autopilot. Thank you so much for watching our videos and taking the time to leave us a comment with your thoughts. We appreciate you being part of our sailing journey.

    For the water maker. It's something I have given some thought about for when I go trans ocean but for now I don't have much use. I was concerned about the running costs though. If you're finding you need to change the prefilter every few days is that meaning you spend around 200 dollars a month for maintenance? I looked up the prefilters on westmarine and they're 169 for 6. If I'm looking up the right ones. Any advice or knowledge would be much appreciated. Thanks. Great tour!

    • @SailingTurtle
      @SailingTurtle  Před 6 lety

      SORRY it took so long to respond, hope it's not too late for our advice... You are definitely looking at the wrong ones. haha ...You should only be paying like $3.00 a piece for the filters. The watermaker we used on our boat takes any standard under the sink filter cartridge in the same size and micron, as long as they are synthetic instead of the paper filter material. They are totally REUSABLE as long as you take care cleaning them properly. We sorta learned that the hard way. The instructions said to toss the filter overboard on a tether and allow it to self-clean, but it doesn't work if you are in water that is murky looking....like in Florida. Once we got to The Bahamas and the water was crystal clear, it was never a problem. We talk a little bit about the filters and cleaning them/needing to buy new ones in these videos. Check them out if you'd like.
