  • The Hopewell Method, Purdy Prescription (calculation), Stiller method and several abbreviated and short cuts to those mentioned, these can all be found by visiting the various rimfire oriented sites.
I chose to give the Hopewell Method a try with the V22 and a Harrell Tuner.
I did not find a source for who Hopewell is, how long ago the method was developed or whether it was tested by engineers or gunsmiths in the know. A few shortened versions were touted. I decided to take the long hand version to the range.
    1. Use the quality ammo that will be used in match competition.
    2. Set tuner to "0", fire two shots.
    3. Turn tuner 25 clicks, one complete revolution and fire 2 shots at same POA.
    4. Continue this until "100" is reached. This will comprise a 10 shot group, all at the same POA.
    5. Repeat steps for "100" to "200".
    6. Repeat steps for "200" to "300".
    7. Repeat Steps for "300" to "400".
    8. Repeat Steps for "400 to "500".
This completes five, 10 shot groups.
    9. Look; for the group that displays the least amount of vertical stringing.
    10. Example: The "0" to "100" group shows the least vertical stringing.
    11. Starting at setting "0", shoot 2 five shot groups, each 5 shot group having its own POA (bull).
    12. Repeat at settings; "025", "050", "075" and "100".
    13. Pick the setting with the best average vertical group size.
    14. Example: Setting "100" showed the best average vertical group size.
    15. Setting "100" selected: Shoot five shot groups, individual POA bulls for settings "90", "95", "100", "105" and "110".
    16. Select the setting with the least vertical stringing.
    17. Example: Setting "90" shows the smallest vertical group.
    18. Next, shoot a five shot group for each of the following settings:
    "87", "89", "90", "91" and "93".
    19. In this example setting "93" has shown the least vertical stringing (and the smallest group size), and can be declared as being the "sweet spot" for this barrel with tuner, with this lot ammunition.
    20. Having basic understanding of barrel harmonics, sinusoidal wave characteristics, resonance frequency and importance of nodal location as projectile leaves the muzzle makes for a more enjoyable experience when working with a tuner.

I have never gone to such a degree with my rifles. I have done 00, 25, 50, 75 in the past because like you I tune outside in the wind. I would do like you did in this video if I could shoot inside without the wind. Good job sir!

I have read 2-3 discussion threads on different sites where recommendation is to simply start at "200" and 'spin' to "300". It was not stated, but I suppose the assumption is most beneficial settings show up in this range (?). I am glad I did not do that.....I would have missed setting "93" 😲.
How are you KC? I haven't heard from you lately.

      Hello sir,
I have been taking advantage of the good weather to practice. I too start @ 00 and go to each +100 and then go through the +25s until I am happy. With my eyes and the silver tuner I have I find the marks too small to see. But after this video I think I may take my reading glasses and start doing it.@@22rimfireultra67

If you notice on the video, I cut some small pieces of black electrical tape to aid with quick 'line up' of the tuner markings. It works very well. Removing a couple of hours later leaves no mark or adhesive residue.@@karencollins9363

I would suggest tuning at 100 yards on ammo that shows low SD and vertical stringing. On the video I did with the Lapua test center, it was demonstrated off camera "tune-able" ammo that will achieve results but explained by the specialist what ammo will tune. Ill follow up a video on this, but their is a false notion that any match 22lr can be tuned and done at 50m/yards

Kenny, I am not sure I have the energy to do this again at 100 yards 😕.
The tuner for me is a temporary novelty. I'll get a better feel for things after some accuracy shooting. I did watch your Lapua test center video. I'll have to watch it again. And look forward to the 'follow-up' video you plan!
Ultimately, for my type of self enjoyment, non-formal competition shooting, a tuner-less barrel with random lot quality ammunition suits me fine. (for now).
However, it is nice to give the Harrell Tuner a test drive to try and see what the top Bench Rest folks experience.
      Thanks for the comment! 🙃

@22rimfireultra67 ahhh Yeah im with you. Its tremendous amount of work. I've been retesting tuner devices and gathering solid info on how they perform. So far, Ive concluded these 22lr rifles seem to have affect on 25-26 .800" contour barrels. These larger barrels or shorter ones like the V22 require 1.5lbs and major adjustments throughout the barrel (moving 1-2 inches) to effect accuracy. I was using a large axle shaft bearing stop for this lol.
Overall, your rifles shoot as good as the others ive built. If you wanna give a single shot a try, hit my shop up
