Ackkhhhhnowledged! Red Alert was fun
It's worth extracting the music tracks from the Redneck Rampage CD because there are some good tracks on there - all "cowpunk" related.
That CD is responsible for bringing to my attention The Beat Farmers who have become one of my favourite bands since then - and all because of their track "Baby's Liquored Up" on the CD.
Unfortunately, their drummer and sometimes lead singer, Country Dick Montana, died of a heart attack on stage in 1995 (before Redneck Rampage was released) but there are some good videos of them on YT.
They split days after Country Dick's death (though there have been a few reunions since) but the best way to describe them is a cross between country rock and British pub rock - but a very capable set of musicians, and worth checking out.
Thanks Lee for your great service and video. I wondered how you were going to smash all your CD’s into the RPIV…😂!
Have a great day!
man i love red alert. defintely one of my all time favorites.
Very Helpful
Thank you!
Thanks for the new Tutorial, Lee! Very easy to follow as usual and always nice to see footage of some old games. What are the chances you might make a tutorial on how to set up some games in a library with the Launchbox feature mentioned in this video? Curious to see how that works.
What memories! That time when laptops had real keyboards, with full size cursor keys!
I am too young to have known DOS for more than a year, i'm so lost with those commands, you have a lot to remember
I am 53 and born in 1970. Unless you were a real hardcore fan of PC's and could afford a PC in the 80's you were not into that scene. Only in the late 80's did PC's start hittign the mainstream when the price of them started coming down. Playing games like Moonbuggy using DOS or the M$ DOS was my first foray into the PC world. This was in the middle 90's using an old Intel 8088. Slow as heck. Then i messed around with the 286's, 386's 486's and finally an Intel Pentium in the middle 90's. At that point windows 95 was out and DOS was well on its way out.
They are pretty much the same as linux shell commands, but not quite as capable. They are far fewer in number, though, which gives us a chance! Note that I'm on this bus because I don't like mousing around in windows, when there is a far more capable word processor available in VDE, a DOS test "editor" that edits multiple files at once, THAT is my killer application; why I'm setting up a DOS-something to handle it. As a user, I am a long-time DOS user, so I've got some room to play...
Mechwarrior 2 was so close to playable on Pi 4... I'm going to definitely try this. It's either going to work... or a long wait to try again on Pi 6
I can tell lee is having fun with ai 😂
Recently got a hold of a dell wyse with a j5005 that is going to replace my file server, which is currently a HP T620. Now I'm wondering if the T620 (quad core low power amd chip) could be setup as a retro device
Yes, but it depends what you are trying to emulate and what type of GPU is in it. I have a few of these "think clients" myself including a quad core Dell Wyse 5060 with an AMD GPU that is okay for a bit of retro.
I don't have a T620 but have a look at "Phil's Computer Lab" as he has done a huge amount of retro stuff over the years and I am sure he's done videos on the T620 running MS-DOS and/or early Windows.
I believe version 0.81 of Dosbox Staging has support for Voodoo 1 graphics. I wonder if the Pi 5 can handle it? Maybe test Lara Croft with Voodoo? 🤔
Thanks for the video! I'm happy to have DOS back! I will try to use an old Ham Radio packet software. Do you think it's work on a Pi Zero 2 board?
It’s similar to a 3 so it may work. Although I have tried many Pi 3 images that didn’t support the Zero 2w
Been struggling for two days to get Windows 95 installed on Dosbian, after i downloaded it the second i saw it released. Its been a process, but slowly, steadily, i feel like i'm getting there.
Win 3.1 runs on it perfectly fine, i'll try Chicago at some point- But moving a Windows 95 installer to a harddrive image rendered the image unreadable, so i'm back to square one on that one.
I did it on Pi 4. I didn’t do a tutorial as I had so many attempts and eventually got it working from the guide mentioned here

@@leepspvideo Yeah i've watched it, and actually got it to work on the Pi 4 back in the day! It was fairly slow and unusable though so i'm trying to get it to work on the Pi 5.
Might go back to your tutorial and see if that method still works.
Ah finally a video about the new Dosbox on the Pi5 !!! What about running Windows on it?
I believe people have run Windows 3.11 and Windows 95 within one of the versions of DOSBox, possibly dosbox-staging. But DOSBox is an "MS-DOS like environment emulator" not a full PC emulator (like Virtualbox) - so it's there to run programs that would run on top of MS-DOS, like those early versions of Windows.
Windows 2000 and beyond did not run on MS-DOS.
I did it on Pi 4. I didn’t do a tutorial as I had so many attempts and eventually got it working from the guide mentioned here

You can technically run any version of Windows built on top of DOS on this platform - that's everything before Windows 2000 (and excluding NT3 or NT4).
Hi, Lee. Thanks for the videos! I have a question: does the pi 5 run dosbian a lot better than the Pi 4? And how worse is th Pi 3 performance with dosbian?
I haven’t tried Pi 3. Pi 5 is definitely faster on some later dos games
Could I ask you what screen recording software do you prefer when recording Raspbarry Pi OS screen video?? (And/or other softwares that are helpful for creating YT content from a Pi... I want to create a Pi that I can take to my GFs house so I can make content while away from my main setup.)
I always use this Avermedia. I have had it for ages

Can you use that on a raspberry pie Zero? Also, can you run Microsoft basic on a raspberry pi?
For your first question, yes - although emulation of any type requires a lot of RAM and CPU power. I suspect it would run fine on a Pi Zero 2W but might struggle on an older Pi Zero.
For your second question, probably yes - provided it's the earlier versions of Microsoft BASIC that were built into MS-DOS versions. The final MS-DOS version was 7.x under Windows 9x but I don't know if Microsoft kept BASIC in MS-DOS that late due to them moving more to Visual Basic later on. You'd need to check on that.
I have interest in playing the PC game Grand Prix 4 on my RPi4. However, I found issues trying to install it via wine64. Maybe you could make a video installing this game on a RPi?
Do you kno if it is possible to play games ona RPi 4 through wine with a Dualshock 4 controller via bluetooth? In my case, only the touchpad works.
This is on a Pi 4

I have used the DualShock 4
With an NVME on a Pi can it be multi partitioned and different images flashed to the partitions and then booted from a boot menu?
Which boot loader SW is a good one?
I believe you need to look at an application called PINN to do Raspberry Pi multi-boot - booting from NVME or MicroSD should be no great difference in setting it up, and I believe Lee has done a video or two on this.
I can't help you any further because PINN isn't something I need to consider using - but it might well solve your issue here.
Batocera is now is on rpi 5
but does it run dBaseIII
Im interested in doing this on a pi-zero2W. Would it be a viable option? Or just do it on a pi4?
You should get reasonable results on a Pi Zero 2W. The issue with that Pi is the 512MB RAM limit and emulation always needs quite a bit of memory.
🙋
Those "Zombie Cows" mean that you were playing a censored version, created due to outrage or certification refusals of the original version, where the zombies were pedestrians or cattle. A localized German version had all splatterable wandering objects as robotic versions with black blood.
At the start it asked for a pin to unlock. I didn’t look up the pin
Does it support MT32-Pi for midi?
Try asking the creator
maybe i missed it - but why do you need the nvme drive? surely the microsd has enough space and fast enough transfer speed?
You don't "need" and NVME drive, it's just that in the longer term it is likely to be more reliable than MicroSD.
Whenever you run an operating system, the drive it's on is always being read from and written to, which is my hard drives, SSDs and NVME drives were invented.
The SD system came out of camera storage and was originally designed more for "static" storage of photographs, audio files, etc. However, SD got more reliable over the years and can be used to boot an OS from, but compared to the other types of drive it is likely to have a shorter lifespan.
SD also tends to be quite a bit slower than SSDs and NVME drives.
@@terrydaktyllus1320 i think the lifespan of an sdcard will probably be enough for an emulation box.
"faster" transfer speeds is a bit moot when coming to such old games - will they load noticeably faster off a sold state storage device that is not microsd?
@@zenmaster24I understand your point but I was simply looking at the differences between the types of media.
If you run a Linux OS on an SD, there is a lot of read and writing going on constantly, especially if you have any logging active.
I tried to get to a better comment forum, but I'm afraid I lack exposure... NOOB!
