    It's worth extracting the music tracks from the Redneck Rampage CD because there are some good tracks on there - all "cowpunk" related.
    That CD is responsible for bringing to my attention The Beat Farmers who have become one of my favourite bands since then - and all because of their track "Baby's Liquored Up" on the CD.
    Unfortunately, their drummer and sometimes lead singer, Country Dick Montana, died of a heart attack on stage in 1995 (before Redneck Rampage was released) but there are some good videos of them on YT.
    They split days after Country Dick's death (though there have been a few reunions since) but the best way to describe them is a cross between country rock and British pub rock - but a very capable set of musicians, and worth checking out.

      I am 53 and born in 1970. Unless you were a real hardcore fan of PC's and could afford a PC in the 80's you were not into that scene. Only in the late 80's did PC's start hittign the mainstream when the price of them started coming down. Playing games like Moonbuggy using DOS or the M$ DOS was my first foray into the PC world. This was in the middle 90's using an old Intel 8088. Slow as heck. Then i messed around with the 286's, 386's 486's and finally an Intel Pentium in the middle 90's. At that point windows 95 was out and DOS was well on its way out.

      They are pretty much the same as linux shell commands, but not quite as capable. They are far fewer in number, though, which gives us a chance! Note that I'm on this bus because I don't like mousing around in windows, when there is a far more capable word processor available in VDE, a DOS test "editor" that edits multiple files at once, THAT is my killer application; why I'm setting up a DOS-something to handle it. As a user, I am a long-time DOS user, so I've got some room to play...

    Recently got a hold of a dell wyse with a j5005 that is going to replace my file server, which is currently a HP T620. Now I'm wondering if the T620 (quad core low power amd chip) could be setup as a retro device

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 4 měsíci

      Yes, but it depends what you are trying to emulate and what type of GPU is in it. I have a few of these "think clients" myself including a quad core Dell Wyse 5060 with an AMD GPU that is okay for a bit of retro.
      I don't have a T620 but have a look at "Phil's Computer Lab" as he has done a huge amount of retro stuff over the years and I am sure he's done videos on the T620 running MS-DOS and/or early Windows.

    Been struggling for two days to get Windows 95 installed on Dosbian, after i downloaded it the second i saw it released. Its been a process, but slowly, steadily, i feel like i'm getting there.
    Win 3.1 runs on it perfectly fine, i'll try Chicago at some point- But moving a Windows 95 installer to a harddrive image rendered the image unreadable, so i'm back to square one on that one.

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 4 měsíci +1

      I believe people have run Windows 3.11 and Windows 95 within one of the versions of DOSBox, possibly dosbox-staging. But DOSBox is an "MS-DOS like environment emulator" not a full PC emulator (like Virtualbox) - so it's there to run programs that would run on top of MS-DOS, like those early versions of Windows.
      Windows 2000 and beyond did not run on MS-DOS.

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 4 měsíci +1

      For your first question, yes - although emulation of any type requires a lot of RAM and CPU power. I suspect it would run fine on a Pi Zero 2W but might struggle on an older Pi Zero.
      For your second question, probably yes - provided it's the earlier versions of Microsoft BASIC that were built into MS-DOS versions. The final MS-DOS version was 7.x under Windows 9x but I don't know if Microsoft kept BASIC in MS-DOS that late due to them moving more to Visual Basic later on. You'd need to check on that.

    With an NVME on a Pi can it be multi partitioned and different images flashed to the partitions and then booted from a boot menu?
    Which boot loader SW is a good one?

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 4 měsíci

      I believe you need to look at an application called PINN to do Raspberry Pi multi-boot - booting from NVME or MicroSD should be no great difference in setting it up, and I believe Lee has done a video or two on this.
      I can't help you any further because PINN isn't something I need to consider using - but it might well solve your issue here.

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 4 měsíci

      You don't "need" and NVME drive, it's just that in the longer term it is likely to be more reliable than MicroSD.
      Whenever you run an operating system, the drive it's on is always being read from and written to, which is my hard drives, SSDs and NVME drives were invented.
      The SD system came out of camera storage and was originally designed more for "static" storage of photographs, audio files, etc. However, SD got more reliable over the years and can be used to boot an OS from, but compared to the other types of drive it is likely to have a shorter lifespan.
      SD also tends to be quite a bit slower than SSDs and NVME drives.

    • @zenmaster24
      @zenmaster24 Před 4 měsíci

      @@terrydaktyllus1320 i think the lifespan of an sdcard will probably be enough for an emulation box.
      "faster" transfer speeds is a bit moot when coming to such old games - will they load noticeably faster off a sold state storage device that is not microsd?

    • @terrydaktyllus1320
      @terrydaktyllus1320 Před 4 měsíci

      @@zenmaster24I understand your point but I was simply looking at the differences between the types of media.
      If you run a Linux OS on an SD, there is a lot of read and writing going on constantly, especially if you have any logging active.
