  • Soundtrack for "Knight Of Cups" (2015), directed by Terrence Malick and composed by Hanan Townshend. Most of the music are loose pieces by other composers, especially Arvo Pärt, precursor of sacred minimalism.
This is Terrence Malick's seventh film, which deals with the life of Rick, a screenwriter in Hollywood who is lost in a chaotic city of excess and meaninglessness.
The whole film revolves around the idea of pilgrimage. Rick is the metaphor of the pilgrim: He who is lost and has to find, not himself, but the meaning of his life. In the film, we are shown this at the beginning with the Hymn of the Pearl. Rick is the prince sent by his father to search for a pearl found in the depths of the sea. In the search, the people of Egypt give him a drink from a cup, causing him to fall into a deep sleep that makes him forget who he is, forget the pearl, and forget his father. But (and this is the key to the film) his father does not forget him and sends him messengers, guides, to wake him up.
This structure of going in search of something, falling into a "dream", waking up, and finally getting what he was looking for is the same as some of the most famous stories in the world: Plato's The Myth of Phaedrus; Israel's Exodus; the Parable of the Prodigal Son...etc.
The first song is Fantasia on a Theme by Tomas Tallis, which opens the opera "The Pilgrim's Progress" based on John Bunyan's book of the same title. The music itself is a reference to the pilgrimage.
Another example would be the song Exodus, by Wojciech Kilar which deals with the 40 years that God's chosen people spent in the desert until they reached the promised land. This story is the paradigm of the pilgrimage and in the movie, Malick represents it with this song, every time Rick is lost.

Totally agree. Malick is able to pick the classical songs that best fit the story he is trying to tell. Masterpieces!!!
