    I agree with everything you said on this video. However, inside the MKUE box I managed to fit 7 deck boxes color coded for each hero, 7 drawstring pouches color coded for each enemy tokens, 3 fan expansions (54 item cards, 100 quest cards, 18 grievous wound cards), 4 playmats for multiplayer, 2 playmats for solo, a couple of plano boxes, and... wait for it... a DICE TOWER! XD

    I ordered the ultimate edition from my local game cafe last week. I really love the crunch! You inspired me with your last solo video on Mage Knight. Many thanks for your efforts Liz.

    I recently got the game for the first time and bought the ultimate edition and I love having everything in single box. I did however really not like the insert spaces for skills and level tokens (so hard to get them out!) so now I have all character cards/tokens/shields in ziplock bags. Having sleeved all the cards this works fine- and the remaining sleeved non-character cards still fit in the insert card spaces

    Obviously, Star Trek: Frontiers edition 😀 Seriously, the Star Trek theme speaks to me more than base Mage Knight

    If you have no problem with box size and that filmsy cheapy plastice insert. You can keep UE then add 4*4" pizza box as storage for each heros(mage knight). The depth is perfectly match and you can close the box completely.
    This really helps a lot for setup. You can just grap a hero box you want and it'ready to play. It also solve the issue with sleeved cards cannot fit in the insert because all hero cards will be stored in each separate box. With extra room in the insert, you can freely arrange cards as you like :)
    If you new to the game I think UE is the one you go for. Unless you can find second hand first edition at reasonable prize.

    Well Amazon was just recently selling the base came for $79.99, and put the Ultimate Edition up for like $87.50. I got the UE.

    Wow, now this is awesome. I just bought the ultimate edition last week, and you're right; the box is gigantic and is larger then any of my shelves. It's one of those "top shelf" games like Gloomhaven. Box size is the only negative I could find though as this is quickly becoming one of my favorite games. I love how you organized the game to fit in the regular edition box. Small world but I have a few of the exact same tackle box organizers as you do. I think I'll put one to good use! Need to get some sleeves though. I have some cheap ones but maybe I could pick up some dragon shield. Anyway, still loving your videos on Mage Knight!

    I have the original box with the Daedalus wood insert with Lost Legion and Krang expansions in the base box. I don’t have shades of Tesla only for the simple fact that there is so much content in what I have that I don’t have the desire for more at the moment.

    As to the size difference, if you contacted the publisher, they would have sent you the corrected version, which fit perfectly. I don't know if they still do it.

    I wished I didn't have to sell my original. The only expansion I had was Lost Legion. But now that I have Ultimate, I can say that it really is far better quality. I'd say unless you have the original and all three expansions already, Ultimate is the way to go no hesitation. Even if you have it all already, if you have money to toss around, it really is much higher quality and well organized.

    • @BlackwingDK
      @BlackwingDK Před 3 lety

      In what way were the quality better? I get its more consistent, but interested to find out if colours for example are more vibrant in UE? I always thought the colours on the base Mage Knight boards were sort of bland, which is a shame giving the adventure theme.

    • @leadbones
      @leadbones Před 3 lety

      @@BlackwingDK The miniatures are painted better, the cards are all consistently colored and sized (the original prints had subtle differences of one sort or another in a lot of the decks), the quality of the dice inset printing is better, the insert is actually highly efficient and sturdy... I mean it isn't in front of me right now, but a lot of minor things were just ever so slightly improved. Improved enough that I think the original version is basically superseded in this case.

    I'm really wanting to get this, even though I have Star Trek: Frontiers, but the price is a huge turn off right now though. I think the cheapest I've seen it is at around $175AU, and I paid less than that for Gloomhaven. I think the price is due to the number of flights around the world being significantly reduced, so it's harder to import things now. I can't quite recall, but I think the price was around $50 less prior to the pandemic. So I might just hold out for a bit longer.

    • @Sui2807
      @Sui2807 Před 4 lety +3

    Where can you even find the ultimate edition? It's not sold anywhere I can find. And I feel like it's more fair to have all the card backings be the same design. So the ultimate edition feels like less cheating somewhat.

    • @BeyondSolitaire
      @BeyondSolitaire  Před 3 lety +1

      I think that it might be between printings. I don't mind the card backs-I'm usually so focused on the game itself I don't notice stuff like that, and I sleeve everything. :D

    Nice comparision :) did you notice any cards colours differences between base game and ultimate edition? I noticed that base game has more saturated and expressive colours than UE. Also the cards quality is better for me in base game (they are harder and less flexible). Maybe its just my specimen, but want to ask about your observations. Greetings from Poland :)

    • @BeyondSolitaire
      @BeyondSolitaire  Před 4 lety +1

      I think the cards might have been a bit thicker in my original printing, but UE takes the prize for consistency.

    • @BeyondSolitaire
      @BeyondSolitaire  Před 3 lety +1

      Dragon Shields are just fancy, expensive sleeves. I sleeved MK because I love it and also have the old edition with expansions printed separately.

  • @berukno1601
    @berukno1601 Před 4 lety +1

    I have both but prefer the smaller box due to portability, I do take it on trips. I did opposite of you though and bought card and tackle boxes for the ultimate edition and I threw away that insert, but the original small box stays the same.
    With all that being said, I tend to use all the components from the ultimate edition as replacements, randomizers/themes with pen/paper games, or for designing personal card games, a little challenge I attempt with every game I own because I love the portability of regular cards. I designed an exact copy of Onirim with two decks of regular playing cards for instance, since card quality of the actual game is awful, but you do miss out on the pretty artwork.

    Don't get the hype really,
    It is so absurd to have in a game everything cards, tokens, tiles, tokens, dice just a huge headache to me
    Thanks for the explanation Liz but this is really not for me...
    Putting everything together is just a mess not a game

    • @trashmyego
      @trashmyego Před 4 lety +2

      The game is not for you then?
      Don't see how that'd dispel the hype that is pretty well cemented in the boardgame community, and particularly the solo community. Putting everything together makes one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. It takes effort to learn, but pays off through a replayable engine that makes hours upon hours disappear for me.
      The hype is real, you're just unwilling to engage with it. And that's fine, but it also doesn't mean the game is inherently a mess.
