      possibly a silly question: when I hear a guy and a girl singing in harmony it is always much more easier for me to "ear" the girl rather than the notes the guy is singing, that for me remains a nice mysterious background I'm totally unable to reproduce. Is it somehow..."normal" or my brain is really deranged? ;)

    • @oandoduo
      @oandoduo  Před 6 lety +62

      E. Piovani, that is very normal! The girl's part is usually higher and so it stands out more and it is easier for our ear to hear the top notes. It takes practice to be able to pick out the lower 'guy's part. Try breaking it down to each note: sing the girls part and then drop the pitch until you settle onto the guy's note. In our tutorial for Fleetwood Mac's 'I Don't Want To Know', we demonstrate two parts separately first and then put them together, try practicing along with the video! czcams.com/video/DmmrRLH0m5A/video.html

    • @mattcloud0414
      @mattcloud0414 Před 6 lety +9

      E. Piovani just keep practicing the part you want to take, and, if possible, do it with a slow tempo at first. I also think practicing with a partner who can sing can help a lot too.

    Something that has helped me immensely in trying to sing harmonies is to follow some advice I read or heard that suggested thinking of a harmony part as an alternative melody.
    In other words, instead of thinking of building harmonies by trying to shadow or think of a harmony for each individual note of the melody, think more broadly, about an alternative 'tune' to the main melody.

    Thanks, great video. A friend and I have been getting together for singing sessions. We’ve just started to be adventurous enough to try some harmonies on some David Bowie songs. I will be following your channel for some tips. Thanks 😊

    Nice video guys! I want to sing my own harmonies (as I always sing alone) and I knew it was a 3rd or 5th, but this is really helpful, cheers.

    Lovely sound, but of course when you say a third here you always mean a major third??

    • @oandoduo
      @oandoduo  Před 6 lety +14

      Hey Alan, thanks for watching! When you sing a third above a changing melody, you actually often switch between major and minor thirds (and sometimes fourths) to better suit the accompanying chords. In our example, 'Bye Bye Love' by The Everly Brothers, it starts as a Major Third (E above C) and then changes to a Minor Third (D above B).
