  • The Nissan Skyline R34 GT-R V Spec is a car of legendary status. From pop culture such as the Fast and the Furious and Need for Speed Underground it was hard to ignore this car. Even with the car being absent in the US car culture it has become a dream car for many around the world. With an RbB26 powertrain, single precision turbo, and 560HP to the wheels...this car rips. So I finally had the chance to drive one of the rarest cars in the United States, and I'm here to tell you if it's worth the hefty price tag. Let's go for a drive of a lifetime.

I think the main reason i glorify this car is for how damn good the body lines connect for its time. To think im older than this car and it still holds that aggressive modern look that wasnt just weird triangular points like most today

Nah if I was Nissan I'd use the resources to make a halo car for Infiniti. Get people excited about the brand again and then build on it. The Z should remain the Nissan halo car, in north America at least, at let that like be an affordable dream car with a splash of nostalgia. Corvette? I'm sure a lot of ultra nerds are gunna bitch about it not being called a Nissan but that's the name of the game in the U.S. Gotta get the not so car people to buy one of these to. they are the majority. True legends, and I’d say following only a short distance behind them would be the RX-7. Those three cars all have such tremendously huge followings and are all legends in there own right. If you're talking about factory reliability, tuning potency and money for horses then yes I agree. The 2JZ is better.
But In terms of engine response, revvs, racer/enthusiast immersion and sound. I think the RB is better than the 2JZ in these cases especially if money wasn't a factor into your build.

The most fun part about driving one is watching the foreigners freak out around you but for the most part the driving experience is not ground breaking or what it is built up to be by society. Of course not because every time you see one it’s modded out and racing. It lives up to the hype in terms of its potential and it’s Legacy. Plus it’s from an era where not a lot of cars have a lot of power out the box heck even the mustang even had about 280hp during that time. Back then everybody was on that “what can I beat with a four or a six cylinder?” tip. Now we have cars that make so much power it’s not even worth trying.

From my own personal experience I see a lot more BNR34s that are nearly bone stock or just a few bolt ons vs heavily modified ones actually racing. I find the most of the extreme builds are one on ER34s.The Supra as well is another example, I’ve had mine for 6 years and not a single day has gone by where I thought to myself this is the pinnacle of automotive engineering and this deity car the internet claims it to be. Well as an owner of BOTH 98 Supra and 99 GTR ... I don't think it matters IMO, both are great and both are different in their own way. Both still have stock twins with just the bolt-ons.
I DO get more attention from the Supra over the GTR shockingly. More people know the MKIV Supra than the Skyline. I can pull up to a gas station and not have 1 single person come up to me in the GTR or in my 98 240sx, its like most people don't recognize them, while the Supra, i always get 1 person to walk to me to look at the Supra or give me the thumbs UP as they drive by. Even while driving the Supra down the road i get more attention.
The GTR and the 240sx, its like i have to get that die hard Nissan guy to see and recognize it before they give me the thumbs up and when they do recognize it and see it, then they ask WHY i stayed with the KA24DE motor instead of SR20 or RB26 or even 2JZ ... I tell them because i already own a 98 Supra and a 99 R34 ... and besides the KA24 is a torque monster, when i step on it, it drops and GOES ...

I have a white R33 GTR and an anthracite NA 5 speed Supra. I got the GTR in April 2020, and there weren't many R33s around, and it felt like the car would elicit a huge reaction from at least one person everytime I drove it. When I got the supra, the reactions seemed a little more subdued. But after putting a Tomei on it, it gets a ton more attention.
I agree that both are great in their own ways. I've yet to put the suspension of either to the test, but even when I was on stock suspension on the 33 with a decent functioning HICAS, it FELT like it could handle any curve at absurd speed. The Supra is noticeably smaller and feels easier to cruise in.

First of all, words cannot describe how much I envy you right now in this moment. Secondly, I think the R34 is the car of our generation more so than the Supra. The R34’s rarity, and the fact that it wasn’t exported to North America really gave it that extra wow factor when it was made famous by Gran Turismo, Fast and Furious, and Need For Speed.

As an ex-owner of the car in question, the truth is, the standard GTR is heavy and slow. Plenty of cars that are standard and less exotic can out handle and outrun one of these. So the standard guise is not something that lifts it to a legendary status. Originally meant for rally - from the R32 believe it or not- what they are capable of when you throw money at it, is what probably makes it a legend.

There are plenty of reasons why the GT-R is so desired. A generation of kids grew up driving the GT-R in Gran Turismo. Many of my peers read features in automotive magazines, but honestly 2 Fast 2 Furious locked it down for me. The allure is also heighten due to the 25 year import band from the NHTSA’s (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Skyline is truly a breed of its own with respect that surpasses the Nissan brand itself. No other Nissan vehicle has been put on a pedestal so grand as the GT-R.

The GTR wasn't experienced in the US until the 25yr rule or if you did a grey import really. You can argue the supra because it is(rapidly approaching was)in a similar category to say owning a shelby or z06. Now you can argue them from an era sense but then cars like the f1 enter the chat, lol. I gotta go with the terminator cobra for that era.
